”And so the morning sun has vanquished the horrible night! How wonderful it must be. Alas...it is with great sadness I must announce that not all of you made it to see this sight. Let us pause for the standard seven seconds of mourning for our departed:

Weiss and Kazooie kept an appreciable distance, the two groups keeping a bit of a distance as they went about their basic business. Weiss wasn’t sure, exactly, why these two had spared them - she’d just gotten a basic ‘this seems more fun’ from the Purple pocket monster over there.

Kazooie rolled her eyes, keeping her eyes on them. The two had been relatively silent, with Weiss’s avian guardian keeping close in case any more funny business came up.

The huntress was, for the most part, just learning to adapt. It was… embarrassing, for her, to suddenly have to rely on Kazooie for very basic things. Standing up on her own had taken her a few minutes to learn, and every movement right now just felt completely off. She had a completely new sense of balance to get used to, but she’d more-or-less gotten the hang of it.

The Huntress grimaced. She wasn’t sure if it was really worth the time she spent doing it - she doubted she’d be alive much longer in the tournament - but the thought of spending the last few hours of her life peacefully waiting for death did not sit right for her in the slightest.

Eventually, Kazooie broke the silence.

“So… how’s your… well, everything?”

“...Well…” Weiss added. “Head’s still attached to shoulders. The pain is unbearable. And I keep feeling limbs that aren’t there.” Weiss added with a sigh. “...But I’m alive.”

The Huntress looked over at her beheaders. She was having trouble separating the trauma and anger of getting killed from shifting her opinion on the two - but she understood where these two were. They came here to play, but they didn’t seem like particularly terrible people. At least they were far nicer than the netnavi, in that they didn’t run off like anime villains - or show any particular sadism.

“So, what happened to your face?” The purple one asked, looking up with interest at Weiss

Kazooie’s face immediately lifted with a harsh glare. “Watch it, Shadowball.”

“Whuh? No, No, I mean, actually, what happened to your face?”

“Then what’s with the smug look?”

“That’s just my face! Literally, look at me! How else is it s’posed to look?!”

Kazooie seemed ready for some smug retort, But Weiss stood up suddenly. “A lightning storm. And then an Orbital Bombardment.” She added quickly. “With some help from a robot.”

Gengar’s interest seemed to peak, though it lacked malice.

“My turn. Why are you helping us, now?”

Gengar shrugged. “...I, uhh, guess you could say that it looked more fun this way. Well, more like beating the life out of a girl with no arms just… didn’t seem like any fun at all.”

Weiss’s initial response was anger, thinking back to people like Kuzuru, like Anderson, and for a moment she saw Gengar as just the same, another psychopath who got off on murder, but…

The look on Gengar’s face seemed to suggest something a little more grounded. It was a bit more childish… and a little more human.

“Besides, you refused to scare, and that really just ruins it for me.” The pokemon added, immediately moving the conversation along before Weiss could think any more about it. “I’m here to have fun and do what I wanna do. I didn’t wanna beat you up. Easy as that.”

Weiss gave a slow nod, still a little perturbed. “And how about him.”

The prisoner simply lifted it’s… lack of a head to face her.

“Oh, my buddy here, he’s not much of a talker. He’s a real swell guy, though, honest!”

Kazooie rolled her eyes at this, as the prisoner pointed one finger to himself. Weiss hadn’t forgotten he’d beheaded her, either, but this was literally called ‘the death game’.

“...I’ll be honest.” Weiss was going to admit. “I’ve never joined sides with someone who’s cut my head off before. This is very awkward.”

“I haven’t either.” Gengar replied. “But it beats having another fight that’s no fun. C’mon. We’re great guys! Just wait, and we’ll show ya!”

Weiss thought about it for a moment, before nodding. “Well then, I suppose we’re allies.”

“Allies!” Gengar added, as Weiss turned to the prisoner, who seemed… rather happy to make friends. The Excited spirit held up a fist expectantly towards Weiss, ready to bump.

It took a few seconds for the spirit’s shoulders to sag slightly, as Weiss just gave a slow stare.

