Overview/Notable Features (top)

From the orbit of Opealon, the entire planet looks eerily Earth-like. However, as you enter the planet’s atmosphere you can see clearly that the lush green trees and plentiful lakes are attached to islands that are floating of the planet’s surface, giving only the illusion of traditional continents.
Wildlife has adapted to this type of terrain and most of the animals that live in this habitat tend to be lightweight, flying creatures. The islands, since time immemorial, have always floated through some somewhat mysterious means. In recent generations, civilizations have managed to weave intricate machines that enhance the altitude of these floating landmarks. These developments have allowed for an even more dramatic divide between the World's two principle cultures.

The people that live on these platforms tend to be extremely wealthy as the natural fruits and wildlife are delicacies among other planets. These ‘islanders’ or 'Skylanders' see themselves as the rightful heirs to Opealon and will look down on any of the other natives or even tourists. They tend to be religiously fanatic about their technology and view anyone who relies on magic or distances themselves from technology to be a lesser being. They will persecute anyone that judges their lifestyle.

Below these beautiful islands is nothing but a large ocean. These waters are quite perilous due to the rough waters, predatory sea monsters, and the threat of pirates. The wildlife in the ocean fits the phrase “Eat or be eaten” as nearly all of the creatures prey on other wildlife. The people down here, often labeled 'seafarers' by themselves and others, are descendants of outcasts from the islands above and tend to live in extreme squalor. Since there is no land, the people live in boat communities or moving, wooden harbors. Their main source of income is exporting the enormous amounts of water as well as other types of seafood. Due to this poverty, pirates are common and many ships fall prey to the sea’s cold clutches. People often use magic to aid them in their trails due to the expensive nature of ‘islander’ technology.'

The presence of the occasional thermal vent or underwater caverns seems to point toward even more unknowns about the world's history, as well as its ecosystem. Rumor has it that there is a civilization that has somehow thrived, beneath the treacherous deeps.

Terrain/Climate (top)

Opealon is a tropical world with lush forests on each of the islands and mossy vines dangling down into the oceans. Thick forests cover almost every island until civilization clears them away in the creation of their own oasis. Once inhabited, the undersides of these islands are often adorned with giant machines to hoist them further away from the ocean below: Windmills, solar panels, and giant propellers are a common site on 'advanced' islands. The oceans down below have various environments, ranging from a more calm and 'shallow' oceans that may be dotted with coral reefs to seemingly endless deep oceans that bear the tumultuous roar of constant waves. It is always humid in Opealon so the large ocean is usually appreciated.

While the islands that adorn the planet's skies often have some degree of control over the nearby climate thanks to technological savvy, the ocean below is rarely slave to anyone's will, regardless of their technology or foul magics. Rogue waves and vast hurricanes can form from seemingly blue skies, threatening even the most hardened of seafarers. Occasionally, underwater earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can have calamitous (albeit very very) effects on everyone's livelihood. If you intend to live the seafarers life, you should be prepared for every disastrous inevitability while on this endless sea.

Wildlife (top)

Opealon's floating islands, when not occupied by the lavish cities, have thick forests that are largely unoccupied by larger beasts. The occupants on the islands have systematically gotten rid of the more dangerous beasts, leaving more agile pests and insects to remain free. This means that only the most cultivated, aesthetically pleasing and useful species remain. This includes exotic birds, monkeys, sloths, and domesticated species that live in a carefully monitored balance.

In stark contrast, the ocean below is teeming with untamed and free-roaming sea life. In the more shallow regions of the ocean, plants thrive on the surface of the water. The kelp forests are full of shoal fish, octopi, reef sharks, and eels that usually aren't dangerous unless provoked. The deeper parts of the ocean are more dangerous, however, with many large sea life threats that attack anything that appears on the surface. These include megalodons, reaper leviathans, and even the dreaded kraken.

Faction Quests

“Something In The Water”
Quest Giver: City of Hope Government Official (but, like, maybe in back channels)
Quest Length: 5,000+ words
Quest Location: City of Hope + Nearby
Quest Prerequisites: Must not be Notorious or Hated by the City of Hope
Quest Description: The City of Hope does not like the world below. They don’t like anything about it -- the vagabonds and pirates, their reliance on primitive, arcane magicks, or their general lack of hygiene. Nothing. Not a single thing.

Well… except they do like one thing: the water.

The City provides its denizens with drinking water through a communal tap, but unbeknownst to most of its citizens, this water isn’t brought in from off-world but rather from a special sector of the Sea of Monsters down below. The journey to achieve it is treacherous -- Seafarers and beasts alike look to capsize any Skylander vessel that is caught outside the floating islands.

That’s where you come in. They need protection, and they need it discreetly, in order to keep their workers safe as they brave the treacherous waters of the seas below to achieve the precious aqua vitae that keeps their pompous citizenry happy and hydrated.

