For a while, she’d been completely alone, and that had been just fine with her.

Under the circumstances, she knew, most might fall into a pit of depression. Backed against a wall with little left to do, a lesser person might slide to the floor, bury their face in their hands and sob. They might lament the plans that could’ve been, the operations that might’ve gone right, the battles that may have been won. But Azula didn’t have time to be so pathetic.

She had things to burn.

She remembered with some sense of sentiment — a mostly unfamiliar feeling — the faces of her soldiers as Elise had made her play. Some, like the vampire, has seemed all too willing to capitulate to Gilgamesh. Most of her officers included — disappointing after the rousing battle cry they’d shouted days before at Fortress Briggs. It struck her deeply that, when it counted, they’d been willing to languish in a cell for the rest of their godforsaken lives on this island; that, or follow a pretender into a just as unlikely battle.

Perhaps they’d whisper that she’d been a coward, too. Perhaps they’d look at what she’d done — turned and disappeared into the forest — and say she’d run away. But that would be a lie; she’d just run out of the frying pan and into the fire. She wouldn’t be staying quiet for long. She’d racked up debts, and had pounds of flesh to collect.

Seeing Stheno, then, had been comforting.

At the very least, the gorgon hadn’t left her behind. The older woman had always seemed to carry a torch for Azula in ways that few of her other soldiers ever had, and despite the fact that the fire princess liked to pretend she didn’t need anyone else’s approval, having it — and from someone equally impressive — did bring her some measure of comfort. The mercenary believed in her, and for that, Azula was thankful; even psychopaths needed friends, sometimes. And to have one actually prove reliable, well… that, too, was an unfamiliar feeling, and one she — shocking even herself — was all too eager to explore. Even if that exploration was bound to take place deep in the wilderness of the island, with only shadows and beasts to keep them company.

“You don’t have to call me Commander anymore,” Azula scoffed. “You barely ever did.”

Stheno smiled. “Sure,” she nodded, “but it’s more fun that way.”

“No,” Azula shook her head with a smirk, “it’s more fun if we earn it.”

Stheno stood from where she’d sat on the ground, gazing out into the forest around them. The fire princess knew what she was thinking — what was left for them to do, then? To earn it?

They could hardly continue in this game as they had been, with just enough power between them to overtake Dr. Swift in an Agni Kai. Something had to be done, something had to be figured out… plans had to be ruined, and Azula was certain that she was the girl to do it, but… how? The options were lain out in front of them, and only a few stuck out as feasible.

Either way, the path laid before them was coated in fire, and that was exactly the way Azula liked it. She would watch this entire island be lit aflame before she was through here.

“I think we’ve got people who deserve a visit from us,” the teenage terror mused.

Stheno turned back to her. “You’re not thinking what I think you’re thinking.”

“I don’t know,” Azula giggled. “Am I?”

Burn, baby, burn.
