Unmaking Quest 3: Cultist Troubles / (Words 5k)
>> Part 1
It has been some time since the group had arrived in Erda Nona and by staying in the inn which has been packed due to the amount of individuals that were coming in from the other worlds. However, after doing some scouting around the town about the situation, Fei was dealing with an unexpected visitor who had dropped by his room, knocking on the door only to open it.
Said individual was someone that he never would have thought to see again, let alone for awhile.
“B-beta? What are you doing here?” Fei's eyes widened as he asked with surprise as Beta mused, ”Why to check on you of course after the both of you slipped out. I really owe the locals a thank you for tracking you down for me.”
While Fei was dealing with Beta, Saryuu would be returning from his latest roundabout around town and when he got past the noise of the crowd in the inn, he would be in the empty hallway and stopped when he heard what was going on in the distance. Was that..Beta?
He snuck to look around a corner and uh oh, this was trouble for sure and it was outside of Fei's room. The female standing in front of the greenette was definitely her! However, he wasn't going to take action, not yet that is.
“Slipped out? What?” Fei asked with furrowed brows before he would see the albino in the distance, lingering down the hallway of the inn. However, his facial expression was screaming of 'help' as he would signal out to the albino behind Beta.
Seeing that as a sign, the albino would walk over while he heard the accusation from Beta as he wasn't appreciative of what the agent is putting his friend through.
“Both me and Fei got sucked into a Parallel Stone rift and got dropped off here. Didn’t they tell you anything or are you just here to cause trouble for us?”
The bluette stopped before she turned around and noticed Saryuu incoming from behind her before she pointed to the albino. “Saryuu, there you are! I’ve been looking for you all around this town! You think you would get away so easily, did you?”
When Saryuu was close enough in terms of distance, he stopped, however, he didn’t move but his eyes lowered as he sighed, ”Beta, I’m not going to cause a ruckus or anything if that is what you are trying to imply. Though, if I was to guess, El Dorado probably sent you, didn’t they?”
“That is none of your concern! You two slipped out and now you two are coming back to me!”
Both boys looked at each other for a bit before the albino asked, ”And how are you going to do that?”
“I always have my way.” the female mused before Saryuu asked, ”Okay then, here’s a question. Could you contact El Dorado?”
“That’s easy.” Beta mused before she would hit the communicator to attempt to connect to the HQ but no luck, it was nothing but static. “H-huh? No signal? Odd, it was working earlier!”
“Yeah, I figured something was off. Too bad, it looks like you’re stranded with us.” Saryuu mused as Beta grumbled. “You really have no room to speak Evan.”
“Beta, calm down.” Fei reminded the bluette as he was trying to reduce tensions between the duo. “I’m sure there’s some way we can contact them eventually, we just don’t know how.”
Beta huffed as she glared at both of the boys in annoyance, eventually crossing her arms.
"Why the fuss?" Saryuu asked casually as the bluette replied, "You were supposed to be in the M.U.G.E.N. facility by now, that's why. You still have a sentence to serve for all the ruckus you caused back home."
Rolling his eyes, the albino shook his head and sighed. "Oh, I'm so sorry that things aren't what they are supposed to be. What should I do to make it up to you, m'lady?"
The taunting manner that he spoke in made Beta feel even more frustrated as she would be growling at Saryuu, almost tempted to attack but the thing was Fei would eventually step in between the two as he replied, "If it makes it any better, Saryuu has actually been making an effort with helping people out as of late."
Saryuu nodded as he added, ”More like we had been.”
“I don't believe it. Not one bit." Beta pouted before the albino asked, “Were you seriously focused on tracking down me and Fei and ignoring everything else?”
The bluette glared at Saryuu. “I have been paying attention to what has been going on, I’m not that shallow! Though for some reason, everything has been really busy.”
“That’s because we’re in the middle of a multi-world crisis situation going on here so of course people would be panicking. They’re coming from different planets and settling here because they want to get as far away from it as possible.” Saryuu explained as he crossed his arms while looking at the female before he continued with a friendlier yet sarcastic undertone. “Welcome to Erda Nona, Kingdom of Arcadia, or as you would come to know as part of the Crossroads.”
Beta didn’t like how Saryuu was so smug and instead of being annoyed, she took a moment to calm down for a bit.
“Now do we have an understanding of things?” he asked as Beta answered, ”Fine but let’s just hope for your sake that you’re not up to trouble again.”
“We really don’t have time for this..” Saryuu sighed before he would take Fei along and go to his room while Beta was left behind before the door was shut. She was left out in the hallway and on her own as she was looking for a way to get her communicator working but it wasn't any use as she sighed.
She really hopes that she can get into contact with the Chairman somehow..
However, while in the room..
Saryuu asked, “How long ago did she arrive?”
“Last I checked, it was several minutes ago. Why?”
“What did she ask?”
“Saryuu, she was just looking for us.”
“Yeah and bring us back to El Dorado when all we have been doing is helping people out. She’s still as stubborn as she is and it wasn’t our fault we ended up here in the first place.”
“Well, at least she doesn’t know about anything else besides that.” Fei sighed. “Though, I really hope that she doesn’t find out about what’s been really going on.”