“...Didn’t know this island had crickets.” Kazooie muttered.

As a dreary, grey dawn broke over the island, the three reluctant companions left their, socially awkward, shelter behind and ventured out into the island once more. Once again, Gengar led the way, his ephemeral form allowing him to slip in and out of the landscape and act like a scout, while The Prisoner, Weiss, and Kazooie followed behind in a loose group. They moved furtively, the persistent storm clouds, strange lightning, and even stranger visual phenomenon setting their nerves on edge. A death game was one thing, and something each had prepared for in their own way, but none had even considered preparing for what was happening now.

Flame a dull yellow, and large eye scanning the surroundings, The Prisoner's mismatched hands reflexively clenched and unclenched at every small sound. So, it was unsurprising when it nearly leapt out of its skin at the sudden speech to its right.

"So… I kind of get why your friend doesn't want to kill me anymore…" Weiss began, her nervously shifting eyes and halting speech belying a uncomfortableness with striking up a conversation.

"And I doubt I'll get much of an answer from you, but… why aren't you trying to kill me?"

Kazooie squawked irritably at Weiss possible provocation of the thing that had already killed her once, but left it at that, as both women stared intently at the flame-headed undead, waiting for an answer. Unfortunately, they wouldn't be much satisfied with what they got, for after a moment, apparently in thought, the corpse candle merely gave them an exaggerated shrug and looked away.

Again, it nearly fell over in surprise, as its gaze fell upon a very close, and unhappy, Anubis. The jackal-headed mental image stared down at The Prisoner as a parent would a child who had broken an expensive toy.

"Bullshit," he began, showing his fangs menacingly. "I've been bonded with you long enough to know when you're hiding something. You know that only one person is going to survive all this, right? So why save her?"

As The Prisoner began to raise its hands in protest, eye wide with innocence, Anubis spat at the ground, his glare strengthening.

"You're not so clumsy, friend, that you'd 'accidentally' heal the woman just because a bird charged at you. I'm sure you'd like everyone to believe that, but I'm in your mind! So, why?! Pity? You'd insult her warrior honor so?! Or is it compassion? The girl has no arms left! You've done nothing but prolong her suffering!"

Nearby, Gengar had dropped back to watch, with Weiss and Kazooie, as their companion flailed madly in gesticulation, its head shifting between various colors, even as its eye remained fixated on the nothing before it. Weiss leaned a bit closer to the ghost, whispering.

"Is… is he always like this?"

With a sharp chortle, Gengar replied, "Yeah, she is."

"Wait… she? That things a girl?!"

"Honestly? I never asked and was too embarrassed to look!"

Gengar laughed, then continued, "I think he's got one of those living weapons, like your Pidgey there, but we just can't see it. But she could just be crazy."

As the ghost Pokémon moves ahead again, Weiss decided to put a bit more distance between herself and The Prisoner.

As Anubis continued to berate his undead host, The Prisoner was so fixated on the Stand, that it was barely cognizant of the world around it. That is, until what seemed to be the motion of Weiss tripping caught the periphery of its vision. Instinctively, and without looking, it reached out with an green, insectoid arm to keep the armless girl from face-planting on the ground. And that's when Anubis froze in place, mouth hanging open on mid-sentence. The world itself seemed to freeze, and the corpse-candle slowly shifted its gaze towards its female companion. As it did, it saw that Gengar was grinning even more widely than usual, and when it finally saw where its hand had landed…

For the first time, The Prisoner's flame turned a brilliant pink and it leapt back away from the girl, hands raised in defense and head shaking side to side as it, wordlessly, tried to defend itself.

Nearby, the ghost Pokémon nearly doubled over in laughter, holding his sides as tears welled in the corners of his eyes.

"Jeez, dude! Second base on the first date? At least take her to dinner first!"

Cheeks red, in embarrassment or anger, not even Weiss knew, the Hollow glared up at the rapidly widening eye of the undead who had dared to touch her so familiarly. Her mouth opened, but not to speak. Instead, a small ball of energy formed on the tip of her tongue.

"CERO!"
