Unmaking Quest 3: Cultist Troubles / (Words 5k)
>> Part 1

It has been some time since the group had arrived in Erda Nona and by staying in the inn which has been packed due to the amount of individuals that were coming in from the other worlds. However, after doing some scouting around the town about the situation, Fei was dealing with an unexpected visitor who had dropped by his room, knocking on the door only to open it.

Said individual was someone that he never would have thought to see again, let alone for awhile.

“B-beta? What are you doing here?” Fei's eyes widened as he asked with surprise as Beta mused, ”Why to check on you of course after the both of you slipped out. I really owe the locals a thank you for tracking you down for me.”

While Fei was dealing with Beta, Saryuu would be returning from his latest roundabout around town and when he got past the noise of the crowd in the inn, he would be in the empty hallway and stopped when he heard what was going on in the distance. Was that..Beta?

He snuck to look around a corner and uh oh, this was trouble for sure and it was outside of Fei's room. The female standing in front of the greenette was definitely her! However, he wasn't going to take action, not yet that is.

“Slipped out? What?” Fei asked with furrowed brows before he would see the albino in the distance, lingering down the hallway of the inn. However, his facial expression was screaming of 'help' as he would signal out to the albino behind Beta.

Seeing that as a sign, the albino would walk over while he heard the accusation from Beta as he wasn't appreciative of what the agent is putting his friend through.

“Both me and Fei got sucked into a Parallel Stone rift and got dropped off here. Didn’t they tell you anything or are you just here to cause trouble for us?”

The bluette stopped before she turned around and noticed Saryuu incoming from behind her before she pointed to the albino. “Saryuu, there you are! I’ve been looking for you all around this town! You think you would get away so easily, did you?”

When Saryuu was close enough in terms of distance, he stopped, however, he didn’t move but his eyes lowered as he sighed, ”Beta, I’m not going to cause a ruckus or anything if that is what you are trying to imply. Though, if I was to guess, El Dorado probably sent you, didn’t they?”

“That is none of your concern! You two slipped out and now you two are coming back to me!”

Both boys looked at each other for a bit before the albino asked, ”And how are you going to do that?”

“I always have my way.” the female mused before Saryuu asked, ”Okay then, here’s a question. Could you contact El Dorado?”

“That’s easy.” Beta mused before she would hit the communicator to attempt to connect to the HQ but no luck, it was nothing but static. “H-huh? No signal? Odd, it was working earlier!”

“Yeah, I figured something was off. Too bad, it looks like you’re stranded with us.” Saryuu mused as Beta grumbled. “You really have no room to speak Evan.”

“Beta, calm down.” Fei reminded the bluette as he was trying to reduce tensions between the duo. “I’m sure there’s some way we can contact them eventually, we just don’t know how.”

Beta huffed as she glared at both of the boys in annoyance, eventually crossing her arms.

"Why the fuss?" Saryuu asked casually as the bluette replied, "You were supposed to be in the M.U.G.E.N. facility by now, that's why. You still have a sentence to serve for all the ruckus you caused back home."

Rolling his eyes, the albino shook his head and sighed. "Oh, I'm so sorry that things aren't what they are supposed to be. What should I do to make it up to you, m'lady?"

The taunting manner that he spoke in made Beta feel even more frustrated as she would be growling at Saryuu, almost tempted to attack but the thing was Fei would eventually step in between the two as he replied, "If it makes it any better, Saryuu has actually been making an effort with helping people out as of late."

Saryuu nodded as he added, ”More like we had been.”

“I don't believe it. Not one bit." Beta pouted before the albino asked, “Were you seriously focused on tracking down me and Fei and ignoring everything else?”

The bluette glared at Saryuu. “I have been paying attention to what has been going on, I’m not that shallow! Though for some reason, everything has been really busy.”

“That’s because we’re in the middle of a multi-world crisis situation going on here so of course people would be panicking. They’re coming from different planets and settling here because they want to get as far away from it as possible.” Saryuu explained as he crossed his arms while looking at the female before he continued with a friendlier yet sarcastic undertone. “Welcome to Erda Nona, Kingdom of Arcadia, or as you would come to know as part of the Crossroads.”

