Arrogant Jazz
Arrogant - To his very core Mugen is anti-authority. He's lived his life by his own code and answers to no higher authority than his own ego and impulses. This is a pattern of behaviors that no amount of punishment or consequence can wring out of him.
Jazz - Mugen's fighting style is something like an untrained street fighter mixed with a well trained sword prodigy. His movements are erratic and unpredictable but like jazz music there is a chaotic beauty to their practical application in combat that creates an organized chaos on the battlefield.

He doesn't know when he transitioned or how. One day Mugen fell asleep under a tree. When he awoke...well, he was under a different tree. It was tough to say exactly what about the tree was different but something certainly was. The surrounding forest was definitely different.
When he made his way back to the nearest town to try and scrounge up something to eat there was no town to be found. His feet had carried him back the exact way he had come from, but what he had left was not present for his return. Mugen scratched his head in confusion, shrugged, took a pull of a hip flask full of sake, and then continued on his way without giving it another thought.
