Aster
euinmfa19ba41.jpg

Character Source: Original
Profession: Game Store Clerk | Aspiring Monster Hunter
Species: Wolf-girl
Affinities: Lucky

Character Behavior
Aster is a sassy scrapper.

She’s flippant and sarcastic, snarking and joking at inopportune times just to try and get a rise out of people. She rarely takes things seriously, and her response to everything from getting agitated to scared to amused is to just double down on trying to get under people’s skin, keeping the focus off of her. She loves to get a rise out of people and crack jokes at others’ expense, but is quick to back down if someone starts to get genuinely upset.

She tries to avoid any direct confrontation or physical altercations, but when push comes to shove she isn’t exactly a coward. She fights dirty, goading and distracting to try and get her enemy riled up and distracted, flinging dirt or mud or even glass in someone’s face and eyes. She isn’t afraid to make use of her claws and teeth to really do some damage, grab up anything nearby that might grant her some advantage, or even to go for low blows to help turn things in her favor.

Physical Description
Aster is relatively tall, standing in at just a shade over six feet in height, though is quite slim despite that. A mixture of dark and pale gray fur covers her body, and she sports very wolf-like traits otherwise, including claws, teeth, ears, tail and muzzle. She dresses like a stereotypical punk just “‘cause it looks cool”, and in spite of how much she says or indicates to the contrary takes very careful care of her appearance.

Character History
A native of Erde Nona, Aster was born the only son and middle child of a relatively mundane family. There was nothing special about it, and nothing particularly negative to be said about it. His mother and father both worked hard, and provided for Aster and his elder sister and (eventual) younger sister.

Aster was always restless as a youth, and frequently got into trouble, much to the chagrin and disappointment of his parents. His sisters found it amusing and endearing, though, and encouraged his antics.

At some point, things changed, and his mother lost her job, while his father got an unexpected promotion. Things were still stable at home, though now his mother was there more often. And for a time, Aster calmed down, with more frequent and direct attention from his mother. Before it had been his father doing much of the talking-to and monitoring and disciplining, and Aster had resented it deeply. He took to his mother far more fondly, and after only a short while began to look up to her earnestly.

His father’s new job kept him away from home much more often, leaving Aster surrounded by his sisters and mother. He started to feel…uncomfortably different and isolated from them, which he at first attributed to being the only male in the house so often, especially when his mother or sisters had former colleagues or friends over. But it steadily got worse, to the point where he started to get genuinely uncomfortable over things.

It took him a long, unpleasant while to come to a realization about just what it was that was bothering him, and even longer to actually properly accept it.

It took him even longer to tell anyone else.

Aster had been born the only son of his parents, but therein was the problem, as he eventually realized. Aster didn’t want to be the only son. Aster wanted to be the middle daughter.

Aster’s parents…took it surprisingly well, thankfully. More confused than anything, about why she had waited so long to say anything, to which Aster sheepishly admitted it had taken a long time to come to terms and get comfortable enough in her own head and skin to say anything to anyone, and all the nightmare fantasies a wandering mind could come up with about if they had taken it poorly didn’t help. Some friends had been in a similar boat and been driven to horrible places by it, and that had only further weighed on Aster’s mind.

Aster’s mood was much improved, after that. She slowly reverted back to being just as much of a troublemaker as she had been when younger, though less out of any kind of malicious intent and just out of amusement, and life went on.

