Overview/Notable Features (top)

Why are you here. This seems to be the singular question that runs through the mind of anyone approaching this far-flung, forsaken ball. From orbit, Inverxe appears to be little more than a simple ice world, pocked with the occasional thermal vent or supervolcano. Lazy plumes of russet ash drift through the thin, frigid atmosphere that even the most staunch extremophiles find trying. It is, in fact, the lone companion of a lonely gas giant, named Ioun. Ioun is known for its shocking lavender hue and high concentrations of atmospheric Helium 3, but otherwise unremarkable.

Terrain/Climate (top)

There are, of course, a few scattered, habitable colonies on the surface of Inverxe. Some of them are even still occupied. The safest areas on the planet tend to be small fortified villages perched high in the crags of dormant volcanic mountains. These tend to act as the primary import and export hubs for the hard-won mineral wealth that is taken from deep within the tectonic moon. These intrepid souls are doubtlessly drawn by the promise of uncontested mineral wealth that Inverxe offers. Few, however, are willing to withstand the slow, creeping horror of enslavement or consumption by the planet's interior.

Inverxe had a lower apparent mass than its immense size would suggest, because vast amounts of its depths are hollowed out by immense caverns and superchasms. Warmed by the highly radioactive core, as well as tidal friction from Ioun, the twisted, yawning innards of the huge moon are volcanic and highly unstable. More than one mining outpost has been swallowed up by the tectonic chaos of Inverxe, but these cataclysms are at least predictable. What is more insidious is the effect the moon seems to have on the mind. People who stay here in extended tenures slowly lapse into malaise and hopelessness. Others succumb more quickly, snapping within weeks to become bloodthirsty psychopaths. Both victims tend to feel an inexorable draw to the moon's center, eventually disappearing into Inverxe's underside without a trace.

If the madness doesn't get you, the weather might. If it isn't crystal clear, Inverxe is often barely visible beneath 'storms'. The outer atmosphere is too cold to support any actual 'storm fronts', but occasionally windstorms will kick up clouds of ice and grit that act more akin to sandstorms than blizzards.

Wildlife (top)

The natural flora and fauna of Inverxe is scattered and pathetic. The climate on the surface rarely goes above negative twenty degrees Fahrenheit, so only the toughest of plantlife can survive. Additionally, it is very rare for there to be true nightfall on Inverxe. Between normal sunlight, or the sky being illuminated by the glow of Ioun, it is rarely darker than an eerie twilight. Only on the months when Inverxe passes behind Ioun's shadow does True Night come...which is also when bad things tend to happen.

The cyclopean horrors that hunt the moon's visitors are well-known. Scuttling beasts like Remorhazzes, Cthonians, Wampas, Necromorphs and Xenomorphs all call this hellish place home, and can be repelled with enough training and courage. The more difficult foes are the handful of organized natives who are able to eke out small empires in the churning innards of Inverxe.

Errata (top)

  • Inverxe is roughly the size of Mars, and it is the only natural satellite of Ioun, a purple gas giant roughly the size of Saturn (with no rings).
  • By all accounts, Inverxe should not exist in as close an orbit to Ioun as it does. Nothing about the moon makes astro-geological sense.
  • Inverxe AMA (Live Doc)

Corruption World Quests

"An Arbiter’s Tears"
Quest Giver: Up to You
Quest Length: 2,500 words
Quest Location: Inverxe
Quest Prerequisites: None
Quest Description: Rose Quartz isn't anything like Darkseid has put into the Crossroads so far. Her fanatical desire for peace, harmony and love has sent infectious compassion into the very stone of the ice moon, causing it to bloom and grow with random oases of lush jungle beauty. Is the World truly being made better, though? Stumbling upon once of these gardens, you can't help but notice that the docile horrors and fragrant bushes seem somehow...hollowed out, as if some of their core essence has been stolen by Rose Quartz's forceful indoctrination. Do you dare tear down these peaceful gardens and return Inverxe to the brutal, freezing hell it is meant to be?

Repeatable? No

"Red Alert"
Quest Giver: Kaalakiota Corp. Liaison
Quest Length: 5,000 words
Quest Location: CRVIII 'The Hub'
Quest Prerequisites: A personal starship vehicle base or master skills in machinery, engineering, computers, repair work, etc.
Quest Description: Following the devastating attack from Rose Quartz against The Hub in her initial appearance, the massive space arcology is struggling to carry out repairs and lock down its civilian trade traffic. Half the station is overrun with a variety of Unmade humanoid monstrosities, and the other half is in smoldering disrepair.

Tibus Heth and his brutal, militaristic Number One, Captain Sylvia 'Killy' Tilly need your help in restoring order to CRVIII, either through helping get the automated defenses back online, or, fighting off any of the heavily armed gunboats and destroyers that are being intermittently hijacked and corrupted by Unmade pilots.

