Soma is a 15-year-old teenage human with spiky dark red-colored hair, lively yellow eyes and a vertical scar on his left eyebrow that he's had since his early childhood. Though very average-looking overall, close inspection shows that his hands and arms bear the marks of someone who's worked as a professional chef, from burn marks of hot stoves that he's touched to scar tissue from the numerous times he's accidentally cut himself with a kitchen tool. While not exceptionally athletic or muscular he has his body in good shape thanks to the physical activity that comes with cooking professionally.

In a casual environment Soma usually wears a dark blue long-sleeved shirt with the logo of his family's restaurant, the Yukihira, on the front left and across the back. As a leftover from his time in the Totsuki Culinary Academy he also wears the school uniform which is a white short-sleeved and collared shirt, blue-brownish trousers, brown loafers and, during colder seasons, a navy blue blazer with white borders on the pockets and lapels. Finally he ties his trademark white headband around his left wrist, having it with him at all times short of when he's bathing.

When cooking Soma puts on a white apron over his waist whilst discarding his Totsuki uniform shirt and the blazer. As a sign of him getting serious, he also ties the headband around his forehead.

Personality​

Soma's a very energetic, optimistic and friendly person. He's very confident in his skills as a chef and keen to challenge others to prove himself. As a result of his courage and often reckless behavior however, during his time at the Totsuki college he often got himself into high-risk situations where he risked being expelled from the school if he lost a Shokugeki - a jury-rated cooking duel. Though it could be believed that he forces himself into such situations to improve faster with a risk, that is not the case - he is simply confident that he'll be able to succeed, one way or another, by trying as best as he can.
He isn't afraid to admit that his opponents are better than him and that he has deficiencies and issues that he must work on to overcome - as he has proven many times before in a number of Shokugekis. And if he is defeated, he admits that he wasn't good enough and thus must try harder.

His optimistic and friendly behavior makes him a charismatic person that makes friends easily. His willingness to help others out plus the fact that he helps his opponents up after defeating them in Shokugekis and points them out on how they can improve the things they did wrong has gotten him a fairly sizable group of friends.

His cooking style is unorthodox, much like Soma himself. He constantly thinks about ways to innovate, evolve and improve his cooking by learning about food cultures from other countries and their methods to prepare food, then combining it into his own solutions. He is not particularly talented but overcomes far more skilled opponents with this style.

History​

Pre-Multerra History

As the son of the master chef Joichiro Saiba and his unnamed wife, Soma was born into a family where cooking was very important, given that his father ran a japanese restaurant. At age 3 he began working as his father's sous-chef and starting in sixth grade (age 11-12) he challenged his father to cooking duels. As Joichiro did not pull his punches however, Soma lost a total of 489 times and didn't win even once - that only spurred him on to try to surpass him, however.

When he was 15 years old Joichiro surprised him by enrolling him into the Totsuki Culinary Academy, a prestigious elite school for chefs in training with a brutal curriculum designed to sift out everyone other than the absolute cream of the crop, and a 1% graduation rate to show for it: an academy where cooking means everything. He quickly discovered that though he had twelve years of experience under his belt his classmates were just as skilled, each with their own special styles that he would have to face on his way to the top.

It should be said that there is an important element central to the plot: in line with its highly competitive nature the school offered the so-called Shokugeki, a cooking duel in which two or more pupils of the Totsuki could compete over who could produce the more delicious food for a series of judges, with the stakes being set by the students - often times brutally high ones. Soma attended a Shokugeki only days after enrolling in the academy and staked that if he lost he would be expelled. Despite facing very skilled opponents in front of a hard jury however, Soma rolled in several wins without a single loss.

Throughout the first year Soma participated in a variety of lectures and courses such as the Totsuki Friendship and Rapport Training Camp which weeded out those lacking commitment and had dozens of students expelled every day, and the Autumn Election Tournament in which the students had their dishes judged mercilessly by a jury of professionals in the high-class food industry, restaurant critics and gourmets. He showed great promise however, making it as far as to the three-way finals, though he did unfortunately not win.

As a reward for making it into the main tournament Soma and the other participants got to meet the Totsuki's Elite Ten Council, the ten best students of the school forming the student council. He proceeded to challenge them to a Shokugeki but quickly got turned down. However one of the council offered that if Soma could beat him in any style of cooking he would consider his challenge, which kindled the fighting spirits of both Soma and his fellow tournament participants.

That day ended quietly for Soma as he wondered how he could go about accomplishing the goal set before him. As it turned out however, he would never get to that point. For the next morning he woke up it was not in his room in the dormitory, but on a ship in a strange new world...

And so upon arriving in this new world he soon found that the infinite world of tastes to be explored had not only grown larger yet, and it was ready for him to dive into.

As an absolute last resort, Soma will resort to using one of his precious cooking pans in battle. Though he is heavily reluctant to both risk damaging a good cooking utensil and injure (and thereby disgruntle) a potential customer, not to mention that he is averse to fighting in the first place, the cast iron pan is not to be underestimated. Of course, Soma hardly uses it for anything outside of buying himself enough time to run away.
The Furaipan can be used both as a makeshift shield to reduce the force of an attack, and (applied to the right spots) it can concuss his opponent for a few moments, mildly disorienting them for a few moments. As it is not an actual weapon however, the damage it deals is minimal.

Fluff: It can also be used outside of battle to fry... provided that it doesn't get taken away or damaged too much.

Opaleon Speciality: Seafood Gourmet

"Opaleon's sea is rich in seafood but sorely lacking in the other components of a balanced diet. How do I counteract this and offer a nutritious and mouth-watering dish in the process...?" - Soma before discovering the bowl's magic power

For obvious reasons Soma couldn't cook the same way he does in other situations when a battle breaks out. However on Opaleon he came into the possession of an item that allows him to be an aid to his allies: A black bowl that's a little bigger than what both hands could envelop, with a rune inscribed on the bottom of the inside.
By activating that rune simply by holding the bowl in one hand Soma morphs the magic of his environment into edible food that appears inside the bowl and is cooked to perfection, then cools down to an edible temperature, taking a total of about thirty seconds before it can be eaten. The magic food disappears after some ten minutes however, so be sure to eat it while it's hot! A bite revitalizes the person that eats it, healing their injuries. The essence of fish contained in the dish also allows that person to breathe underwater. These effects last for around an hour each.

When conjuring a Seafood Gourmet dish Soma crafts a mouth-watering stew or soup based around seafood - and there's plenty to go around, just grab a spoon and dig in!
