Character Name: Starscream

Character Source: The 2005 IDW Transformers Continuity

Starting Location: The Beyond

Character Behavior:
Starscream is an Ambiguous Opportunist. Starscream is Ambiguous in that his motives are almost always a mystery; he seems to shift between good and evil, loyal and disloyal, and he doesn't even know himself most of the time which side his true loyalties align with. One can never tell where they stand with Starscream. He often appears to be a cold-hearted and shrewd manipulator, but in the absence of his former leader, Megatron, finds himself burdened more and more by things like empathy and ethics.

Starscream is also an Opportunist. In battle, Starscream takes any opportunity he has, either to avoid damage to himself or (less frequently) totally destroy his enemy. No trick is too dirty and no tactic too dishonorable for Starscream. However, this does not just mean that Starscream fights dirty. His opportunism often leads him to avoid a fight altogether, searching for any opportunity to weasel his way out of a fight if it will benefit him in the long term.

Character History:

Where does one start with Starscream?

He was constructed cold, like many other bots (and a feature that most bots would agree is a sign of a particularly unremarkable bot). He had a brief stint at the Nova Point Academy, but ended up leaving and turning to crime. In spite of his flying alt-mode stereotyping him as good for little other than fighting or transporting goods, he was able to land a job as a precinct Senator due to his natural charisma. Eventually, though, he grew bored of organized politics and left, but not before embezzling a large sum of money from his fellow Senators. Using his newfound wealth, he was able to recruit two lackeys, Skywarp and Thundercracker, who he had reformatted to look just like him in an exceptional act of vanity (and to throw off any authorities in pursuit of him).

Years later, Starscream became interested in the work of miner turned warrior-poet, Megatron of Tarn, who had writings on his radical ideals of freedom. He and his two lackeys (now known as "the Seekers") ended up joining with Megatron's growing Decepticon movement, adding an important aerial element to his army. Starscream also got the task of recruiting new Decepticons, his silver-tongue making it an easy task. In one of the most important moves in the early days of the Decepticons, Starscream, along with fellow Decepticon Soundwave, executed the ruling Senate.

The Decepticon rebellion eventually spiraled into a full fledged Cybertronian civil war between the Decepticons and the Autobots who rose up to fight them, eventually spreading across the galaxy. Over the years, Starscream found himself more and more disillusioned by Megatron's leadership, seeing him as an ineffective leader who strayed from his original ideals. Starscream constantly made moves to try and usurp Megatron's position as leader, but his efforts invariably failed, and he often found himself brutally punished for them.

This status quo continued for a long time, Starscream taking little victories that never actually went very far, until a massive event on Cybertron: a former explorer, Galvatron, heralded the arrival of an entity known as the D-Void, which used the bodies of the Decepticons to make one, massive beast. Eventually, this beast was defeated, and the individual Decepticons were fitted with identification chips by the Autobots, with the aftershock returning Cybertron to a primitive, but undamaged state. Due to Cybertron's rebirth, countless unaligned Cybertronians who had fled the world during the war came back in search of their home. Megatron was nowhere to be found, and Optimus Prime, the Autobots' leader, renounced his position, leaving Cybertron in exchange for the unaligned Cybertronians tolerating the other Autobots continued presence.

Starscream seized what he saw as a new opportunity, attempting to serve as a bridge between Autobots, unaligned Cybertronians, and Decepticons, all in an attempt to gain the political power he had coveted for so long. After some initial suspicion, Starscream indeed became a significant political figure, a representative for the Decepticons in the temporary government, alongside the Autobot Bumblebee and the unaligned Metalhawk. Eventually, a Titan, a massive and ancient Cybertronian, even declared Starscream to be a Chosen One, destined to unite all of Cybertron. Starscream fully intended to use this declaration for his own political gain, but some part of him even believed the prophecy and truly sought to unite Cybertron.

Things went well for Starscream, up until one day when a heavily damaged, but functioning, Megatron emerged from the wilderness. Megatron was immediately taken into custody, but managed to escape and quickly retake control of most remaining Decepticons, unleashing a long standing plan to destroy the newly rebuilt Cybertronian society. He took Starscream captive and heavily damaged him as his Decepticons ravaged the rebuilt city of Iacon. However, a party led by Bumblebee and Metalhawk came to rescue him. He was safe and sound, and ended up alone with Metalhawk. Metalhawk delivered a rousing speech, and it gave Starscream an idea: he became convinced that if he killed Metalhawk, he could use the inter-factional conflict as a scapegoat and fulfill the prophecy, uniting non-aligned Cybertronians together. He took aim at Metalhawk and got ready to fire, but as he closed his eyes and squeezed the trigger of his blaster, he felt a shift, and when he reopened his eyes he was floating in the vacuum of some vast expanse of space.