General Character Notes/Writing Tips
  • As mentioned above in the history section, Aster was born biologically male; though by now, in every way except the actual surgical aspect, Aster is otherwise female and female-presenting. Of course, this detail isn't likely to come up except in particularly intimate moments, with people Aster trusts dearly.
  • Aster's tendency toward being flippant and sarcastic is used to try and mask a somewhat...overbearing inferiority complex. It's almost a reflexive action to internally and mentally compare herself to anyone and everyone else, and any little thing (however minute or trivial) they're better at than she is.
  • Aster chronically has trouble getting a thorough night's rest, often appearing sleep-deprived and tired. She relies perhaps too much on caffeine and assorted energy supplements to make it through most days.
  • For all her playful banter, flippant demeanor and general unflappable facade, Aster is actually incredibly easily embarrassed or flustered. She can't take any degree of flirting, and tends to wear her emotions on her sleeve when she gets even the least bit put on the spot by such things.
  • Originating from her time during Dante's Abyss 2022, Aster has developed a particularly nasty case of post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from her death at the hands of Jason Voorhees. It manifests in soul-jarringly realistic nightmares, reliving the event, and is easily set off by anything too similar to the environs of Camp Crystal Lake. Mist or fog especially torment her, and she has re-developed an irrational child-like fear of the dark, and anyone wearing any kind of mask automatically puts her frantically on guard and ill at ease.
  • Aster is an incredible lightweight. She cannot hold her alcohol -- at all.
  • Though she normally tries to hide it, she actually has a very prominent southern twang and vernacular that tends to come out when she gets particularly emotional or otherwise worked up.
  • She is actually incredibly vain in regards to hear appearance. Though she tends to brush off compliments on her looks and take them in stride as if they don't matter and it's all just natural for her, she is incredibly hurt by even the slightest insinuation or insult implying she looks bad in any way, as it does, in fact, take her a lot of work to keep up appearances.
  • Tends to swear on and invoke the name of Terry or Terrance (as in the Arbiter of Erde Nona) rather than arbiters in general, in much the same way people do with God or Jesus in the real world.
  • Aster tends to be rather impulsive and very easily goaded, and often makes...very poor choices and decisions as a result. She also has a worrying habit of jumping to conclusions and assuming things, such as that people are daring her or making fun of her to do things.

Items/Equipment

Trident (600)
Damage 3 (300)
Protection 3 (300)

A parting gift of sorts from Aster's rather unpleasant sojourn in DA '22. It is a trident...made for stabbing and, ostensibly, eating large pieces of meat. It's also really good for stabbing other things, and it's sturdy -- like, really sturdy -- and can be used to block and deflect all kinds of crazy attacks.

Plus it's just really cool, man.

Handgun (150)
Damage 3 (300)
-- Ranged (+150)
-- Removable (-150)
-- Finite (-150)

Nothing overly remarkable about it. It's a fairly modern, semi-automatic handgun which Aster acquired for self-defense purposes. It's got great stopping power for its size, but it's nothing to really write home about otherwise. It's got a 15-round magazine, though Aster's far from a master hand at reloading, needing several precious seconds to manage it. And it is, after all, just a gun which she could be disarmed of or lose otherwise in some fashion.

Smartphone (100)
Communication 1 (100)

Aster's smartphone. It's nothing special, and not exactly top of the line anymore, but it still works just fine and can keep up with most of even the latest apps and shenanigans. It does everything a smartphone does, as you might expect.

Hunter's Garb (1,200)
Protection 5 (500)
-- Ongoing(+500)
Adaptation (Incredible Heat Environments) (100)
Adaptation (Chemical or Toxic Environments) (50)
Adaptation (Disease) (50)

Though it might look more decorative than functional with all its frills, lace and buttons, this particular outfit is woven with many layers of padding and armor of reliable medieval and contemporary design and materials. While not always worn unless expecting trouble or foul weather, it also includes matching gloves, a mid-shin length overcoat, and a wide-brimmed hat not unlike that of a witch or famous vampire hunter.

The outfit is not only virtually waterproof and repellant of most liquids or environmental hazards carrying toxic payloads or disease, but its many layers and virtually full-body coverage afford superb overall protection from general harm and injury while remaining relatively light and flowing to allow for keeping relatively comfortable even in otherwise extreme or dangerous levels of heat.

Holy Moonlight Sword (900)
Damage 6 (600)
--Ranged (+300)
--Removable (-300)
Protection 6 (600)
--Removable (-300)

"Aah, you were at my side, all along. My true mentor... My guiding moonlight..."