Beta didn’t like how Saryuu was so smug and instead of being annoyed, she took a moment to calm down for a bit.

“Now do we have an understanding of things?” he asked as Beta answered, ”Fine but let’s just hope for your sake that you’re not up to trouble again.”

“We really don’t have time for this..” Saryuu sighed before he would take Fei along and go to his room while Beta was left behind before the door was shut. She was left out in the hallway and on her own as she was looking for a way to get her communicator working but it wasn't any use as she sighed.

She really hopes that she can get into contact with the Chairman somehow..

However, while in the room..

Saryuu asked, “How long ago did she arrive?”

“Last I checked, it was several minutes ago. Why?”

“What did she ask?”

“Saryuu, she was just looking for us.”

“Yeah and bring us back to El Dorado when all we have been doing is helping people out. She’s still as stubborn as she is and it wasn’t our fault we ended up here in the first place.”

“Well, at least she doesn’t know about anything else besides that.” Fei sighed. “Though, I really hope that she doesn’t find out about what’s been really going on.”

“Sooner or later she will. She’s a stickler for details.”

Saryuu’s expression calmed, ”Anyways, anything else happened while I was out?”

“I’ve checked around the inn and have been contacted by a strange person that there are rumors of something like a cult lingering around here. I don’t exactly know why or who but they say that they’re outside Arcadia somewhere but that may have something to do with this Darkseid situation. People had been disappearing as of late so it would make some ounce of a hint or so.”

Saryuu took a moment to think about what Fei was talking about; however, there would be a knock on the door and the greenette would answer it.

“Hey, I couldn’t help but to wonder, who’s Darkseid?” the blunette asked as the greenette asked, “You were eavesdropping on us, were you?”

Saryuu looked at the door for a moment before he would walk to open the door to see Beta smiling.

The albino sighed, “Look, Beta, none of this concerns you.”

“Are you sure about that?” The bluette would lean in slightly.

Saryuu rolled his eyes. “Yes, I’m sure. This is only between me and Fei to handle.”

“Actually, she’s now as involved in this as we are.” Fei reminded. “She’s stranded, remember?”

Saryuu really wished Fei didn't remind him but regardless, he sighed, "Oh, I love it when you're right."

“I knew I can count on you Fei!” Beta mused as she would come into the room with the others. “Anyways, with that aside, so what is this Darkseid? What are they?”

“It’s a long story.” Fei sighed as he would shut the door for Beta even if he could tell that Saryuu wasn’t exactly favorable towards her. “Remember about the multi-world crisis we talked about earlier?”

“Yes, I remember.” the bluette nodded. “What of it?”

“Well, there is the fact that there is a Fallen Arbiter that is called Darkseid that wants to Unmake everything and as both me and Saryuu know, Govermorne was the first to fall.” he explained before he continued, ”The thing is that with each world, there is an Arbiter involved with it and what we have to do is to fight back against the Corruption so it can help the Arbiter out from being Unmade.”

Eventually, he would bring out a holographic feed of what Saryuu showed him from the communicator to show off the images of the devastation of Cevanti, which caused Beta’s eyes to widen from the devastation.

Dark skies, absolute destruction of property, weird demon-like creatures around and everything else. Additionally, it was an odd sense of dejavu as it was a total warzone situation that had unfolded right before her.

“What are even those creatures?” she would ask as she pointed to one of the monsters on screen.

“Those monsters are the monsters that pop out the more that a world is corrupted.” explained Saryuu. “Corruption taints everything it touches and that’s why we have to eliminate the source by all means as everyone is fighting for their lives in this crisis.”

“Yea, there’s been news that there was a massive siege on Markov awhile ago and it has suffered immensely.” Fei spoke up. “The people had been talking about it for a while.”

“So that’s what it is..” Saryuu wondered for a bit as he remembered about the electrokinetic that he saw in his vision.

In fact, he wondered if they were involved in pushing back the attack as well given that he was interested to meet them in person after all.

“However, since that happened, there has been an update on the status of the city as it has been cleaned up. Though there’s been murmurs for a massive counterattack against the Fade and they are gaining reinforcements.”

