As the rest of the Teen Spirit detachment proliferated and found bunks to relax in, Elise made a b-line for a commanding officer and demanded to know where the captive general was being held. From there she had been directed to Azula, who outwardly seemed to be having the time of her life.

“So pugnacious, Elise! The General has been secured within our walls. I’ll be happy to arrange an appointment, but surely there’s time for us girls to get caught up?” Azula said, conjuring her most matronly venom.

“Actually, now that you mention it…” Elise snapped, taking a step forward, “...no. I need to see him.”

“She needs to see him? My my...if I didn’t know better I’d say someone sounded attached.” Azula sighed. She barely suppressed a vicious grin, which was entirely intentional. Games upon games upon games. The two held an electric stare for a moment.

“Oh, very well. This way…” the Queen beckoned. The gates of Fort Briggs yawned before them, and the monolithic, dark steel structure soon shrouded them in the orange half-light of humming sulfur lamps.

As they entered the detention complex, Elise immediately felt Strazio’s fitful, restless soul flickering at the far end of the hallway. Her pace quickened, and she half jogged up to the cell where the leering, ragged man was being kept. The grand irony was, of course, was that he was still in better shape than when she had pushed him into this whole mess.

Strazio’s head tilted slightly in recognition of the vampire, but his stubborn scowl remained. It took everything in her power not to blurt out the word ‘Dad!’ the second she made eye contact with the guy. Because Strazio wasn’t her dad. There was something else about him that compelled this attachment...but that didn’t make it feel any less urgent. Elise hefted her medical kit and shot a look over at the jailer; some squirrely little mercenary girl with a blindfold.

“Open the cell. I’ll tend to his wounds, and you will remove his restraints.” Elise said flatly. The blindfold scoffed.

“Like hell? I don’t take orders from you, and I’m not about to let this punk get his hands free.” Stheno scoffed. Elise maintained her smoldering, crimson glare.

“I seen this man disintegrate people with his mind. His hands are the least of your troubles, and the fact none of you are powdered idiot right now shows me that he gonna be civil.” Elise said. Her voice steadily increased in tone, and her body was visibly shaking. When Stheno didn’t budge, her next words came with a fanged grimace.

“Uncuff. Him.” Elise seethed. Azula, who had approached at a more leisurely pace befitting her station, paced up to the cell door with feline satisfaction. Stheno glanced up at her General, who nodded in turn.

“Sure thing, but don’t mind if I draw my weapon.” the gorgon said flatly. She rattled a set of brass keys in the lock in one hand, while cocking her sidearm in the other. Strazio kept his eyes locked on the mercenary as she and Elise entered the room. Stheno passed the the correct key to Elise, who slowly undid the iron clasps holding Strazio’s hands and feet.

The albino kept his eyes glued on Stheno, who kept the pistol trained right between his eyes. She backed slowly out of the cell, and closed the door behind her. Strazio rubbed the raw skin around his wrists for a moment as Elise began to unpack her medicine bag. Then, with a lightning, feral movement, the magus stood up and smashed his fist into Elise’s chin.

The clamor of voices and threats became deafening for a moment before Stheno shouted the enemy general back into his chair. He held his hands up with a wickedly pleased grin on his face.

“So much for civil!” Stheno spat.

Azula was cackling openly.

Elise dabbed a bit of blood off of her lip and sighed.

“Nah...nah, I was expecting that.” she said with partially slurred resignation. She paused before approaching Strazio with a few gauze pads and bandages.

“You get it out of ya system? I’m tryna do you a solid.” she said flatly. Strazio resumed his petulant silence. Whatever. Elise set about mending and salving the worst of his injuries as Azula took the chance to pounce.

“You two seem to have quite the history! I had heard about Mirage and Wraith. Who knew there was another couple separated by battle lines?” Azula half sang.

“Not like that. It’s my fault he’s in this stupid death game. I promised to keep him alive.” Elise murmured. It wasn’t the whole truth, but hanging out with vampires had taught Elise to recognize when she was being analyzed. Azula was looking for collateral to keep her on a leash. Conversely, the Queen knew when someone was holding out on her.