A massive two-handed sword, nearly as long from pommel to point as Aster is tall. An arcane weapon, discovered long ago by the hero of Haven Abbey, and in a startling twist of fate, Aster's ancestor. Despite its size and seeming unwieldiness, the weapon feels as natural to Aster as her own two hands, and she can wield it with surprising ease. The blade of the weapon seems to glow faintly blue in the moonlight, and serves equally well at traditional offense as it does for defense and warding off attacks.

With a force of will, the glow of moonlight can be empowered to dance along the sword in a visible aura of pale greenish-blue, the abyssal cosmos and countless stars and nebula beyond measure dancing in the haze of moonlight flowing from the blade. While thus empowered, the sword can release a wave of shadowy moonlight, striking with tremendous force along a path of the sword's own slashing arc at great range.

Though a powerful weapon, and one that will always return to her eventually, it can still be struck from her grasp and leave her disarmed.

Natural Traits

Predator's Senses (500)
Sense (Sight, Hearing, Smell & Extrasensory) 1 (400)
– Ongoing (100)

Perhaps predictably, given her wolf heritage, Aster's senses are extremely sharp across the board. Her overall eyesight, hearing and sense of smell are nearly as acute as an actual wolf's, including much sharper vision at night or in otherwise low light. She can detect and hear much lower and higher noise frequencies than normal, and is much more sensitive to changes in things like barometric and electrostatic pressure in the air, giving her a keen sense for not only when the weather's about to go crazy, but her relative elevation.

Goes Fast (700)
Speed 1 (200)
– Ongoing (100)
Agility 1 (200)
Flight 1 (200)

Aster is fast. That's all there really is to it. She can maintain a running pace most normal folks would be lucky to hit at a sprint. She's got some impressive reflexes to match it, and once she gets going she can make some impressive leaps and bounds, to match.

Tough Ol' Girl (200)
Endurance 1 (100)
Move Object 1 (100)

In spite of her looks and attitude, Aster's a tough little thing. She can endure heavy physical activity for a surprising length of time without getting too tired out, and she can handle and move weight far in excess of what one might expect. She is often the one that gets drafted to help her friends move, yes.

Thick Fur (300)
Adaptation: Incredible Cold Environments (100)
Protection 1 (100)
– Ongoing (100)

Aster’s fur is quite thick and fluffy. It affords superb protection from cold and wind, and it’s thick enough to afford some minor protection from physical harm.

Claws and Teeth (200)
Damage 2 (200)

And her bare hands, in a pinch. Aster is a lot stronger than she looks, and can pack a mean wallop if she’s of a mind to it. Her muzzle provides some good chomping if she has to, and her claws are as good as daggers if she’s pressured into using them.

Abilities/Techniques

Visceral Attack (900)
Damage 6 (600)
-- Limited (Only on staggered/stunned targets) (-300)
Healing 3 (600)

A particularly vicious and brutal attack. A lunging thrust with an open hand, Aster digging her claws into the target's chest, before winding up and wrenching her claws out to the side in a shower of gore that is as grisly as it is bizarrely invigorating, even serving to slowly mend and patch up any injuries Aster might have suffered in recent memory. The sheer directness of the attack makes it almost as obvious and easy to see coming as a train, however, and as such it can only be properly used against someone who has been completely floored or knocked so off-balance they're virtually helpless.

Raptor of the Mists (200)
Teleport 1 (300)
-- Limited (Only straight up/only while ready) (-50)
-- Concentration (-50)

Aster crouches down slightly, adopting a stance reminiscent of something between a sprinter's crouch and a hunting beast about to pounce. While thus prepared, at any time she can seemingly all but disappear in a flash of mist and flurry of onyx black raptor feathers, reappearing in a similar flurry of feathers a split-second later some ten feet straight up of where she was, poised and ready to strike.