"Makes sense." Saryuu nodded as he was thinking. “They have to protect the city after all.”

The truth is that he has someone to meet there but he wasn’t going to tell Beta about them as he doesn’t exactly trust her. Perhaps Fei and her can spend time together but at the same time, Fei knows Beta personally better than he does.

Fei nodded though, for some reason, he can’t help but to feel like Saryuu is up to something especially when he could feel a shift indicating it.

While the duo were explaining, Beta was taking her time to take in all the new information that Fei has given her and to be honest, with Saryuu making it up, she was skeptical as she was wondering. Yes, while she was in denial about what was going on, perhaps this sort of situation would be a good test for the two boys to see where they really stand.

However, she wasn’t as concerned about Fei, it was Saryuu that she was looking out for.

“Anyways, besides what is going on, how long have you been here?” Beta’s tone was generally curious even if the boys were busy in the background.

“Awhile.”

“We’ve kinda lost track of time since we arrived here.”

“The city is actually nice. There’s alot of things I haven’t seen around.”

“We were just as surprised as you were, Beta.” Fei mused before he nodded. “Arcadia has a lot going on for it but there’s other places around as well.”

Beta was wondering for a bit and it wouldn’t be long before she asked, “I’d like to see how the other places are when things aren’t as crazy. Though, I have to wonder.. How have you two been feeling since you have the vaccine?”

Fei perked up as he was nervous before Saryuu replied, “We had been doing well for ourselves.“

Beta’s eyes narrowed as she noticed Fei’s uneasiness and asked, “Are you sure?”

“Why wouldn’t we be? Right, Fei?” Saryuu asked as Fei nervously smiled. “Y-yeah. Right.”

Something wasn’t right about this as Beta has suspected something off in general. However, she wasn’t going to question further as she has caused more than enough for these two.

In fact, she would have to wait and see. If they won't tell her anything, she might as well keep a close eye on these two even as they would be doing 'time' in the background, much akin to how a warden would watch over a prisoner as that was the type of given authority she had when she worked with El Dorado.

Welcome to Part 2!

After getting adjusted as well as something to eat around the inn before heading out into the afternoon daylight, the trio would eventually go on their own ways as they scattered around the streets of the city to investigate this mysterious cult that had been made relevant as of late.

Beta would be at a cafe while Fei and Saryuu investigate at the marketplace as they were wandering around the streets of the kingdom, passing the various alignment of buildings from homes, stores, streetside vendors and other things. While Fei was looking around, Saryuu was using his telepathy passively to pick across the surface thoughts of varying individuals to see if there were any hint of abnormalities.

Even if Fei was investigating his surroundings, he was still thinking about what happened and didn't seem to be in a good mood about it as he was worried, causing Saryuu to look over with a concerned look.

However, as much as he would talk about it, he didn't. It would actually be better if he kept quiet but to reassure the greenette, the albino said, "Everything will work out."

"H-huh?"

Saryuu smiled softly at him before Fei smiled back, sighing, with his eyes lowered and nodded before he perked up.

"Saryuu?"

"Hmm?"

"I wonder if we would probably meet people that are like the others around here. I know that we had met Tenma before but other than that, I'm not sure."

The albino lifted his arms and placed them behind his head as he wondered. "I'm not sure either but then again, that's the fun part. We may not know until we see for ourselves, though, I can't help but to pity Beta in a sense."

"Do you think she would be okay?"

A shrug. "Yeah, I'm sure. We adjusted fine so far though I wonder how this would make an impact back home."

Fei thought for a moment about the situation as he would wonder before frowning a bit but he had to accept that and move on as he sighed and nodded even if he was feeling down.

"Can we talk about something else?"

Saryuu nodded.

"Thanks."

Fei's tone was calm even though the fact was that since Beta was here and unable to contact outside help did sort of disturbed him in a sense but Saryuu was trying to help him out. After a brief moment of silence, the greenette would be focused on the investigation at hand as they would be exploring.

"Do you think Beta has any luck with what's going on by now?" Saryuu asked as the greenette replied. "Maybe. Let me check."

Meanwhile, at the cafe...

