Physical Description:

Two of four limbs remain, the empty sockets filled by hollow silver, moved by magic. This wizard often wears five o'clock shadow over his square chin. Auburn hair match the same hue of his eyes, and this tall, sinewy wizard looms above others with a black ripped cape shrouding his body in shadow. Beneath, his torso is taught in tape, and he wears blue shorts that go down to his knees.

Character History:

A clash of memories plagues this wizard's mind. Who was once a forty year old mage of Fairytail has lived many different tales. Today, he looks ten years younger yet is just as grizzled by time, there's a ferocity of fury in his eyes that implies a change, this change was delivered by perhaps one of the three fates, washing away his old memories and mixing them with a new profession: Mercenary work.

(Amnesia? No way, never a cliche-instead brainwashed by macbeth themed witch, yo)

Heya Sammy, welcome to MT!

Before we can approve your character, we'll just need to do a little work on your Abilities (Moves):

Abilities (1,000): Starvation and Thirst (50), Falling (100), Agility - 200, Damage – 100, Endurance 100, FINITE -50, ONGOING +100 , Illusion - 200 ,Sense - 100
What you've got here at the moment is just a list of Effects and Modifiers, not really an Ability.

Like on the OV, Abilities need names and descriptions explaining how they work. The good thing about the system here is that because the numbers are explained by the Effects and their Modifiers, the descriptions don't really need to be complicated, unless you're trying to do something fancy.

If you don't want to overcomplicate things then the best way is probably to group up all the passive, always-on type Effects into one Ability, like this:
Tough Guy [450]
Adaptation: Starvation and Thirst (50)
Adaptation: Falling (100)
Agility 1 - 200
Endurance 1 - 100

Gildarts is a pretty fit guy, doesn't get hungry, and isn't at all hindered by minor inconveniences like falling off cliffs.
Obviously, I'd expect you'll want to come up with a name and description on your own, this is just an example.

You'll notice that I've added the number "1" after Agility & Endurance. That's because they can be increased in rank to become more powerful, but based on the amount of Essence you had marked beside each, it looks to me like you're only wanting the cheapest rank for now. Although it is possible to tell an Effect's rank by the Essence value beside it, we still like to have the rank number included, as it just makes things easier.

Those Effects all have the Ongoing Modifier by default, so you don't need to pay extra for it. If you want to put Ongoing on something else, then it will cost 100 Essence per rank of the Effect. So if you wanted to upgrade your Sense Effect to rank 5, and make it Ongoing, then it would cost you 500 Essence for the Effect and another 500 for the Modifier.

Without Ongoing, Effects which aren't Ongoing by default can't be active for more than a few seconds at a time. So if Gil made an Illusion without having the Ongoing Modifier on his Illusion Effect, then it wouldn't last long.

Damage doesn't need Ongoing as each punch or kick is considered a separate activation of the Effect (Ongoing Damage would be something like setting someone on fire), but Sense and Illusion really benefit from it.

If you did want to take Ongoing Sense, here's an example of how you could write it:
Magic Sense [200]
Sense (extrasensory) 1 (100)
--Ongoing (100)

Gil is so awesome at magic that he can sense everything happening in his vicinity at all times, making it really difficult to sneak up on him.
You'll notice that I've written "(extrasensory)" beside the Sense Effect. That's because there are actually 4 categories for this Effect: sight, hearing, smell & extrasensory. Extrasensory covers all sorts of weird sensory powers, while the others are just amplified versions of normal senses.

DISCLAIMER: In the Ability examples I have provided above, I've listed the total cost beside the Ability's name at the top, and in the second one I've listed the Modifier beneath the Effect it modifies, indented by two hyphens. This Ability format is one I personally am very fond of, but it is not mandatory. So long as the format you use is easy to understand, you can write your Effect & Modifier lists however you please.

If you're still unsure about how best to write Gil's Abilities, you can check the rules page on Abilities for more thorough explanations than mine. Alternatively, you can ask any questions you have either here or on the Discord, and a member of staff will do their best to answer them for you.

P.S. It's possible that the rules still say 1500 somewhere, but the actual amount of starting Essence has been upgraded to 2000 now, instead of 1500. So you've got a bit more than you may have realised.

For “Survive” —

The Starvation and Thirst Adaptation costs 50 Essence, not 100.

Similarly, the Falling Adaptation costs 100 Essence, not 50.

