Chara woke up blearily, the familiar feeling of a fuzzy paw shaking her awake. Too big to be Rei’s, too small to be Dad’s, the puzzle was rather easy to solve for someone who’d spent their whole life working around them.

“Hey, mom.” Chara spoke up blearily. “Came out to see Rei and I?”

The Red-eyed youth opened her eyes to see the familiar form of Toriel staring back at her. The older goat gave him a smile that spoke of warmth, kindness, and of the fact she was holding something else back, as was usual for his mother. If Asgore was an open book, Toriel was a locked door even when there was no call for it.

Chara hoped what awaited behind the lock was pie.

“You’ve went and grown taller again.” Toriel said with an indulgent smile.

“Lucky I’ve got a big mom, or I’d be too old for piggy-back rides.” Chara shot back with a grin.

“Chara Teres Dreemurr, if you think that you’re getting a piggy-back at your age you still haven’t fully woken up!” Toriel exclaimed, giving her an angry frown for just a moment… before it turned into a smile. “...Though a hug for your dear old mom wouldn’t be a problem.” Toriel said with a smile, leaning against the bed. It didn’t take Chara more than a second to take her up on that promise, jumping at the chance to hug her.

Tears fell from her face, but Toriel didn’t seem to notice as she scooped Chara up, just like when Chara had first met her, and brought her through the door from her room into the Dreemurr residence.

“I love you.” Chara would suddenly blurt out.

“I know. I love you too, my child.” Toriel said with a smile that Chara leaned into, as she suddenly found herself at her familiar spot at the dining table.

“How has your brother been?” Her voice called from behind, and Chara felt too afraid to look back.

“He’s been amazing. He’s really developed in his magic, and he recently learned how to heal! He has Dad’s knack for it, I think. I, uhh…” Chara replied, taking a breath. “...Don’t know if he realises it, but he really did save me this time. Not for pretend. For real. He just needed the right push, I guess.”

“Oh, his father was so much like that too. Whenever Asgore really needed to, he rose to the occasion. Though Asriel seems like he’s usually less distracted than his father, now.” Toriel called from the kitchen.

“Nah, that’s just around you. Or in an important situation. Asriel’s still as squirrel as ever if it’s just the two of us, and he knows he can relax.” Chara added with a snort, taking a deep breath as she appreciated the smell of home, for the first time in forever.

That got a sigh from Toriel, and Chara’s heart sank as she spoke, “He really is his father’s son, at the end of the day.”

Chara gulped, as she felt something build in her throat. “You know, Dad… he’s said the same thing about me and you, to Rei.” Chara replied, choosing to let her tears flow if she couldn’t keep her voice even. “That I reminded him of you. And I always… I always took it sideways, because… I wanted to be more like him. I wanted to be honest and kind like him. Even… even though you’ve done all this for me. Even though you’re smart and kind and pretty and…”

Chara Couldn’t take it anymore, as her voice broke, and she got up from the chair, no longer the brave teenager but the same ten year old who was healed so long ago. That child pushed herself into Toriel’s waiting arms.

“I’m so sorry! I'm so, so sorry!”

Toriel gave a gently ‘shh’ as she held Chara close in her arms. “Hey, now, it’s okay. It’s not your fault.” Toriel quietly told her. “You do have a gentle soul just like he does, under there. Even if it’s a little hidden. But you know what you have to do, right?”

Chara gave a sniffle. “I don’t know if I’m strong enough.”

“You don’t have to be. He’s there for you, too.” Toriel replied with an even tone. “You’ll keep eachother brave. You always have.”

“But I’ve lost most of my magic-”

“I remember a girl who had nothing but a stick, a limp and some determination saving my child from being bullied a long time back. I don’t think she’s gone anywhere… do you?”

Chara looked up with a frown across her snotty face. “...No, but this is different-”

“It is harder. But you have grown so much, my child. You’ve lost so much, but you’ve still saved so many. I am so, so proud of you.” Toriel replied with a warmth glinting in her eyes.

“...Would the real Toriel really…?” Chara replied, guilt filling her voice.

“I would never have blamed you for the ship. You know I knew my job, and the risks. It wasn’t your fault, Chara. It wasn’t Asriel’s either. But I know that to the end, to the very last second, my last thoughts were of you, and Asriel. Now… let me hold you, for just a little longer.”

Chara just clung tightly to her mother's fur, as her restraint broke, and she cried as hard as she could for the first time in recent years into her mother's blouse, until the light of morning stole the moment from her.