“That sounds like a story in and of itself…” Azula prodded. She turned to address Strazio. “...care to elaborate? I’d hate to think that our resident vampire would do something treacherous to uphold a hastily made pact.”

Ah. There it was. Elise stood up and rounded on Azula with a firm, dark sneer.
“Careful princess. Easy to act big when you’ve got a thousand fools at your command. Back in the Crossroads? I ain’t ever heard of ya. Think about what comes after all this.”

Everyone present knew instantly that a critical hit had been landed. Azula hummed with laughter, but it was audibly just a bit unhinged. Elise made a point of doubling down on her rebuttal before Azula could devise a riposte.

“If I hear about any more harm coming to Strazio, I’ll collect your blood and write ‘has been’ on the jar. Those are my terms.” Elise hissed. She let a silent moment spend itself.

“Past that...I’m interested in ending this game as quickly as possible. If you have any big ideas for that, I’m down...”

Withering Fire!

They had left the Fortress hours ago, and even with the nighttime on their side, the mortar shells found parts of their lines. Not a grotesque bombardment, but it still came as a shock to the column of soldiers, who momentarily fled from the routes and into the surrounding forests.

"The Burning Legion" has suffered 25 fatalities

"Son of a bitch," a sergeant shouted as fresh mortars rained down on the Burning Legion.

"The Burning Legion" has suffered 30 casualties from withering fire.
"This Sick Beat" has suffered 10 causalities from withering fire.
"PepsiCo" has suffered 5 causalities from withering fire.

"The Burning Legion" Morale has degraded.

Azula/her lieutenants might start to hear whispers from the soldiers that a few of them are 'already getting tired of this shit'. What that might mean, in specific, is unknown.

The goings did NOT get easier for the army as it pressed forward.

Quite the opposite, but they found themselves under fire from multiple angles.

"The (Super) Burning Legion" suffers 160 casualties from withering fire.

“Bastards…” Stheno growled as she made a break for it, charging after her commander alongside the most loyal soldiers of their army. Even under the rain of enemy fire, the mercenary didn’t cower or fear for her life. All she could focus on was how infuriating the entire situation was, on how the snivelling children that dared to call themselves soldier had double-crossed the legion again and again. She couldn’t stand it!

“Cowards… TRAITORS! I don’t care if I have to claw my way outta Hell itself! I’ll come for you!” She snarled furiously at her foes as the gradually disappeared from view. During her rant, her zigzagging movement faltered just for a moment and a shot grazed her, painful but not enough to noticeably slow her pace. Of course they had to have the last word. There would be hell to pay if she got her hands on any of the turncoats who sold them over to the blond bastard. Around her, of the soldiers began to slow down as soon as they were sure that they were safe from enemy fire, their sudden sprint after their march on the vault knocking the wind out of them, but the super soldier’s drive to make sure Azula was alive and relatively well wouldn’t let her stop.

“Commander!” She called. “Azula! It’s me!”

When there was no immediate response, the gorgon feared the worst, but soon enough she heard a harsh cough followed by the voice of her superior. “Stheno… over here.”

Nervously, the warrior pushed through the undergrowth to find the fire princess. She had definitely seen better days, crouching in a jungle and clutching her wounded shoulder was no one’s idea of a good time, but the fire in her eyes hadn’t died out just yet. “What’s the situation?”

Letting out a sigh of relief, the berserker raised herself up so she was standing to attention. “I haven’t counted exactly, but not many of us followed after you, and even fewer made it.”

“Perfect…” The princess snarled, clenching her free fist as best as she could. Even at a glance, Stheno could tell that the two women were equally as furious about the scenario that they had been plunged into.

“Look on the bright side. We’ve got you and me. I’d say we’re worth about an army.” She said, doing her best to force a positive demeanor. Azula simply shook her head at that, but a slight smile crossed her lips nonetheless. “Genuinely, though, whatever plans you’ve got in mind, I’ll see them through. You can count on me, Commander.”