Beta was exploring around the store side as there was a pleasant smell in the air among the area. The bluette may have had some hints of the city but not the full picture up until now as the fact that she only just met Saryuu and Fei as of recent. Of course, the inn and the locals were friendly so far but she has yet to encounter some troublemakers that would bring out her serious nature.

Walking around for awhile, she sighed as she said, "It's hard to look when you don't know where to start."

The fact was that she felt lost in the city and she was uncertain, however, atleast the innpeople were nice to help her out with finding out things.

As she would be walking about, she would hear a beep, which caused her to perk up and answer in. "Hello! I mean, yes sir?"

"Um, Beta, it's Fei, but, um, thanks?" Fei replied with a nervous tone.

The bluette's eye twitched as Beta was speechless for a moment as she heard Fei's voice on the other side of the communicator.

"Hello? Hello?"

A huff escaped from bluette as she crossed her arms. "I'm here. But wait, how did you-"

"Erm, I had some help? I guess?"

"That's still suspicious, however, atleast you're more tolerable than Saryuu over there."

"I heard that." the albino's voice would add into the discussion between the two.

"Evan, you keep out of it!" exclaimed the bluette as she was making somewhat of a scene as several patrons would be watching Beta while others would ignore her.

Watching from nearby, a woman in her twenties was sitting at a nearby table with another woman as she whispered to another. "What a drama queen."

Another nodded as she asked, "I know right? Plus, what is with her clothes?"

The first shrugged, "Beats me."

Darting her eyes as she heard some gossip, the bluette would walk away with her head held high as she would go to a more private place on the side of the store, leaning towards an alleyway of sorts.

"Alright Fei, what is going on here?”

“I was checking in to see if you had come across anyone suspicious over there yet.”

“No, not yet. I’m still looking, but how about you?”

“Sorry, nothing here yet either, however, how did Saryuu manage to get ahold of your communicator?”

“He has a communicator as well. It’s just-”

“Oh, okay. I-” The bluette nodded before she stopped. “Wait a minute, Saryuu doesn’t have a communicator.”

“He does, it’s just linked up with mine’s?”

Beta paused for a moment before her eyes narrowed a bit.

“Fei, is there something you should explain?”

“Nope, nope. Everything’s fine! Hey, something popped up so talk to you later Beta and good luck!”

With that, the communication ended as Beta had an annoyed glare, suspecting that they had been hiding something.

A sigh. “..I’m going to have to confront them about what’s going on when I can. Those two are holding back on me about something.”

Back to the Marketplace..

Saryuu was chuckling as Fei looked at the albino with an annoyed look. “That wasn’t funny, Saryuu. She could have suspected something there.”

“Easy there, it was only a tiny little prank.” the albino mused with a casual shrug before he lowered his arms. “Besides, it wasn’t that bad.”

The greenette shook his head as he continued, ”Anyways, we still got work to do with finding anything suspicious around here.”

A sigh.

“Just hope Beta isn’t too mad.”

“Relax Fei. Like I said, everything will be fine.” the albino smirked with a mischievous grin. “Just keep your head up.”

“Yeah but just until we can explain, try to keep a low profile while doing that, alright?”

Saryuu sighed, “Fine, fine. I’ll stop, but I have to admit, that was funny.”

The greenette shook his head and it wouldn’t be long before the two would set off to continue their search around the city.

Later that day..

The crowd of the city streets had since lightened up as the daytime crowds were easing away by the hour and while the greenette would be preoccupied at the marketplace, Saryuu went somewhere else away from Fei as he was looking in a different area.

While currently scouting around the city, he had approached the shady area of the town as he would come across some graffiti on the sides of a nearby alleyway where there was some strange symbol. Strange, but ominous as the graffiti was red where there were two lines with an arc being akin to an omega symbol along with wordings about the end and joining Darkseid.

Saryuu’s eyes narrowed while he was looking at the graffiti before he sighed, “If this doesn’t scream suspicious, I don’t know what else does.”

He paused to think for a bit as he turned his head and looked around to see more, investigating where it went as he would follow the trail.

Walking around, the silence of the alley was eerie in comparison to the early livelihood of the city’s streets and this would be where shady individuals lurk around. There were no guards or anything around so if someone were to pop in, the albino knew he was alone unless he called for backup.

