No! It's part of our studies...

Ah, yes... Alchemy...
Dora.jpg
Alchemy is the foundation of all Psynergy...
Dora.jpg
And you all know Mt. Aleph is the greatest source of Alchemy.

We knew that? Did you know that? I didn't know that. But I guess now we do know! Or....now we know that we already knew?

Alchemy... I wonder what use it all is?

Your mother would rather see you grow up to be a happy, ordinary man.

But I suppose you still want to go...

Well...if it's that important to you, I guess not... [No.]

It's nice of you to humor me, but I know you don't mean it.

Woot! Party members!

And as a side note: this is when you FINALLY regain control again that isn't selecting dialogue choices, after the battle against the mysterious couple where we got our asses kicked.

Truly, the early parts of this game are...tedious...

That...is a very good question. He seems to have very swiftly undone Isaac's patch job....so at the very least you're gonna need more straw, and probably a better way of patching it than presumably the "shoving fistfuls of straw into the hole and slapping it down until it's sort of even" method Isaac used.

Just a thought.

For now, though, let's et to wandering around aimlessly to explore the village while it's not in the middle of an unnatural disaster!

Garet%27s_Grandfather.jpg
At the very least, visitors should introduce themselves to the mayor.
Garet%27s_Grandfather.jpg
There seems to be an apalling group in town that won't even do that...
Garet%27s_Grandfather.jpg
What's the world coming to?
MrJerra.jpg
Garet has grown quite strong in the past three years.
MrJerra.jpg
Please watch over him.

Such a very...diverse range of topics in this family.

As the icons for his family will show, Garet's last name is apparently Jerra. This is never mentioned anywhere in the game. Very strange, indeed.

Also strange is the familial concern here. While certainly touching, it seems misplaced; why would we be watching over Garet if he's become so strong? I know he's not the brightest knife in the crayon box, but...c'mon, man.

Ah, well. Let's keep movin'!

Sunshine.jpg
I sure wish I could hear the stories of travelers.

Yeah. In case it wasn't obvious, the mustachioed 'Sunshine' icon there is the image I'm using for any 'generic' NPCs who don't have an icon of their own, courtesy of another LP I've read doing the same. it was a good idea, and a use for an icon which otherwise doesn't get used for some reason!

Anyhoot. Let's keep moving!

And here we have the shrine. The old man here is the Great Healer. There's usually one in every major town or city you go to. For an appropriate fee, they can revive party members who have been defeated in battle, cure you of any poison or other ailments, remove you of any hauntings or possessions, and break any cursed binding bad equipment to you.

They're handy to have, especially in the early game before you figure out how things work, but...not THAT important in the long term.

We head on out. And since we're already in the neighborhood, let's head on up to Sol Sanctum!

Hey, geography lesson. That's actually pretty neat. As with many JRPGs, this game has several different continents and other landmasses. We only really explore one or two of them in this game, but in the sequel we get to see much more of the world!

The world map for the world of Golden Sun, Weyard, makes everything seem quite large and expansive. The scale for some things is thrown off as it is often with JRPG world maps, but especially for a handheld system-based game it still manages to be fairly impressive. The only problem I have with it is how bizarrely everything is set up, how much unused dead empty space there is and how arbitrarily areas are cut off or separated by such a vast profusion of rivers it's a wonder the entire continent isn't a swamp.

But enough nitpicking about imaginary geography, let's get back to poking around at random.

I have you and Garret to thank for that, Isaac.

.....man this game really likes to keep violently slamming it home just how rough that night three years ago was for Jenna and her family. Yeouch.

Let%27s%20Play%20Capture00177.jpg

SERIOUSLY GAME. WE GET IT!

Janna had it unquestionably rough. Not only losing all of her immediate family, but losing them all at once in a split second, right in front of her eyes. It's awful, an event I can't really pretend to truly comprehend or imagine, but just...

Yikes this introductory part just doesn't want to let you forget it. It's even more of a gut punch when you remember Jenna's in the party right now, and probably not really liking the constant reminders.

Never mind that, aside from his own mom, no one even really mentions how hard it must be for Isaac. Sure in comparison he 'only' lost his dad, but...still. This ain't a contest or something, they were both kids around the same age. Why is only one being constantly brought up and talked about?

This game, I swear...

....but whatever. Let's go to the plaza! See how things are doing there. With everything not falling apart or under siege from terrible super-magic storms, maybe we can talk to people normally. And check out the shops!

Isaac2.jpg
I have a strict policy of trying not to deliberately do things that go against our village's customs and laws even if they're silly. [No.]
Sunshine.jpg
What? You're too serious, Isaac...
Sunshine.jpg
Only someone who has Psynergy would figure it out...

Gee, what an astoundingly observant statement. It boggles my mind how literally everyone here seems to think Psynergy is exclusive to this one tiny village and nowhere else in the world.