Quest Reward: Standard Coin Reward and +3 Influence with the City of Hope

Event Faction Quests

“Up from the Depths”
Quest Giver: City of Hope Government Official (but, like, maybe in back channels)
Quest Length: 5,000 words
Quest Location: Opealon, City of Hope
Quest Prerequisites: Must have completed “Something in the Water”
Quest Description: In the dead of night, there have been attacks on outlying settlements within the City of Hope’s sphere of influence. While survivors have been infrequent, those that have endured these raids have reported organized bands of ‘raving lunatics’ who wield terrible magics. They also report armored colossi that shudder the ground beneath them and sport projectile drills. Survivors speak of the kidnapping of children and the theft of technology.

At first, Comstock suspected some band of magick-infused pirates to be behind these raids, but after the attack on the City of Hope, it is now known that these raids are being committed by Andrew Ryan’s deep-sea lunatics.

As someone who has supported the City of Hope in the past, you are called upon once again to station yourself at one such vital outlying colony and be ready in the event that it is attacked by these forces. Learn what you can. The information may prove important to the Skylanders.

Quest Rewards: Standard Coin Reward, +1 Influence with the City of Hope, Bounty from Rapture, +1 Support for City of Hope

“The Sunken Sea”
Quest Giver: Captain Nemo or a proxy
Quest Length: 5,000 words
Quest Location: Kirden Wharf, City of Hope
Quest Prerequisites: Must not be Hated by the pirates of Opealon
Quest Description: For a long time, the worst thing that the ‘seafarers’ of Opealon had to deal with was the chaotic nature of the ocean World’s waters (and, occasionally, krakens and stuff). While the Skylanders are prone to the occasional armed spat with pirates, they rarely seek out and attack those who make their living in the waters beneath their glittering isles.

Now, a new threat has emerged that threatens the livelihood of anyone who lives on Opealon’s waters, whether they dwell within the City of Hope, live in an independent floating commune, or even if they’re simply a savvy crew of salty miscreants.

‘Rapture’ is the name for the forces that breach up from the oceans to destroy or enslave any pirate crews caught within the grasp of the underwater civilization’s grasp. Why would find yourself among the oceans of Opealon is of no concern. The only concern is whether or not you’ll help Captain Nemo to protect the innocents among the seafarers from a menacing force that seeks to destroy them.

If you’re willing, you’ll be assigned to the crew of a ship. Your role is simply to protect them in the event of an attack. Perhaps in the process, you’ll learn more about this underwater enemy.

Quest Rewards: Standard Coin Reward, +1 Influence with Kirden Wharf, Bounty from Rapture, +1 Support for Kirden Wharf

“Link in the Chain”
Quest Giver: Miscellaneous envoy from Ryan Industries
Quest Length: 5,000 words
Quest Location: Oceans of Opealon (Various)
Quest Prerequisites: Must not be Hated by the pirates of Opealon
Quest Description: In the dead of night, you find yourself stirred from your slumber by a smooth-talking man or woman dressed in pinstripes and gently smoking on some sort of nicotine-laced object. From beneath the shadows of their fedora, they tell you that you’ve been watched lately. Watched by their ‘boss’, a man named Andrew Ryan.

They carry a proposition from Ryan. He knows your talents (whatever they may be), and he wants you to join the Great Chain of Being that drives Rapture. He wants you to link up with a group of his employees and assist them in purging a nearby ‘den of parasites.’ You are offered compensation, naturally, and the possibility that you might even be invited to Rapture itself in the future.

What’s not to love about that?

OOC Note – You’re only going to get this quest if you’re the type of person who would accept money to murder, destroy, and/or be an accessory to kidnapping). If you’re not that type of person, you’re not going to ‘receive’ this quest prompt.

Quest Rewards: Standard Coin Reward, +1 Influence with Ryan Industries, Bounty from Skylanders or Seafarers (Pick your Poison), +1 Support for Rapture

Repeatable? Yes; This Quest may also be Chained (hyuck)

It is said that no one knows what lurks at the very abyssal depths of Opealon, but this is simply self-deception. The depths of their hearts know that only a yawning gulf of darkness awaits, and therein lives Darkseid. I will bring these fears forth, dredge them up from the bottom of their zeitgeist, and allow them to flood every ship that floats above the void.

Even now, my forces gather in pockets and cartels among the drifting currents. Not even the floating islands, so self-assuredly beyond reach, can escape Darkseid. It is here that the darkest minds of Opealon dwell, and they will hearken unto Darkseid when I call them to desecrate that which they thought they loved...

What more can be said of the wreckage of this planet. Perhaps my gambit cost me more than expected, but the very hearts of the Crossroads' most powerful forces have been shaken to the point of breaking.

The World of Opealon is saved, in the most trivial of ways. Nausicaa lies in ruins in the deep, the Skylanders quail in fear of their denial, and the very soul of a God has been shriven to the ways of despair. Darkseid is the cancer which takes deep root, and I intend to keep my grasp on the murmuring depths of this planet, no matter how safe they may temporarily feel.