Being around a place like this was no stranger to Saryuu, however brief reminiscing aside, it would be cut short as he heard chatter from nearby, causing him to perk up and hurry up. While keeping a low profile, he kept his distance as nearby, there would be two mysterious hooded individuals, purple with various markings that resembled said ominous omega symbols.

“What is the status of the plan?” asked the first with the second answer, “We should be ready by tonight.”

“Good. It’s about time we show the people of Erda Nona the error of their ways, especially this Kingdom and their weak ruler as well.”

A nod. “Indeed. However, we must be quick and depart immediately before one of the guards spots us.”

The second figure nodded before they would start leaving towards the east gate of the city, only to then briefly follow after them from a distance carefully before one of them stopped.

Fortunately, the albino was quick on his feet as he hid just as they turned around, causing the other to also stop.

“What is going on?”

“I’m not fully sure but something tells me we’re being followed.”

A pause as the first looked around and shook their head. “I don’t see anything, however, I am not going to waste my time. We have to finish preparations.”

“Of course, of course, however, you can go ahead. I’ll catch up later.”

A nod. “Very well. However, you are expected to arrive back on time so do not take long.”

Eventually, the two would split up and leave with the one lingering behind would be looking around in the alleyway and from Saryuu’s hiding spot, he could sense hostile thoughts from a distance and he had to play it safe.

With a confident smirk, he pulled the goggles over his eyes and would drop down on the ground behind the lingering stranger, which turned around.

“Aaah. I knew it! We were being followed.. Followed by a…child?” A pause. “Of all things, I never expected this.”

He perked up as he exclaimed, ”You, boy, explain yourself!”

“Well now.” Saryuu crossed his arms with a smirk. “I didn’t expect to find anyone here to be honest but I have to say, what exactly are you hiding?”

“If you expect me to tell you, you’re wrong. I’m not going to tell some potential interloper anything!”

“Oh, is that so?” the albino mused. “How unfortunate but I always know how to make people talk, one way or another. You’re in a position where I have an advantage over you.”

“In what way?”

“Why do you find out and see? After all, I'm just a mere child, right? Surely I can’t do anything about it.” he shrugged casually, “Put two in two together.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” The robed figure would eventually bring out a gun and pointed it at the albino. “Hold still so I can kill you!”

A weapon? That could be useful but regardless, he didn’t feel threatened about it while the other pulled a trigger to shoot. The bullet within was sent flying out as an audible sound of the gun echoed with a bang, causing anything nearby who heard the noise to run away from it or the opposite.

However, the attempt failed as Saryuu was unharmed..or so it seem as the bullet dropped from midair, it was because of his powers were protecting him.

“H-how? That should have done something!”

“Why are you asking me? I’m just a child!” Saryuu answered back, teasing the other as he was shrugging. “No really, you didn't expect this outcome, did you?”

He sighed, “Such a shame you decided that by using an outdated weapon, it would help you prove your innocence in this. Mmh, yeah, that makes a lot of sense.”

The robed individual was in trouble as Saryuu was in advantage. They really should had brought another as a backup and Darkseid had no room for incompetence that they feared that they would be subjected to judgment of the Arbiter for when he returns for the planet. Eventually, they would try again but the clicking sound from the weapon was heard, which meant one thing: no more ammo.

"D-damn! I'm out? I thought I had this thing loaded!" the other exclaimed as the albino shook his head, nearly facepalming before he lowered his arms to the sides. “What an unfortunate take. Oh well, too bad actually, but now, I want answers and you will give them to me regardless!”

He smirked. Of course, Saryuu knew exactly what to do within this very situation to flip the tables to his advantage.

Afterwhile, somewhere else within the city…

Fei was wandering around the streets, looking among the crowds going around, wondering for a bit of what was happening but at the same time, looking for clues. Unlike Saryuu, he didn’t have his usual powers but for some reason, he could sense some format of strange activity.

Hesitance was something he was battling with as a whole and even though he had overcome it before briefly for the sake of Tenma and the others, he wasn’t too sure now.