This is true! Remember earlier how someone mentioned Psynergy Stones, and how they'd fully replenish your PP instantly? Well, your PP also slowly regenerates over time just by walking around. This means that, in effect, if you're willing to wait long enough you never need to use an Inn; just heal up, then jog in circles around town to replenish your PP.

Inns are still convenient to do it in a flash, of course, and gold is usually plentiful enough that the cost isn't a worry. But it's still amusing.

Also, Psynergy Stones are surprisingly common, even if they don't seem to work the same way for other people as they do for us. Remember that guy in the tutorial who only recharged his Psynergy a little by touching that huge one in the plaza? Yeah. Our party can pick up ones about the size of a basketball and fully recharge everyone.

....those stones DO shatter into dust when used, though. So many that explains it.

Or maybe game mechanics are just weird!

Bleh. Even when someone does bother to care enough to mention how hard it was for Isaac, they still manage to harp on about how much worse it was for Jenna.

I have to wonder if she just hasn't made it known she doesn't want to think about that night, or if other people are just that clueless or insensitive.

....given this game, I'm willing to bet it's actually both.

A surprisingly insightful guess from this random NPC. Bad enough facial scars would probably be a pretty good reason to wear a mask and cover them up. My first guess would probably go more toward 'hiding their identity' of course, but still. Not a bad guess.

Let%27s%20Play%20Capture00202.jpg

Let%27s%20Play%20Capture00203.jpg

Six coins for a full heal isn't bad; that's only 2 coins per party member. We don't need it right now, of course, given we're at full health, but still nice to know it's so cheap.

Let%27s%20Play%20Capture00205.jpg

It's almost as if the game is trying to tell us something.

So we leave mister mysterious grumpy mask man alone for now, and head on out. To the shops, of course! As we saw at the inn, we've got over 300 gold to play with!

The weapon shop here sells some basic stuff. We grab some longswords for Isaac and Garet for a bit of an attack boost, and sell their old shortswords. We also sell off unneeded gear, like the herbs, antidote and smoke bomb for a nice little profit.

Let%27s%20Play%20Capture00224.jpg

The armor shop similarly sells some basic stuff. We pick up some travel vests for all three party members, and also grab some wooden shields for Isaac and Garet, while selling off their old gear.

Let%27s%20Play%20Capture00226.jpg

Aside from having an exceptionally cute owner, the item shop sells very basic stuff. Only herbs and antidote here, which we pass on.

Let's head back outside and talk with the rest of the people hanging out in the plaza, shall we?

Sunshine.jpg
With Psynergy, the more you practice, the more you learn.

Sunshine.jpg
Did the travelers that stopped by today go to meet the mayor?
Isaac2.jpg
From what I heard, it doesn't seem like it. [No.]
Sunshine.jpg
It's very polite to visit the mayor when coming to a new town.
Sunshine.jpg
It's just shameful not to do that.
Garet2.jpg
If I ever visited a town, I'd be sure to greet the mayor.
Isaac2.jpg
I don't know if you could even find the mayor in a different town...

But he takes after his father, so I'm sure he'll grow to be a fine man.

Ah, yes...some evidence that the main characters weren't the only ones to sffer tragedy in that storm three years ago. Sad to hear about.

Sunshine.jpg
Long ago, my grandfather was a powerful Adept... I'm so proud of him.

Sunshine.jpg
Kraden had visitors when I dropped by his place this morning.
Sunshine.jpg
I wonder what became of them...

Sunshine.jpg
Well, if it isn't Isaac. It's just another quiet day in Vale.

Garet2.jpg
Let's... Let's go, Isaac.

Oooookay.... Now I really am lost here. Do Garet and Isaac not remember these two from three years ago? You'd think being beaten nearly to death and exploded by fireballs would leave a pretty strong impression. Isaac and Garet being nervous would then make sense here, but Garet mouthing off about them sneaking around doesn't.

...but, then again, I guess it's also fair enough to say they might not remember them what with the whole 'terrible storm and family-related tragedy', on top of being beaten nearly to death. Memories might get a little cloudy, or intentionally shut out just so they can sleep at night without awful near-death nightmares.

....but then, do Saturos and Menardi not remember them? They did pretty much confront them directly. but on the same hand...it HAS been three years, and they've grown up some, not to mention with the whole storm thing they might not have gotten a good look to begin with. Maybe they just literally didn't care enough to remember, or are such bad guys they don't bother to remember every child they almost murder in cold blood.

Or maybe Camelot just isn't the greatest at this whole 'coherent plot writing' thing? Who knows.

Let's keep moving! We can, of course, immediately talk to Saturos and Menardi again if we so choose.

And the four Elemental Stars are the key?
Kraden.jpg
These are things even I, a trained Alchemy sage, do not know.

....huh. That sure is a lot of incredibly valuable information Kraden is babbling about out loud, out in the open, where anyone wandering by could easily overhear. This man is a trained sage, and supposed to be incredibly smart -- and cunning beyond measure, as the two mysterious interlopers noted -- but he isn't doing an exceptional job proving it.

