It did not take her long to find her way into the Cevanti Military’s inner buildings. What had began as a casual walk ended up being a frantic jog by the end of it. The fact a few members had noticed she wasn’t necessarily supposed to be there seemed to be relatively meaningless - there were a few ‘not supposed to be here!’ and ‘don’t run in the halls, young lady!’ thrown at her, but she ignored them all and got off scot-free.

Perhaps they were expecting her. Perhaps some of them knew her from her mom.

Perhaps, she thought bitterly, a few of them had forgotten about her until ‘Dreemurr’ had flashed across her screen, and Toriel’s funeral had flashed in her head so they could connect the dots.

The tartness of the thought vanished in an instant, like seashells carried away by the tide.

Not a bit of it mattered as she rounded the corner. She’d already been told where he was, and she wasn’t about to waste her chance, now that she had it back.

She slammed open the door of the Military office with a loud ‘boom’, as the doorknob smacked into the wall. Really, it was just the Cevanti Military’s own faults for such an obvious vulnerability in their property damage potential. A large, boring office opened up to her as she scanned the room, seeing some irrelevant people saying various things she didn’t pick up on, a large wooden desk, some well set-up chairs, and a window that brought in some dull light to the place.

Fittingly, it shone on the brightest, fluffiest piece in the Room.

“Chara!” Asriel called, and the eldest Dreemurr shut out every stupid answer, every smart remark, every casual way of distancing that came to mind as she saw her little brother.

Her feet left the ground, and her hands went out as she launched herself, body going flying as she slammed herself into Asriel’s chest with the force of a Cruise missile, and sent Asriel flying with a grunt.

Luckily for both of them, The window she sent Asriel flying through was still on the first floor, as a bunch of anxious shouting erupted from behind them.

Chara didn’t care. She looked into Asriel’s eyes with the brightest smile she could manage, tears that had been held back for what felt like years finally able to flow as she had him pinned to the ground, before collapsing on top of him.

“I’m home, little brother.” Chara stammered out with a goofy grin, before soft, fluffy paws held her close and those big, warm eyes met hers with a dopey grin of their own.

“Welcome home, Chara.”

Asriel was not quick to pick up Chara from the ground, and Chara was not fast to say much, enjoying the warmth of the moment, but both of these things eventually faded.

Chara turned to the window at the same time Asriel did, still holding his hand as they looked into the staff.

“I feel as though there are questions I need to answer, and there is intelligence I need to pass on - to Mustang and Hawkeye both - but we will be back in a few hours.” Chara replied. “Could you make sure we are cleared to re-enter then?”

Havoc leaned out the window with a smirk. “Would it stop you if we said no?”

Chara would just give a grin. “Nah. you would need to bring a few platoons online to do that. And that is just to make me reconsider the effort involved.”

Havoc sighed. “Well, we’ll let people know you’re allowed on site for now. God forbid we make our secretaries waste their time. We’ll just say you’re temporarily on a case for us.”

Chara gave a smirk. “Perfect. In the meantime…”

Asriel put a rough, furry hand on Chara’s back. “In the meantime, we’re going to go. Somewhere private.”

Chara was shook out of her lazy smile by the steel suddenly in Asriel’s voice, as she turned to him.

“And you are going to explain things. Like you said you would. Right, sis?”

Chara blinked a few more times as she met Asriel’s emerald eyes, not sure what she was seeing. There was steel there, steel she’d seen before, like against the unmaking, but now it was being aimed at her.

“A-asriel?” She blurted, a little shocked as he took her hand.

“Chara.” He repeated, looking her in the eyes, as the window slammed behind the two, giving them some measure of privacy.

“I am very happy to have you home again. But you don’t… understand what it’s like. I had to watch every second of that. I saw what Lilith did to you. And I was crushed to watch what happened in the abyss. And I know you wouldn’t have entered it willingly, but that means something pushed you into it. And… whatever it was, whenever it was…”

Asriel’s voice fell slightly, but it did not lose it’s power. “...You faced all that alone.”

