When the recording starts a screen springs to life, displaying the determined face of Major Mustang. His head has been bandaged, and his uniform has been torn in several places, but he seems quite collected despite the injuries. The thudding of artillery fire is audible in the background.
“Greetings. I am Major Roy Mustang of Palatinus’s Eastern branch, and I am requesting your help. Our city is under siege by a force beyond the scope anything we have seen before. Our defenses are holding but they are badly strained, and I am concerned they might break.”
He points into the screen, eyes locked on the camera.
“If you consider yourself a hero, there are countless innocents in Markov depending on these defenses to hold. I would ask that you consider carefully if what you’re doing right now is really more important than their lives.”
He straightens back up, adopting a much more formal and distant tone as he continues.
“If you only work for gratitude that takes a material form, I will see to it you are appropriately compensated for your time. We won’t turn away talent over something that small, and we can find a use for your skills without a doubt.”
He pauses, crossing his arms. When he speaks again his voice has a newly hardened edge.
“If, however, you see this message as a signal of weakness on Markov’s part, a sign that the authorities are preoccupied at the moment, I want to assure you that belief is mistaken. If you see this catastrophe as an opportunity to be taken advantage of, know that I personally see to it you get what you deserve.”
He places his arms behind his back, a bit of self-confidence leaking into his professionalism.
“Markov survived the End itself. We’ll do it again if we have to.”