Maybe he's one of those cases where he's so smart he loses all common sense and social tact? A genius idiot.

It's those two, isn't it? Saturos and Menardi were their names, right?
Kraden.jpg
Are they still out there? They're very persistent...
Jenna2.jpg
Did they want something from you, Kraden?
Kraden.jpg
That seems to be the case...
Jenna2.jpg
Seems to be?
Kraden.jpg
Mt. Aleph and Sol Sanctum...
Kraden.jpg
They spoke as if they'd seen them with their own eyes...
Kraden.jpg
Isn't that strange?

Now. As we know, given Saturos and Menardi were discussing it three years ago and we overheard it (and almost got murdered for it), they've physically been into Sol Sanctum themselves. This is supposedly A Big Deal of some kind. Isaac at least, if not Garet, should already know this given he overheard it.

...but again, that whole thing with memories. So I'll sort of let it slide, especially when compounded by Kraden's babbling.

Kraden.jpg
Why, I had to wait many years before I was allowed into the sanctum.
Kraden.jpg
Of course it's strange.
Jenna2.jpg
And if they entered secretly, then they might be thieves!

Now, this may sound like a bit of a rash jump in judgement to make, but...it's also not an entirely inaccurate one. There's not many reasons someone would sneak into an isolated mountain village, then into their secret temple and accidentally unleash a super-storm upon said village and not seem to be too bothered by the (presumably) many allies/teammates they lost in the process. Being thieves there to steal...something does make the most sense, logically speaking.

Garet2.jpg
We have to go tell the high elders and the villagers!
Kraden.jpg
Wait, everyone!

Kraden.jpg
I still don't know how accurate the things they said were...
Kraden.jpg
We can do nothing until we confirm what they told me.

Kraden, I'm sorry. But that is 100% wrong. There is plenty you could do, the least of which is to assume they are right, and go warn the elders and villagers so they can be stopped. Even if they're wrong, it's nothing but justifiable caution.

Never even minding that, going to 'confirm what they told you' sounds like a VERY bad idea in general.

Jenna2.jpg
Then what should we do?
Kraden.jpg
Well, we go confirm it.
Garet2.jpg
...Do you mean we should go into Sol Sanctum ourselves?
Jenna2.jpg
Isn't that impossible?

It's not impossible. You know this, Jenna. Kraden JUST said he's literally been in there himself.

Kraden.jpg
Why would it be?

Let%27s%20Play%20Capture00336.jpg

I like to imagine this is everyone being speechless at Kraden's ineptitude. He doesn't bother to offer up any reason why it isn't, after all, just assuming that it should be obvious.

I know it's probably actually meant as an illustration of how everyone is silent trying to think of some reason why, but...I like my version better. It's more amusing.

Kraden.jpg
Just because climbing Mt. Aleph is forbidden?
Isaac2.jpg
Well yes. That. It's forbidden, so that means we can't. There's probably a good reason for it, so—
Kraden.jpg
We're just going to see whether they've been to the mountain.
Kraden.jpg
Surely, that would be acceptable!
Garet2.jpg
We'll be fine if they don't see us, right?
Isaac2.jpg
I guess so, but—
Garet2.jpg
Right. We won't be doing anything bad up there.
Jenna2.jpg
This will just be our secret, OK?
Isaac2.jpg
I can promise not to tell anyone else, but—
Kraden.jpg
Then it's decided!
Kraden.jpg
We'll make you the leader, OK, Isaac?
Isaac2.jpg
Wait, what? I don't—

There are some dangerous places between Mt. Aleph and Sol Sanctum.

Spoiler Alert: No there aren't.

Garet2.jpg
So I'll take over if you get nervous.
Jenna2.jpg
If Garet is our leader, we'll be the ones who are nervous.
Jenna2.jpg
Don't you agree, Kraden?
Garet2.jpg
You don't have to be mean...

[Kraden inexplicably runs back into his house to grab something from a table.]

Did that seem jarring? Because I didn't cut out any dialogue or anything. Kraden doesn't explain what he went inside for. Doesn't explain what exactly 'this' is. Or what 'best bet' he's talking about. It all boggles my mind just what the heck he's actually up to here.

But...le sigh. Let's just go rummage through his shit before we head out. There are several bookshelves to be had, so let's get reading.

frame.jpg
There's a book entitled "Encyclopedia of Alchemy."
frame.jpg
"All things are composed of four elements: earth, water, fire and wind..."

Let%27s%20Play%20Capture00358.jpg

frame.jpg
There's a book entitled "The Fountain of Tolbi."
frame.jpg
"The fountain of Tolbi will test your luck..."

frame.jpg
There's a book titled "In Search of the Ancient Lemurians."

frame.jpg
There's a notebook called "Study of Alchemy."
frame.jpg
"To understand Alchemy, one must understand the Elemental Powers..."
frame.jpg
That's where the script ends...

So with our reading done, we get a move on and head back toward the path up to Mt. Aleph.