“Sooner or later she will. She’s a stickler for details.”
Saryuu’s expression calmed, ”Anyways, anything else happened while I was out?”
“I’ve checked around the inn and have been contacted by a strange person that there are rumors of something like a cult lingering around here. I don’t exactly know why or who but they say that they’re outside Arcadia somewhere but that may have something to do with this Darkseid situation. People had been disappearing as of late so it would make some ounce of a hint or so.”
Saryuu took a moment to think about what Fei was talking about; however, there would be a knock on the door and the greenette would answer it.
“Hey, I couldn’t help but to wonder, who’s Darkseid?” the blunette asked as the greenette asked, “You were eavesdropping on us, were you?”
Saryuu looked at the door for a moment before he would walk to open the door to see Beta smiling.
The albino sighed, “Look, Beta, none of this concerns you.”
“Are you sure about that?” The bluette would lean in slightly.
Saryuu rolled his eyes. “Yes, I’m sure. This is only between me and Fei to handle.”
“Actually, she’s now as involved in this as we are.” Fei reminded. “She’s stranded, remember?”
Saryuu really wished Fei didn't remind him but regardless, he sighed, "Oh, I love it when you're right."
“I knew I can count on you Fei!” Beta mused as she would come into the room with the others. “Anyways, with that aside, so what is this Darkseid? What are they?”
“It’s a long story.” Fei sighed as he would shut the door for Beta even if he could tell that Saryuu wasn’t exactly favorable towards her. “Remember about the multi-world crisis we talked about earlier?”
“Yes, I remember.” the bluette nodded. “What of it?”
“Well, there is the fact that there is a Fallen Arbiter that is called Darkseid that wants to Unmake everything and as both me and Saryuu know, Govermorne was the first to fall.” he explained before he continued, ”The thing is that with each world, there is an Arbiter involved with it and what we have to do is to fight back against the Corruption so it can help the Arbiter out from being Unmade.”
Eventually, he would bring out a holographic feed of what Saryuu showed him from the communicator to show off the images of the devastation of Cevanti, which caused Beta’s eyes to widen from the devastation.
Dark skies, absolute destruction of property, weird demon-like creatures around and everything else. Additionally, it was an odd sense of dejavu as it was a total warzone situation that had unfolded right before her.
“What are even those creatures?” she would ask as she pointed to one of the monsters on screen.
“Those monsters are the monsters that pop out the more that a world is corrupted.” explained Saryuu. “Corruption taints everything it touches and that’s why we have to eliminate the source by all means as everyone is fighting for their lives in this crisis.”
“Yea, there’s been news that there was a massive siege on Markov awhile ago and it has suffered immensely.” Fei spoke up. “The people had been talking about it for a while.”
“So that’s what it is..” Saryuu wondered for a bit as he remembered about the electrokinetic that he saw in his vision.
In fact, he wondered if they were involved in pushing back the attack as well given that he was interested to meet them in person after all.
“However, since that happened, there has been an update on the status of the city as it has been cleaned up. Though there’s been murmurs for a massive counterattack against the Fade and they are gaining reinforcements.”
"Makes sense." Saryuu nodded as he was thinking. “They have to protect the city after all.”
The truth is that he has someone to meet there but he wasn’t going to tell Beta about them as he doesn’t exactly trust her. Perhaps Fei and her can spend time together but at the same time, Fei knows Beta personally better than he does.
Fei nodded though, for some reason, he can’t help but to feel like Saryuu is up to something especially when he could feel a shift indicating it.
While the duo were explaining, Beta was taking her time to take in all the new information that Fei has given her and to be honest, with Saryuu making it up, she was skeptical as she was wondering. Yes, while she was in denial about what was going on, perhaps this sort of situation would be a good test for the two boys to see where they really stand.
However, she wasn’t as concerned about Fei, it was Saryuu that she was looking out for.
“Anyways, besides what is going on, how long have you been here?” Beta’s tone was generally curious even if the boys were busy in the background.
“Awhile.”
“We’ve kinda lost track of time since we arrived here.”
“The city is actually nice. There’s alot of things I haven’t seen around.”
“We were just as surprised as you were, Beta.” Fei mused before he nodded. “Arcadia has a lot going on for it but there’s other places around as well.”
Beta was wondering for a bit and it wouldn’t be long before she asked, “I’d like to see how the other places are when things aren’t as crazy. Though, I have to wonder.. How have you two been feeling since you have the vaccine?”
Fei perked up as he was nervous before Saryuu replied, “We had been doing well for ourselves.“
Beta’s eyes narrowed as she noticed Fei’s uneasiness and asked, “Are you sure?”
“Why wouldn’t we be? Right, Fei?” Saryuu asked as Fei nervously smiled. “Y-yeah. Right.”
Something wasn’t right about this as Beta has suspected something off in general. However, she wasn’t going to question further as she has caused more than enough for these two.
In fact, she would have to wait and see. If they won't tell her anything, she might as well keep a close eye on these two even as they would be doing 'time' in the background, much akin to how a warden would watch over a prisoner as that was the type of given authority she had when she worked with El Dorado.
To be continued in Part 2..