Chara’s smile was slightly nervous. “But I’m… fine-”

“But you’re not. It hasn’t been!” Asriel insisted, locking her in his gaze as he stepped forward. “Because I see when you think I’m not looking and you let that smile drop. Because I notice when you go off on your own to do things. I always have. And mom used to tell me to give you your space, and I am fine, giving you your space, Chara!” The younger Dreemurr insisted,

“But… not when every time you come back, you do it a little sicker.”

Chara stepped back a bit, a hand protectively clasped around her stomach.

“When I started off learning magic, it was to be a hero to my people, to live up to the expectations of their prince… but back in Cevanti, I was really just… doing it to impress you, y’know? I wanted you to say how great I was, even though I hadn’t realized you were doing that for me everyday. And when the siege happened and I… and I ran off, I realized…”

Asriel’s face did tear up now, as he pulled her closer. “I realised I lost the person that helped me be who I wanted to be. And that all you’d asked for me is to be happy. And without you, I… wasn’t even able to achieve that wish.”

Asriel’s face turned to a soft smile, as Chara found tears running down her own cheeks. “..and since that day we met on Nausicaa, I’ve been learning to be a hero for a different reason. You’ve been different since we met. Doing things in the background. And I saw a bit of it there, and even in that awful tournament. You pretended to not care, but you care about everyone, too. You’ve been protecting everyone from whatever this is for a long time, all by yourself… I’ve learned a lot since then, so this time, please… I know you want to protect me, and my dreams. I have learned to be a warrior so I can protect you, as well. So… tell me what’s been going on. Let me in. Not just as your goofy kid brother… I want to know what you’ve been going through. And I want to share whatever burden that is with you, together.”

Chara’s knees shook. She tried to think of a reply as Asriel held her closer. Her body was shaking, her eyes burning, as her instincts and experience screamed at her to end it, but… Asriel’s warmth had completely outdone her own conditioning, and she just found herself slumping against the goat-boy, as she felt something crack in her mind.

“...You’ve… grown up, Asriel.”

“You couldn’t be the only mature one forever, Chara.”

“...Okay. We’ll head somewhere else. And, I promise, even though it will take a long time, I will tell you everything.”

The compromise had been simple. They’d stop for ice cream first, then Chara would tell him everything. At first, Asriel had been pretty sure that this whole stunt was a way for Chara to buy time, to delay, because Chara liked to delay. Chara lied, that was a basic truth of his sister, and even if he didn’t like facing it, he was ready for if this turned into an elaborate ruse to avoid actually answering Asriel’s questions…

Now, with the taste of sugar and cold on his tongue, Asriel was pretty quick to realise that she was just trying to make sure he had something sweet to focus on in the middle of the telling. Chara told him about timelines and alternate dimensions and time stopping and restarting, true identities and mysteries revealed left and right, the past of their kind and the truth of darkseid’s danger. She told him of so many horrible things that had never happened, and she told him of many that had. Of where flowers came from and the darkness beyond the veil and the powers not even she understood but could see.

And all the while, He watched as the blood drained from her face and the sass drained from her voice, and Asriel’s heart broke as he watched his larger-than-life sister deflate with the telling. It reminded Asriel, bitterly, of an old pool toy slowly losing air, as he watched the enthusiasm drain from her eyes with every bit of the telling.

It got worse when she spoke of her portion, and got to the part where the human…

“So… it stopped them the first time. From killing you, I mean. I think whatever part of them that was uncorrupted still latched onto your voice. It brought them back. But… just once.” Chara admitted.

Asriel shivered, as the question came to his lips, unbidden.

“...So the second time, he… killed me. And King Sans…”

“It wasn’t… I could have disobeyed. And instead, I…” Chara stammered, as the two dangled from the rooftop. It was only two stories up on Asriel’s insistence, and seeing the pain flit through Chara’s eyes, he was glad he had.