Despite of being quiet, he sighed as he shook his head. He had to stop with this and focus on what is important on the here and now.

After a few minutes, he would get a beep on his communicator as his call was from Saryuu.

“Fei?” he asked as the greenette answered, ”Saryuu? What’s going on?”

“I found out information on what is going on. Do you have Beta with you?”

The greenette shook his head. “No but I can contact her.”

“Alright and hey, I’ll stay off the line this time. Oh and besides that, we should all meet back at the inn and discuss it as soon as possible.” Saryuu continued as Fei nodded, “Alright. Talk to you soon.”

Eventually, Saryuu’s voice faded out as Fei would use the communicator to get into contact with Beta, who was over at the shopping district as she was on the lookout for anything suspicious.

“That darn Saryuu..wait until I-” she huffed with an annoyed tone before her communicator went off as a familiar voice was on the other line; it was Fei.

“Beta? Beta?”

Beta answered, “Yes Fei?”

“Saryuu has some new information about what’s going on and for us to meet back at the inn to discuss it.”

Beta’s eyes widened as she asked, “Hey, wait, since when Saryuu made himself the leader?”

“Beta, we really don’t have time for this.” Fei pleaded. "Just meet us back at the inn, alright?"

“Hmph, fine. Well, I’ll get back to the inn, see you shortly.” she replied before she stopped communication and made her way back to the inn.

She sighed. “If only we had things done my way, oh well. Anyways, duty does come first after all.”

Eventually, she would leave to meet Fei and Saryuu back to the inn but not without a certain Espurr following her back with her in the streets. The female’s arms were crossed behind her back as she was walking along and looking about the area.

This kingdom place was nice and pretty but wasn’t anything too advanced as it reminded her of the old days in the past back when she was time traveling to chase down various criminals and the likes.

However, she briefly shook her head and the sigh of these creatures were surreal as she never had seen them around before. They came in different shapes and sizes and she wonders how or why they’d get along with the people here. She did see some cute ones around after all and the more she walked, it was inching closer towards sunset judging by the position of the sun.

Well, atleast for one thing, it was clear and sunny when she came along because the fact was that it would be annoying if it was raining or anything like that.

However, it wouldn’t be long before the trio would meet back at the entrance of the inn and among the group, Beta was last to rejoin as Fei and Saryuu were already there at the front doors.

“A little slow there, aren’t you Beta?” Saryuu teased while Beta huffed, ”I was going fast enough thank you!”

The albino chuckled, “Whatever. I’m sure you were distracted while you were walking around.” Eventually, he looked off to the side and noticed the Espurr from behind her legs, “I see you got a follower.”

Beta perked up, looking around. “H-huh? Where?”

Saryuu pointed at the creature at Beta’s legs to which the bluette would take notice of. “Oh, well, hello there cutie.”

“Esp!” the Pokemon mused before the albino chuckled, “You know, that’s the same creature that has been following me around for a bit. I saw one follow me a while ago..”

The albino really wondered if it is the same Espurr since they sort of look the same and he knelt down to give the Pokemon a berry. “Here you go.”

“Esp!” The Pokemon took the berry out of his hands and started eating it right away causing him to chuckle. “A hungry little guy, aren't you?”
“Wait, where did you get that? Did you steal it?” Beta asked as the albino shook his head. “No, I was actually given that one.”

Beta narrowed her eyes but regardless, she would believe Saryuu just this once to avoid a situation before Fei would perk up.

“Hey, sorry about interrupting things but about our situation?” he asked as the albino perked up as he nervously replied, ”O-oh, yeah, nearly forgot. Anyways, it would be best if we went inside and strategize about what’s the next move on our end and figure it out before night comes.”

Fei knitted a brow at the statement and asked, “Night? But why?”

The albino petted the Espurr around its neck, which it loved, before the albino stood back up, "I'm sure it's to make sure nobody else would interfere because it would be too risky for anyone to come out and so they would cover their trails. Why do it in daytime when everyone's guards are lowered at nighttime?”

Afterwhile, the group would go into the inn but the Espurr, regardless, followed in with them as it didn’t want to be alone. It was really curious of what was going on and it wanted to see what the others were up to as well.
