I've recently had someone ask me my RL self because I'm suddenly referring to myself as "he" and "his" when messing around on Discord as Totoro, when I used to use female pronouns on OV. So, to stop any confusion before it comes up, I wanted to explain things :)

I usually refer to myself by the gender pronouns of my characters, especially when messing around in pseudo-IC whether that's as Ammy, Totoro or Mewtwo. Ammy being a girl means I used "she", for instance!

On the other hand, I (as in my IRL self) keep my real and my online self very separate, hence why I don't associate a real name or face to my online presence. As such I'm happy with being referred to as my character (or Ammy, for you OV veterans!) whether it be "he" for Totoro, "she" for Ammy or "it" for Mewtwo.

Does that change anything for 99,9% of you awesome people? ? Probably not but, in case you were wondering now you know. Thanks for reading!

Wait...
Mewtwo is an "it"? I'm no Pokemon expert, but I was sure that Pokemon were split into males and females.

Oh yeah, and that stuff about your gender pronouns is cool. ?

Yup, Mewtwo's genderless. In fact, most (all?) legendaries are, and there's even some regular ones that are also genderless. I occasionally slip up and refer to my character as male because its voice is male, but the correct pronoun for Mewtwo is 'it'.

? Although there's some 'it' mons which are very clearly intended to be male or female, like Latios and Latias and probably some others, just going by the anime and movies. I think in most cases it's mechanical/inorganic Pokemon that are genderless, like Voltorb or Magnetite (although, most of those can breed with Ditto) but I figure that legendaries are categorized as genderless because they're unique on the planet, so there is no second gender to compare them to, or for them to breed with.

Funfact, one of the later movies had a second Mewtwo whose voice was female. It looked the same as the first Mewtwo though... make of that what you will.

Huh. Neat. That point about the legendaries does make sense.

I don't think I've watched the movie with the female Mewtwo, as I only remember two movies with Mewtwo, and I'm pretty sure they were both voiced by the same person. Prior to being told about this movie, I would've figured all Mewtwo would sound alike, but now that you've mentioned one with a female voice (I assume you mean the psychic voice, not just the voice used when it says its name aloud), my interpretation of that would probably be that the reason for the different voices would be gender identity.

Obviously, having a male/female voice wouldn't necessarily mean anything for a normal Pokemon, but since Mewtwo speaks psychically, I reckon it could be relevant in its case, with the voice projected matching its gender (since the reason for the one with the female voice having a female voice could be because it views itself as female, and the opposite being true for the OG Mewtwo). Also, note that I said "gender" and not "sex" in the previous sentence. The information given in the Pokemon games seems to indicate sex, rather than gender (as it relates to the breeding of Pokemon). So technically, you could say Mewtwo could be either male or female, regardless of its lack of a biological sex.

I'm totally derailing this thread, amn't I?

If you're interested, the movie's called "Genesect and the Legend Awakened", it's the 16th Pokémon movie. Haven't seen it myself yet, though! The ones you're thinking of are movie 1 and 4, which feature the same Mewtwo (the one I'm playing as), so I suppose that's why the same VA is voicing it.

Gender identity is probably the most likely reason for their voices sounding male or female, I agree. In which case it would also make more sense that the original Mewtwo is male, given that males are historically more linked to battle and the like, and the scientists that made it wanted the 'most powerful' Pokémon. Either that, or its genetic parent Mew is also a male ? But yeah, in both cases I am referring to Mewtwo's telepathic voice, I don't think we've ever heard it speak its species name like other mons would.

I'll still go with referring to Mewtwo as an it, just feels right I guess ? Without going into a gender VS sex debate though, I'd say that if Mewtwo did have a biological sex, mine would be a male. But biologically speaking it's genderless... no idea how it takes care of going number one, but there we go.

Ehhh, you're fine! I'm really enjoying this little debate and I'd say that's what counts!

honestly, given it's just an interpretation of a psychic voice that ash and co. are hearing I wouldn't say it necessarily speaks to either gender identity. Voices definitely have differences depending on sex, but it could just as well have more to do with their personality. Mewtwo #1 sounds rather male, but it's a deep voice that commands respect. It's a very strong voice. given it's fiery personality and the way he'd like to project himself, particularly given his primary source of someone with a character of 'strength' being Giovanni, the voice he chooses to use in that case makes sense.

Still don't think it has to have nothing to do with gender identity - it could - but it's just as easy to think that they might not have one, or. It might just not be something a Mewtwo even thinks about.

I know next to jack diddly about Pokemon, however I'm Enby (non-binary), so it's pretty cool that you kinda have the same approach to pronouns that I do. Like, I personally don't mind what pronouns people use for me. Most people will use she/her, but I actually adore he/him being used for me as well, and "they/them" is fine as well! I just don't like being called 'it' ever. I don't think I've met an Enby that actually liked being called 'it'?

I digress. This is honestly very cool that you're relaxed about this stuff. I guess it's actually sorta comforting to me in a way uwu

While I'm happy that you find this cool I just wanted to make sure that you got why I made this post - my point isn't to say that I'm comfortable being referred to with any pronoun (which I am!) but to clarify that on OV, MT and Discord I refer to myself by the pronouns of the characters I'm playing in places like the OV chatbox, and that those pronouns aren't related to my IRL sex or gender.

Someone PMed me asking something to the effect of "I thought you were a girl? Why are you using 'he' in MT when you used 'she' in OV?" which is what prompted this thread. Them's just the pronouns of my characters - for all you internet-friends know the "me" behind the screen could be a guy, gal, non-binary or a magical genderless alien from space, and I like to keep it that way :D Whichever pronoun you opt to use when talking about me I'll be fine with.

I'm always interested in Dischord activity, since its a medium that I have never, nor am I likely to ever, interact with anyone via such a medium, and there seems to be norms and tendencies on such a form of interaction, which are somewhat different from anything else I can compare it to.

For those that don't know, Dischord is not Screen-reader accessable, and at last check-in there is no rush to make it that way.
