Catrina blinked at the scaled beast sniffing at her scalp. Only a few moments ago, hadn't it been? Since she had collapsed into a pile of soft blankets for a good night's sleep, surrounded by the warmth of her best friend's fiery warmth. What, then, was this scalding summer sunlight and the salamander-esque creature?

Cat sat up slowly, heel of her palm pressed against her aching head. Drugs? No, she hadn't ingested anything strange. Magic? Probably not, she would have been alerted well before anyone got close enough. There was only one other option. Headache? Check. Slightly nauseated? Check. Strange environment with strange creatures? Double check. Undeniably, this is exactly what Jackal called 'falling through time'. A scaly nose invaded her personal bubble and she gently pushed it back. The whispering hum of the lizard's thoughts intruded as the nose returned, and Cat flopped backwards to escape it.

"Are you food?"

"Of course not." Catrina giggled as the lizard poked it's nose into her stomach. She tilted her head to look at the lizard, to really see the large creature. She paused at the leather harness wrapped about its neck.

"You.. have a friend?"

The lizard, much to the chagrin of the rider, tipped forward to lie with his head across her torso, startling a new giggle from her lips.

"Alright, Alright. I admit, you are very cute. You're a very sweet lizard."

The rider shuffled free of the harness and saddle, trying to force the lizard back into submission. When that failed, the attempt foiled by Catrina's doting affection, the rider turned his aggression towards her. Angry yelling in a language she didn't understand interrupted her cheerful pampering of the giant lizard, who was more than happy to lie there being pampered until the man pulled out a knife. A bad idea, considering that only a moment ago the lizard had expressed interest in eating a person. His jaws snapped with a sudden and forceful bite, snapping the blade in half and injuring the man's hand in the process. From the way the beast loomed above her, and the way the rider had crumpled, Catrina almost thought the beast had taken a few fingers with it.

"You um, you really shouldn't take a new precious item from a dragon. Or any dragon-esque species. They get especially defensive."

The man started yelling again, although it sounded much more like a long string of cussing.

"Well that's rude. Is he always like this?" Catrina turned her focus to the lizard above her, and the buckle of the saddle. One by one, she detached the leather straps from the lizard's underbelly as she spoke with it. No doubt it was making the rider even angrier, but the lizard wouldn't let him hurt her. Thiago was a very good boy.

"Kensi is a hunter. But not good at hunting. I do most of the work."

Cat wriggled out from under the lizard's belly, grinning at the fuming hunter. "Well I guess he'll have to learn how to be nice to you, won't he?" Catrina gave the saddle a good strong yank, pulling it off of Thiago's back. Kensi gave them a defeated look, shoulders slouching. Catrina, having yanked too hard on the leather that was much lighter than it appeared, fell backwards with an 'oomph' and another round of giggling. Thiago stretched out in the sun, the threat Kensi posed to his newfound treasure abated, and sunk himself deep into the sand. Only the lizard's nose could be seen, and the twitching tail caused a constant ripple in the sands.

"You need to pay more attention though, if you don't let them burrow it could cause worse problems down the road. You know, mites, scale rot. This is your lizard is your friend, right Kensi?"

The hunter sputtered, taking a step back in surprise before redirecting it into a new resurgence of rage. Cat didn't understand most of it, but she gathered a few to be curses along the line of 'bitch' or maybe just 'asshole'.

"Very creative. I guess you can't understand me, huh?" Catrina crossed the short distance to Kensi's side, pulling a handkerchief out of her pocket. She gave him her brightest smile to ease his chaotic emotions and lifted his hand to examine it. The lizard's teeth had grazed across the flesh in several places, but hadn't cut into any major blood vessels so it red seeped slowly between the layers of cloth and leather of Kensi's makeshift glove. "Just hold still, you'll get infected if you leave these rags on."

The strips of cloth were carefully peeled away; the dust and dirt falling off in small cloud puffs. She did her best to make sure it all stayed out of the wound, but she could feel Kensi wince when it fell into the scrapes anyways. Cat patted gently where it was bleeding. Without anything to clean the wound there was no way to keep it clean of infections, but she did what she could. The man was oddly silent as Catrina wrapped the pale pink handkerchief around his hand; watching her near motionlessly. The damsel smiled up at him with her palm resting above the tiny knot, and the soft look he gave her in return carried all the affection that Thiago had been displaying. Cat blushed a little as she stepped back, looking away to hide her embarrassment.

"Of course he thinks I'm some damsel in distress." Catrina muttered to herself as she pulled the saddle back to where Thiago had buried himself. "If one charm still works both of them ought to."

"It is not time to go yet. Sand is warm. Take sleep." Thiago's protests, although cute, didn't stop him from crawling out of the sands. Kensi took over from her, gently pushing Catrina to the side as he flung the saddle overtop of the lizard's back with practiced ease. The Damsel stroked Thiago's nose with gentle affection as she waited for Kensi to finish retying all the straps. He gave her no warning when he finished the task, opting instead to lift her as though she weighed nothing and toss her onto the front of the saddle. Before she could even protest, he had swung up behind her and nudged Thiago into a hurried pace.