Bloodhound's Step (900)
Speed 4 (800)
-- Limited (only for a split second, in a straight-line dash) (-200)
Concealment (Sight, Hearing & Extrasensory) 1 (300)

Without warning or preamble, Aster suddenly lunges forward, seeming to all but vanish from existence for a split second, covering distance up to 50 feet before reappearing. While a far cry true teleportation, the sheer speed and momentary invisibility it offers can still fool the casual observer, and the potential to utilize it multiple times in rapid succession to literally run circles around someone is a potent (if highly exhausting) trick in Aster's pocket in a pinch.

Master Skills

Technical Skills (600)
Master Skills
-- Technical (Computer/Electronics Troubleshooting) 4 (200)
-- Investigation (Eye for Detail) 4 (200)
-- Knowledge (Speed-Reading) 3 (150)
-- Research (Internet Wizard) 2 (100)
---- Activation (-50)

• Troubleshooting -- It wasn't anything as professional as actual college, but Aster has in fact taken classes on the subject and knows her way around figuring out why something isn't working right, from the basics of "have you tried turning it off and on again?" to somewhat more advanced diagnostics to root out a potential software issue.
• Eye for Detail -- Maybe not the kind of thing you'd normally think of, but Aster has had to develop a talent for spotting certain things, mostly for her lamentable retail job at a game-centric store. The number of times people try to slip fake money, sell fakes of rare cards or the like, or pass off a fake ID for the 'special' (read: age-restricted) merchandise is a lot more than you'd think. Being able to notice and spot the tiny details and flaws that give such things away quickly and reliably is an important thing. Aster considers it a point of pride to not let such things past her unless they're very good fakes. It comes in handy with things like pattern recognition, spotting inconsistencies, and makes her great at those 'spot the difference' games.
• Speed-Reading -- The amount of inane bullshit Aster has had to read (and read quickly) is sometimes staggering. From cards with paragraphs of rules text, to entire game rulebooks to be able to tell some "UHM, ACKSHUALLY" type he's wrong, to itemized inventory lists when the new miniatures shipment comes in, there's a lot of little things. Reading it all quickly is one thing, but actually comprehending and maintaining what's read is another matter. It's tough, but Aster has had to get good at it, or get overwhelmed by a tidal wave of nerd bullshit and angry manager yelling, which she'd rather avoid at all costs.
• Internet Wizard -- Any old schmuck can do some snooping on the internet and use a search engine. But there's a difference between that and doing it well. Even knowing the basics of search syntax, recognizing ads and obvious biased or clickbait results, can dramatically improve the speed, ease and reliability of finding information. And with at least some of that knowledge at her fingertips, from many long heated discussions and "no I'm right!" arguments, Aster can typically find out at least a little something about a whole lot if things...as long as she has a minute or two to search it up. It comes in handy when all you need is some quick, simply answers!

Social Skills (300)
Master Skills
-- Social (Bullshit De-escalation) 3 (150)
-- Social (Customer Service Voice) 3 (150)

• Bullshit De-escalation -- An unfortunately very well-practiced skill developed by necessity when you work in retail. Being able to stay calm under pressure and avert rampant bullshittery and conflict between customers or between a customer and oneself. It takes a level head and a well-versed dialogue. Sometimes just a simple "Sir, this is a Wendy's." isn't enough, after all.
• Customer Service Voice -- It really is all about 'how' you say things, sometimes. Most of the time, actually. And Aster is real good at putting on the fake, super polite, nice and sweet voice, tone, manner of speech and even accent to put people at ease and help them relax and have a pleasant time. It sucks, and it's exhausting, but hey. It's a living, right?

Practical Skills (400)
Master Skills
-- Survival (Tracking) 4 (200)
-- Medical (First Aid) 2 (100)
-- Driving (Motorcycle) 2 (100)

• Tracking -- It's not an actual 'skill' per se, as much as it is just natural-born wolfish instinct. She's adept at picking out and recognizing scents and sounds in particular, and can notice relatively subtle visual cues of someone or something's passage in an area if she's alert for it.
• First Aid -- Something her parents demanded she learn about. A step above the very basics, she at least knows proper ways to wrap or bandage a wound, how to properly clean cuts and the like to help minimize infection, and what NOT to do in case of most basic injuries.
• Driving -- Given it's her preferred form of motorized conveyance (because it's cool, obviously), Aster at least knows her way around how to handle a cycle of motors. She's no expert, and not going to be doing any races or such absurdity, but she can handle it even on less than perfect roads or in less than ideal weather.