You would usually write these as “Adaptation: Starvation and Thirst (50)” and “Adaptation: Falling (100).” Since Adaptation is the Effect these two adaptations fall under, you need to actually mention that Adaptation is the Effect your ability has.

Endurance is a separate Effect from Adaptation. List its Rank directly beside it. Ideally, also place each Effect on a separate line for clarity.

For example:

Survive (Total Essence Cost: 250)
  • Adaptation: Starvation and Thirst (50)
  • Adaptation: Falling (100)
  • Endurance Rank 1 (100)

For “Hallucination” —

You need to mention the Effect first. That is Illusion. Only then can you apply modifiers to that Effect— the modifiers must be clearly attached to an Effect.

So, you start with this:

Hallucination (Total Essence Cost: ??)
- Illusion Rank 1 (200)

But now you want to apply modifiers to your Illusion Effect!

Consider doing a reread of the section on Modifiers to fully understand. You’ve chosen one negative modifier (Finite) and one positive modifier (Ongoing). Negative modifiers SUBTRACT from your ability’s Essence cost, while positive modifiers ADD. This is because negative modifiers limit what you can do with your Ability, while positive modifiers increase what you can do with your Ability.

You want to add Ongoing (+100 per Rank of Effect) and Finite (-50 per Rank of Effect). The finished Ability would look something like this:

Hallucination (Total Essence Cost: 250)
- Illusion Rank 1 (200)
— Ongoing (+100)
— Finite (-50)

For “Awareness” —

Sense is the Effect you’ve chosen for this Ability. Because of this, you need to write it out with your chosen Rank directly beside it (or clearly associated) and then apply modifiers.

Awareness (Total Essence Cost: 200)
- Sense Rank 1 (100)
— Ongoing (+100)

You have to write the Ability so it’s clear you are applying the Ongoing modifier TO the Sense Rank 1 Effect. If you had multiple Effects listed as in your first Ability, it would be difficult to tell which modifiers matched up with what Effect.

For “Crash” —

Same as the above, just try to make it clear that your modifiers are attached to the Damage Effect. You don’t have to follow this exact formatting, but this is approximately how to do it:

Crash (Total Essence Cost: 150)
- Damage Rank 1 (100)
— Ranged (+50)

The Sense Effect refers to a specific type of sense, like sight, hearing, extrasensory etc. This would qualify as extrasensory in my opinion. You should mention that beside "Sense (100)".

Hallucination (300)
Illusion (sight and sound) (200) Rank 1, hoping to make rank 3 very soon
Ongoing (+100)

Finite (-50)

The vision is often based around the environment but deviates based on his creativity. It lasts no longer than five minutes.

For both Sight and Sound, this would cost 250E per rank of Effect. Also, you need to mention how long Gildarts needs to recharge this Effect in your description since you have the Finite modifier listed.

Pow! (50)
Rank 1
Damage (100)
Finite (-50)
Duration: immediate
Gil can punch or kick to cause others = PAIN.

The Finite modifier refers to Effects that you can regain the use of by reloading, recharging, fueling up, or doing something else, but it must take a narratively significant amount of time where you are focused exclusively on replenishing your supplies. In order for it to qualify as Finite, Effects that are continuously used should need to be "recharged" at least once per scene. You should mention how long Gildarts needs to recharge this Effect in your description.

For Hallucination, I didn't mean that the total cost is 250E and I apologize if my wording seemed that way. What I meant is that it costs 250E for each rank of the Illusion Effect because you've chosen both Sight and Sound as the senses your Illusion will target. This is in the Illusion Effect's description:

"You may create anything you so please within the given area of an Illusion Effect. However at the base cost you must choose: visible, audible, olfactory, tactile or taste. Specify what kind of Illusion it is when purchasing this Effect, such as: Illusion (Visible). In order to add an additional sense to your Illusion, you must pay +50 Essence Per Rank of Effect for each additional sense affected. For example, if you’d like to create an Illusion created both sight and sound, you would need to pay 250 Essence per Rank of Effect. In order to affect all the senses as though it was the real thing, you must pay 400 Essence per Rank of Effect. You can mix and match at your pleasure."

The ability would thus cost 350E overall, like so:

Hallucination (350)
Illusion (sight and sound) (250) Rank 1, hoping to make rank 3 very soon
Ongoing (+100)
Range (+50)
Finite (-50)
Gildarts wills a short term image that offsets his intended target. Used for strategy and sneaking, can in no way physically affect the person interacting, only visually and with sound.