Repeatable? No
Rewards: +3 Influence with Kaalakiota Corp.

"Only Room for One Horde on This Planet”
Quest Giver: A Chance Encounter with Queen Myrrah
Quest Length: 10,000 words
Quest Location: Inverxe Depths
Quest Prerequisites: Must have completed "An Arbiter's Tears", 2 Writers preferred.
Quest Description: Normally, it's a pretty good idea to stay very far away from the Locust Horde whenever they're known to be active in a given area of Inverxe. But today...today you just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. Perhaps a chasm opens beneath you, or you turn a dark, twisting corridor to find a pitched battle between hulking Locust Brutes and slavering, mindless abominations bewitched by Rose Quartz's mindnumbing indoctrination.

Queen Myrrah herself is present, flying on the back of her thundering war beetle, but the Locust seem to be on the retreat. You have a choice in this moment; do you rush in to the Horde's aid and join their campaign against the Unmade Arbiter's rosy assimilation? The partnership is unlikely to last long, but...if you could organize and rouse the entire Locust Swarm against Rose Quartz's presence on Inverxe, even a dark god such as her would have a hard time wrestling with their massed armies.

But you'll have to win this losing fight, and talk them into taking you (peacefully) back to their warrens to make the necessary preparations for your campaign...

Faction Quests

"Once More Unto the Breach" (Faction Quest)
Quest Giver: Rock Raider’s recruiter (probably on CRVIII 'The Hub' but maybe on the surface or through ‘the Medium Communication’s Board)
Quest Length: 5,000 words
Quest Location: Inverxe (Various, under the surface)
Quest Prerequisites: Must not be Notorious or Hated with Rock Raider’s or Kaalakiota Corp.

Quest Description: You like to do things the hard way, it would seem. Why else would you be responding to a posting asking for ‘souls of high constitution and sound mine and body’ to go help the Rock Raiders with one of their more recent mining operations on the surface. Surely you’d be better off just sticking to ‘the Hub’ and making a living up there, where money and goods are exchange through digital modalities and you can make your money on ‘futures’ or other sorts of investments?

But no, you just had to put yourself down in these tunnels, helping with an operation that will likely fall under siege from monsters and demons and all sorts of foul things.

Quest Rewards: Standard Coin reward, + 3 Influence with the Rock Raider’s, -3 Influence with underground Inverxe factions

Repeatable: N

"In Pursuit of the Unknown" (Faction Quest)
Quest Giver: Wayward denizen of Fal Zhardum Din
Quest Length: 5,000 words
Quest Location: Inverxe (Various, under the surface)
Quest Prerequisites: Must not be Notorious or Hated with the Dwemer Kingdom AND need a Master Skill related to Diplomacy, Charisma, or Intimidation + 1000 Coin

Quest Description: You find yourself, for whatever reason, lost among the tunnels of Inverxe. You’re aware that this is place that drives people literally insane, right?

Among your ‘journey’, you stumble across a wounded Dwemer. This wounded ‘Deep Elf’ has been performing a variety of magical experiments in this particular stretch of tunnels (feel free to style this as you please), but amid their laser focus on their work, they were ambushed by creatures. While untrusting of outsiders, the Deep Elf clearly needs help, and if you push enough, they’ll accept your medical aide and ask you to help them recover their work.

Your investigation will lead you to discover that the research wound up in the hands of some Rock Raiders. If you are capable of it, you can negotiate with the Raiders and possibly pay some Coin … or you can just take the research by force. Either way, the Dwemer will be pleased and return to Fal Zardum Din.

Special Note: If your character does not have the Master Skills to defuse/negotiate and then pay off the Raiders, you can kill them at the cost of being Notorious (having a bounty) with the Rock Raiders. If you have the skills but don’t have the Coin, you will have to resort to violence as well. Those are your options. If you don’t like ‘em, you don’t have to do the Quest.

Quest Rewards: Standard Coin reward, +3 Influence with the Dwemer Kingdom; -3 Influence from the Rock Raiders and Kaalakiota Corp. + possibly a bounty from either of those factions

Repeatable: N

"Camping the Gates"
Quest Giver: Khan Noonien Singh if Kaalakiota -3 or Tibus Heth if Kaalakiota +3
Quest Length: 5,000 words
Quest Location: CRVIII ‘The Hub’
Quest Prerequisites: A Working Spaceship, +3 or -3 Notoriety with Kaalakiota.
Quest Description: Well look at you, spacer. Finally managed to make your name known up here in the stars of the Crossroads. Luckily for you, there happens to be a pretty hot market on intrepid starship pilots willing to get their hands dirty in the name of quick profit.