Combat Skills (300)
Master Skills
-- Combat (Unarmed) 2 (100)
-- Combat (Spearmanship) 2 (100)
-- Combat (Marksmanship) 2 (100)

• Unarmed Combat -- She's far from what you'd call a truly capable fighter, but she does know the basics. Company-mandated self-defense classes and all that. She at least knows the right and wrong way to throw a punch, the best/worst places to try and hit someone, and other such similar basic principles. Plus some natural-born instinct helps her put her claws and teeth to use in a pinch, which definitely helps.
• Spearmanship -- Learned purely through trial by fire more than actual practice. While her only experience is with a trident rather than an actual spear, the same principles apply. Probably. She at least knows more than 'sharp end that way', even if she does do some rather...unorthodox and occasionally risque maneuvers with it, on occasion.
• Marksmanship -- Aster might not be great at some of the 'handling a gun' aspects, but...she did spend some time at the range with her dad once upon a time, and has had a bit of practice on her own, and is at least...competent when it comes to the shooting part of things. She does at least grasp the concept of things like trigger discipline, when or when not to have the safety on, and how to maintain a proper grip on her gun.

Aster's personal motorcycle. Though it's technically not anything THAT special, it's special to Aster, in that it's been tricked out and customized to her specific design sensibilities. She's had family and friends help her get it fine-tuned juuuust the way she wants it, and added in some special extra features. Part of that included enough cleverly-concealed storage compartments and hidden spaces to store all her various and sundry shit to not risk it falling out of her pockets, and features a custom-crafted engine (that cost her way more than she's comfortable discussing to have built) that boasts a self-replicating power source, so she never has to worry about gas or getting stranded. And it's even got enough space for an extra passenger to ride with her, if they don't mind bunching up rather close!

While it's not quite the fastest thing out thereby any means, it's still much faster than she is on foot. And what it might lack in actual top speed, it more than makes up for in acceleration -- it can go from 0 to 60 in right around 3 seconds! And, when she's really putting the pedal to the metal, it can even seem to defy gravity and physics, riding on and along even completely vertical walls or over the surface of liquids -- provided she can maintain a high enough speed, of course!

While naturally any vehicle going fast enough can make some pretty nice jumps if they have a ramp or some ramp-like structure to drive off of, what do you do when you need to get some altitude without something so convenient? You add some experimental jet and piston-driven launching jump systems to your motorcycle, that's what. While they do have a limited range of launch, they can put out surprising force, enabling considerable height and distance.

Further modifications she's done to it have seen armored plating added to it, sparing as little expense as possible to ensure it remains sleek and lightweight while being as indestructible as she could manage. The design and construction of it even make it afford considerable protection to her when she rides it, and add more than enough heft and sturdiness to turn the entire bike into a virtual battering ram at high speeds, able to crash into and plow through people and objects with considerable force.

A relatively minor, but incredibly handy addition Aster had put in was the addition of a camera and sensor array. Incorporating backup cameras and sensors similar to regular cars, along with additional sensors on either side, all linked to small screens worked into the gauge cluster, giving her a quick at-a-glance idea of what's behind and around her without having to awkwardly crane and look around to risk falling or hampering her control.

Perhaps the most advanced feature Aster has added. A remote start and activation system, along with an automatic driving feature. It's relatively simplistic, suited mostly to remotely start her bike and get it driving itself to her location in the event she can't (or doesn't feel like) getting to it herself, or for whatever other reason. It even comes bundled with a remote control feature, enabling her to assume direct control and remotely pilot it more directly. It's definitely a handy feature.
