Hey y’all!

I’m just reaching out to get some ideas from the memberbase on site events.

We’ve already been discussing a few in the dev forum but I’m intrigued by the answers to the following questions:

1. What attracts you to a site event?

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?

3. What deters you from a site event?

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?

And then some more specific questions that may be covered above but I feel are worth asking if not:

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?

Obviously - as a disclaimer - this isn’t a survey that’s going to help us create “the perfect site event” format that we can use over and over. There’s going to be events that risk death and those that don’t and events that offer rewards and those that don’t. This is mostly for me, and any other interested staffers/parties, to get an idea of where the member base stands for our own reference in discussion.

Feel free to post up your answers here — I’d prefer at this point for people to just submit their answers and limit discussion. Perhaps there’ll be a time for that later!

Thanks,
Jacob

1. What attracts you to a site event?

Playing in an immerse world, instead of a 'bubble' where the world outside doesn't seem to affect you; everyone ahs to deal with the dark data fallout, for example.

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?

Clout. Just like, a plot point that can be referenced between any characters. "Yeah, lost my ship when the aliens attacked."

3. What deters you from a site event?

IC motivation; my characters aren't usually the type to sign up for death tournaments like da.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?

Events tied to site lore directly. Or events that make new site lore, like how the duens got nuked.

And then some more specific questions that may be covered above but I feel are worth asking if not:

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?

Highly, I came here to rp. I can write Miss Frizzle fanfiction anywhere, and you get a lot more money and women on fanfiction.net

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?

All of it.

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?

It's really not about ooc motivation; the ooc motivation is fun. IC motivation is harder; threat of death combined with the lure of shiny objects is a guaranteed way to motivate 90% of characters imo.

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?
Whatever is clever, my dude

1. What attracts you to a site event?

I like the large-scale aspect of things.

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?

Fun! And also being part of an event in lore that has impact. A-Artifacts and Trinkets help though.

3. What deters you from a site event?

When it starts slowing down, trapping me in an event that doesn't move anymore, I go crazy. If something starts slowing down like that, I'd probably just leave...

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?

Story-driven sagas! The best part about these site events is that they can change the history of the site, and not just because we decided it happened, but because it happened naturally given how the actual people "living" in the site reacted. It's a natural development of plot.

And then some more specific questions that may be covered above but I feel are worth asking if not:

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?

That's... the point of these things. And yes, with large groups of players.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?

All of it, though it wouldn't be my first choice.

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?

I'm a sucker for getting new powers over anything else, so relics/trinkets.

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?

Co-runners, but only because I think that's the best way to make sure things don't slow down and fester away.

1. What attracts you to a site event?
Writing with characters that you wouldn't normally, getting your character out there publicly so that people can understand your weird choices better

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?
Characters interacting in a world where the story may not be "about them" which gives the character a better sense of scope than you get if you hide in a corner and only write by yourself.

3. What deters you from a site event?
The commitment of having time to keep writing until the event ends, since time availability is pretty hit or miss for me.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?
lore based events, then story-driven sagas, then competitive, but it honestly depends on what character I'm playing.

And then some more specific questions that may be covered above but I feel are worth asking if not:

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?
Quite. events like these build the rivalries and friendships that are the coolest parts of a crossover storyline.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?
You must risk it for the biscuit! (And be willing to accept the consequences of things going wrong when you risk too much)

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?
I'm all for friends in high places, but really any rewards are cool.

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?
Only thing that's not good is if there is one person and no backup plan if that person can't keep running things.

Honesty train, choo choo!
  1. Nothing really. Site events don't really mesh with how I write and they never have. I can't write very well on a time table and every time I try I fail. This doesn't mean I don't want site events, it just means that they offer nothing for me. They're difficult for me, because I can't focus like other people can. I'm not able to just turn on my writing ability and pump out a post to further something. Doesn't work like that. Never has. (Looking at you Underverse or Vad pre-Frost)
  2. A meaningful way to advance the lore around my character IC.
  3. Everything in #1 plus other personal reasons.
  4. If anything it would be events tied to site lore. Not that I don't like competition per say, but I've just...had enough. I'm beyond burnt out from that crowd.
  5. Comes and goes. I like my own freedom. The freedom of writing alone means that I don't feel pressure from writing. In that same regard there is maybe a handful of two people who I can write with and not feel bad about not posting every couple of days.
  6. Everything. The more the merrier and the more makes for an interesting story.
  7. Narrative benefit, Coin, and maybe relics?
  8. Doesn't matter to me, really.

1. What attracts you to a site event?

I like lore and character development (and you can get both of that out of competitions or stories, you scrubs).

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?

Something I can reference back to down the road. Whether as a big plot point or little Easter eggs.

3. What deters you from a site event?

Too many people, too much clutter, too disorganized.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?

I'll rock the boat and say 'competitive events'. Stories are great, but they always take too long, and I know this might be amusing for me to say but I'm not huge into writing with a bunch of other characters.

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?

Very little. Writing with more than like, 3 other people just feels like an unorganized cluster fuck.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?

Cool with all of those.

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?

All of the above is fine.

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?

It depends on the event. In competitive events, it should only be one person. In events that are stories, there should likely be either more 'hosts' or a contingency plan in case the main individual drops off.

1. What attracts you to a site event?
Something that feels it will be significant to the site as a whole to participate in, really. An event that makes it seem like what I've done in it has at least some consequences beyond just on my character.

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?
An engaging place to write for the entire duration of it.

3. What deters you from a site event?
Extremely vague events that have no specified end date or even hints of conditions for their completion- as they tend to drag on too long for their own good, making everyone lose interest. Not to say they're always bad, just that I feel as though they're not the place for me.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?
Site lore, obviously.