If you’re the pirating type, you’ll want to head down into the seedier parts of CRVIII to find the reaver known as Khan. He’s a real piece of work, but knows a valuable mercenary when he sees one. He’ll be happy to send you on a quick raid against a choice target his informational sources have identified. Naturally, you’ll get your cut from the stolen goods.

If you want to go above board, it should be easy to schedule a quick video meeting with Mr. Tibus Heth of Kaalakiota. The Corporation is very interested in keeping the trade routes and supply chains of the Crossroads in safe, working condition. ARC is helpful in that regard, but their bleeding heart routine doesn’t always get the job done. Spill some pirate blood, and Tibus Heth will be happy to get you a good deal on your next starship overhaul.

Rewards: Security: 20% Discount on next Vehicle Base coin purchase, +3 Influence with Kaalakiota and ARC. Piracy: 2,000 Bonus Coin, -3 Influence with Kaalakiota and ARC, possible a Bounty with either or both factions/spoiler]

"Deal with the Devilfish"
Quest Giver: A Surprisingly Friendly Mind Flayer
Quest Length: 10,000 words
Quest Location: Inverxe Depths
Quest Prerequisites: Suffering from the Malaise
Quest Description: At some point, you wake up and realise that you’ve been wandering around the damp, humid caverns of this stupid moon for a bit too long. In a fleeting moment of clarity, you check your surroundings to find that you’re completely lost, deep under the frozen earth of the forsaken moon.

But, maybe that’s okay. There’s a brainsucking squid looking at you hungrily from across this cave. You’ve heard about the Ilithid and their psychic nonsense. Will this one eat your grey matter, or does it have some horrible experiment in store for you? Why aren’t you running?

A voice infiltrates your awareness.

Ahh my precious, little noodle. Such wasted potential to see you wandering like this. How about a pact? The Elder Brains might need your...help...in a small matter. We need some sensitive information retrieved from one of those other pretender factions on this moon. Bring us the intelligence we need, and the Elders will be happy to...modify...your cognition against the ravages of these caves.

Repeatable? N
Rewards: Immunity to the Malaise of Inverxe. +3 Influence with the Ilithid Combine, -3 Influence and a Bounty with chosen Inverxe faction.

"Last, Best Hope" (Faction Quest)
Quest Giver: An Izzet Guildmage
Quest Length: 10,000 words
Quest Location: The Azure Citadel & Surrounding Area
Quest Prerequisites: Not Hostile with The Izzet League, Completed an Unmaking Quest
Quest Description: It takes a lot of work to sustain and create a lasting settlement on the ice moon. Some would even call it a pet project suitable for only the most intrepid madmen of the Crossroads...such as Niv Mizzet. The Mindstorm Dragon is determined to maintain his citadel of magical engineering and arcane research open and hospitable to the greatest minds remaining in these darkened times.

The Izzet League is looking for either a capable mercenary or savvy organizer to help them keep the citadel up and running. They’ve encountered all of the usual troubles of an Inverxe surface colony - madness, hunger, invasive monstrosities - but the Locust Horde seems to have taken particular issue with their presence on the moon.

If you can credibly help them repel these threats to their research collective, they’d be happy to lend you some of their research and engineering expertise in return.

Or money, if you’re a pedestrian schlep.

Repeatable? Y
Rewards: +3 Influence with The Izzet League, 20% Discount on your next Consumable or Base Coin Purchase OR 2,000 Bonus Coin

There are those who might claim that the barren, inhospitable moon of Inverxe could not possibly be any worse than it already is. How wrong these fools are. Even now, my power grows within the heart of Ioun's orbital companion. The darkest pits of the Kaalakiota trade station fester with the shadow that is Darkseid. The disenfranchised clamor to the clarion call of doom's pied fluting, pretending that I care for them. It is just as well, for soon I will release them from the pain of existence.

None of the Crossroad's daring heroes rise to my challenge. I am in the highest courts of the Dwemer, and the Locust horde is bleeding drones as I peel them away from their Queen's control. Soon it will be time to advance on the heart of the moon, and I shall plunder its richest seam; the very soul of the World itself.

Inverxe will soon join Govermorne in dark, quiet nothingness...

It is time.

The inchoate, abortive attempt at godhood that is Hastur has finally succumbed to my dark entreaties. Soon Inverxe will know a terror and despair so beautiful that not even the most moon-addled brains will be able to resist falling in line with it.

She approaches now, from the heart of Ioun...that pink and purple gem who shall be my harbinger among the icy fields of the hollow moon.

Come, Rose Quartz. Bring your withering attentions upon the suffering, avaricious masses of this blasted world, and show them just how suffocating a mother's love can be...
