What is this thread for?
This thread is for getting NPCs (non-player characters) approved by the staff. Just make a post with your NPC’s name, the canon they are from, and why you want that particular NPC/what you’re gonna do with them.
In addition, this thread is for requesting the use of already existing NPCs. If you’re planning to use an NPC listed on the Wiki, post here to request approval to write them. For major faction figureheads and Arbiters, please send your post featuring them to a staff member for approval before posting. You may also request that a staff member write as a major site NPC for you, if you would prefer that.
Reminders when submitting NPCs:
1) If you try to reserve too many big-name characters, you are likely not to be approved.
2) Please don't submit any real-life people.
When does an NPC need approval?
An NPC needs approval if they are a named character and/or a character with an important role from a CANON source. For example, Mario from the popular Nintendo franchise would require approval, as would Amy Rose from Sonic the Hedgehog. Original characters (OCs) do not require approval.
You may use any character you like for NPCs, within reason, and may be asked to alter something in the rare case staff thinks someone is abusing this NPC freedom. If a user’s personal NPC is not in use at the moment, another user may write them, with permission from the NPC’s creator. For this reason, NPCs do not get their own account; you write them with your PC account, and any Essence gain received goes toward your PC.
What is the difference between an NPC and a Summon?
A Summon is an ability meant to assist your character. Summons may assist your main character in combat and actively benefit them in player versus player (PVP) interactions. NPCs, on the other hand, are not abilities-- you should essentially consider them as totally new characters. NPCs are independent from your main character for the most part, and while they can assist your character in your personal or player versus environment (PVE) stories, they will not benefit your character in PVP situations.
If you are taking a canon character as a Summon, you might want to also post them in NPC Approval. This will prevent anyone else from accidentally taking that character as an NPC or Summon.
Can I enter my NPC in a site event?
Yes, just ensure that they are approved prior to the event. Also, it depends on if the event runner allows NPCs to enter their event. This varies from event to event, so be sure to ask!
Keep in mind that your main character (as in, the character your account is named after) will not automatically receive any Relics, Trinkets, or other Loot that your NPC might win during a site event. These rewards belong to your NPC once the event concludes. But, your NPC may seek out your player character and trade Coin/Trinkets/Loot to them, with the exception of Relics, which bind to your NPC until death. You cannot have your player character kill off your NPC and acquire the Relic that way.
The only thing your main character will automatically receive from your NPC’s participation in a site event will be the Essence gained from posting and, possibly, a participation bonus.
Can my NPC gain Influence for my faction?
Unless that NPC is the leader of said faction, then no. You cannot use your NPC to gain Influence for your faction without your main account character's active participation. Otherwise, your NPC's Influence belongs to that character and them alone.
What is the difference between a public NPC and a personal NPC?
A personal NPC is a character you get approved here, but you don’t want to share them with anyone else. This character is essentially only for your use and only appears in threads you want them to be in.
A public NPC is a character you get approved here, but other players can use them when you’re not writing them. For a public NPC, you will need to create a Wiki Article for them and submit it using the Wiki Submission form.
We’d like to encourage everyone to make their NPCs public when not in use. This is the best way to add flavor to the world. Instead of everyone just writing about their own anonymous bartender, it would be great if we can all use the same minor characters when we pass through the same locations!
What happens when someone joins as the same character as one of my personal NPCs?
You have several choices if this happens. One option is that you could simply retire your NPC if you feel uncomfortable writing the same character as someone else. Or, you could continue writing your NPC but call them an “alternate” version of said character. Whether or not they ever interact is totally up to you and the other writer.