And then some more specific questions that may be covered above but I feel are worth asking if not:

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?
Definitely. If I just wanted to write my character alone, I'd be writing fanfiction, not roleplaying.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?
You could tell me "your character is dead forever now and you literally need to roll a new one, there is no way to come back from this" and I'd still at least strongly consider it if the roleplay interested me.

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?
Any and all, but first and foremost something actually interesting to put my character through.

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?
No strong opinion, but I usually prefer events to be at least be partially staffed by multiple runners, for the sake of positive redundancy in case one or more is not capable of consistent updates. (Even if it's mostly being run by one person, a backup just in case is best.)

1. What attracts you to a site event?
The chance to write with a large group of people I wouldn't otherwise write with, a guided story that I get to be part of, and the chance for earning extra currency/items

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?
The things in Q1

3. What deters you from a site event?
I'm getting a bit over competitive events, since they seem to bring out the worst in a small group of people that ruins it for me. Plus they're just mentally fatiguing.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?
Non-competitive stuff, can be tied into site lore or not.

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?
I'm a fan of it.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?
I'm cool with anything, as long as it's declared before the event starts so I know what I'm getting into.

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?
Anything and everything!

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?
I don't mind, as long as it moves at a decent pace.

1. What attracts you to a site event?

Competition.

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?

To improve my writing by facing off against other great writers.

3. What deters you from a site event?

Size. Large scale events (like Dark Data) can take FOREVER to finish. Which puts any plans I'd have for personal story growth on hold until its done.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?

Competitive.

And then some more specific questions that may be covered above but I feel are worth asking if not:

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?

I'm always down for some writes with peeps.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?

All the risk!

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?

All the rewards!

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?

Depends on the scale of the event. Enormous events need multiple people running them. Smaller events? 1 or 2 peeps can handle that.

1. What attracts you to a site event?
The fact that it's the first site event!

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?
Dem chievies, honestly. It would just be nice to be a part of site history.

3. What deters you from a site event?
It always takes forever, people write slowly and with a HUGE event, it takes freaking forever. It's also sometimes difficult to motivate my character with some of these scenarios.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?
I mostly participate comp events, but I'd love to get into some smaller event based ones where everyone is working together.

And then some more specific questions that may be covered above but I feel are worth asking if not:

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?
I really liked the aspect of getting randomly paired up with people in DA18. I got to hang and meet and greet with some folks I wouldn't usually get to, and that was a great community builder! Large groups usually fucking suck, tbh. It's disorienting, you have to read EVERYTHING, people miss stuff, there's not a lot of opportunity to coordinate with the people you're interacting with, and liek I said before, it takes foreeevverrrrr to do anything.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?
kill me IDGAF

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?
I think Trinkets would be cool! I'm not into Relics this early, and I dunno what kinda narrative benefits are really out there this early on. And DEM CHIEVES

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?
It depends on how the event is set up. My primary desire from an event runner is that they get things done quickly, efficiently and in a way that feels satisfying as a writer. Whatever combo of people accomplishes that doesn't really bother me

1. What attracts you to a site event? - I'm a huge fan of PvP so that is always a plus in my book. That said one of the favorite events I participated in was the Ashen Steppes portion of the Dark Data Saga. I enjoyed having the option to play the bad guys and directly oppose the good PCs rather than simply PvE boss fight the enemies.

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event? - Unique rewards are always nice, but I like potentially altering the course of history and getting recognition for it.

3. What deters you from a site event? - Lack of PvP and/or lack of significance, if a event doesn't have any grand impact it can turn me away. That said, I'm not that picky.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in? Competitive events are top for me, but I also enjoy sagas that have mutiples moving parts/meta strategy involved.

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players? I'm perfectly fine fucking off to my own corner and writing by myself, but the nature of the site means that interaction is really what I'm here for. Large groups can get clusterfuckey so I think organization is key in regards to groups larger than four. I participated in a cluster of an expedition into the Frozen Fields with like 7-8 other writers, easily one of my favorite threads but we had to enact a posting order because things got out of hand.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with? Gimme all dem consequences, I want to hurt.

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?
Relics are the shit, as are other esoteric/unique rewards. Things that translate into a tangible story piece or are otherwise something that not everyone has.

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers? No preference. D.A. was largely run by one person while several other sagas were ran by several people. I think having a lead runner with a couple assistants is probably the way to go with bigger events.

1. What attracts you to a site event?

Making friends!

2. What are you hoping to get out of a site event?

Friends, character development, and ideas for new storylines.

3. What deters you from a site event?

Well, I guess if it drags on for too long that's not really fun. But I've done storylines on another site :)P) that went on for waaaaay too long, even causing people to become inactive or drop out despite having a GREATish idea at the start. Still, it's hard to get writers to make an event short and sweet.

4. What types of site events are you more likely to participate in (competitive, story-driven sagas independent of overarching lore, events tied directly into site lore)?

Competitive with at least some of my characters. I'm a big weenie, though, so mostly events tied to site lore.

5. How interested are you, in a general sense, in interaction with other players? With large groups of other players?

I'd like to interact with anyone and everyone, but I do like those events where you can settle in/partner up with one or two other players.

6. What degree of in-character risk (death, bounties, a powerful faction hating your guts, etc) are you comfortable with?

Any of it. Come at me, loserz.

7. What types of rewards are you searching for in accordance with that risk (Relics, trinkets, coin, narrative benefit, etc)?

Trinkets/coin.

8. Are you more or less comfortable in events run by only one person? By two or more co-runners? By one person with some helpers?

No opinion really.