“...You tried to keep us alive. Chara, I get it. It wasn’t your choice!” Asriel shouted, heat filling his snout. “You weren’t really given one.”

“...I did have a choice. And I let you die. I let you die a lot.” Chara admitted, and those glowing crimson eyes avoided his. “And then, half the time, I woke up the next day and lied to you about it when everything reset. Just… acting like nothing happened.”

The younger Dreemurr wanted badly to hug his sister, but it didn’t feel like the right solution, right now. “...And because of that, I got to live until now. That’s not so bad, Chara. I just… wish I could have been a help. All that time, I thought you had left me behind because… Well, I was too immature. Because I couldn’t be an adult. But you had to face all that, totally on your own and I… I wish you hadn’t had to. I wish anyone else had gotten to do it in your place. But I don’t think I could name anyone I’d trust to do it more than you, and… and that’s awful.” Asriel added with a frown. “You were ten. we were ten.”

Chara just repiied with a slow nod. “Sans used to say… that he wished I could do a worse job. So he could fire me.” She added with a soft chuckle. “It might have been the kindest thing he’d ever said.”

Asriel gave a soft smile, but the worry coursing through him prodded him too far, and he did hug her now, the gangly teen feeling rather light in his hands now, for some reason.

“...I didn’t hide it from you because I thought less of you. I just… didn’t want to think about it, once it was all over. I wanted to sell tacos and fight small-time crooks. To sing and dance and make terrible jokes. Stuff kids our age were supposed to do. I just wanted to stuff the rest in a closet and… forget it ever happened.” Chara mumbled, hands crossed around her legs.

Asriel Just gave a nervous smile. “...I guess, in a lot of ways… Cevanti was your favorite place, huh?” he asked, thinking all of the current days through

Chara’s smile fell slightly. “Asriel… my favourite place was the underground. I was happy to be above ground and able to see the stars again, but… not as much as everyone else. When we got out of the underground and everyone went their separate ways, I went from worrying about one human hurting the monsters I’d grown to love to…having a million of them.”

Asriel looked up to her with a sigh. “...I thought… after all this time…”

Chara sighed. “...I tried. I am still trying. But they have not exactly made it easy. They are still every bit as greedy and warlike. They still have their Caustics, and their Anders’, and even their Karl Jak’s… I cannot say there are not exceptions, but they have not changed that much.” Chara added with a scowl, and Asriel could read the girl he’d first met still hiding underneath all that, even if she’d grown up in a lot of ways.

“...I guess, for you, being stuck underground was kind of nice, huh?” Asriel asked, sadness entering his voice.

“But it wasn’t for you. Or for mom and dad. Or for the rest of the monsters. It definitely wasn’t doing the king any favors.” Chara responded. “...Reminds me. He left me some things I need to work on.”

Asriel blinked at the statement. “Wait, a while ago, or recently?”

“Recently. As in, before I left mount ebbott. He has went and gone on a journey, apparently. Trying to figure out this Darkseid stuff, same as us… but he apparently does not need weapons where he is going, so he left something in the lab ready to zap me when I entered.”
Asriel gave a blink, uncomprehending as he tried to process the words. “...Could you explain what you mean a little more clearly.”

Chara sighed. “...It would be easier to show you, actually. Though I am not remotely capable of using these in combat just yet.” the younger mage responded, before giving a snap of her fingers.

Asriel gasped, as White magic glowed behind Chara. The elongated, boney maw of a beast.

“Th-that’s…”

“The last fruits of the research done by a long-forgotten scientist. A judge’s final tool. He let me know he was finally firing me, then gave me the last thing I required to do my job.” Chara replied with a sigh, as the beast hovered, red eyes glowing in response to Chara’s own.

“Well, let’s see how Darkseid handles it, once I have them mastered. He certainly burned me enough with the damn thing in training… it might be rather satisfying to be on the other side of a gaster blaster, for a change.”
