It was a quiet, peaceful day on the endless seas of Opealon. The surface of the water was smooth as glass, with barely a breeze to move the water. Bits of debris floated about, mostly wood of various sizes but also other buoyant remains of past battles. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as the sun beat down on a peaceful, though slightly littered, ocean surface.

Then there was a bubble.

Then a few more. Then a lot more.

Zack Fair burst from the water with roar of righteous fury, while a massive Kraken ripped from the surface after him. Zack swung the Buster Sword as he sailed from the water, slicing a tentacle that dared grasp at him away. The Kraken’s cry of pain echoed across the sea, but there was no one to hear it. The battle was only between them.

Zack had been sailing the seas of a realm known as the Vasty Deep with a ragtag crew in search of something only known as a Violet Star Piece. Their journey led to them fighting a pirate ship full of skeletons, which Zack had been more than happy to engage in direct battle. Yet as the fight raged on, the sky and the sea both began to splinter. Darkness fell upon the land as a Kraken emerged, and dragged Zack and the undead pirate crew beneath the splintering waves. Zack wasn’t sure what became of his companions, as he was far too busy dealing with the attempts on his life. He never knew when the Kraken, the undead pirates, and himself left the dying world from before and entered the Crossroads.

It was completely irrelevant for the pirates. Skulls and bones of various species shot in every direction as the battle raged into a new world, the remnants of an undead pirate crew suffering their final loss in a three way battle. Now it was nothing more than a super powered special forces operator and a mythical ocean beast, both unaware of their change in environment. Zack accepted the sudden arrival of the Kraken with nothing more than a smirk as he sailed upwards, pursued by it’s grasping tentacles.

Zack made two more strikes with the Buster Sword, cleaving two tentacles effortlessly from the screaming beast. He backflipped through the air as he did, landing gracefully on a floating piece of driftwood. He only had to momentarily balance himself as he squared his feet up on the floating debris. It managed to stay floating, but did sink slightly below the water’s surface. Luckily Zack’s boots remained waterproof, so he didn’t even notice the small descent.

“We drag our asses all this way, and this is the welcome we get!?” Zack taunted the beast, shaking his head to get some excess saltwater out of his hair.

The Kraken let out another roar and swung at Zack once more, who was quick to jump back into the fray. He landed on one of the appendages and quickly sprinted across it, until another tentacle took a swing at him. Zack didn’t miss a beat, leaping into the air as he swung at the limb. After cleanly slicing it off, Zack landed on another piece of debris, turning around with a smile to see the damage.

“Have to do better than that!” Zack shouted as the Kraken swung the bloody stump around.

Zack certainly didn’t expect what happened next. A dark aura manifested around the wound, giving the appearance of a new tentacle, simply made of darkness. Not just darkness, though, it felt like an energy of nothingness. Just as soon as it appeared, it quickly vanished. Zack blinked in shock, and the Kraken itself appeared stunned by that development.

It a flash, Zack’s vision was flooded with images of far away places. He saw machines and gears falling apart, surrounded by the same energy of darkness. He immediately understood it was a dead world called Govermorne. Just the same, he saw a battle across a wasteland between robots of all types. Cevanti. None of this was anything he’d heard of before, but just as suddenly the word “Crossroads” was burned into his brain. He immediately understood, though he didn’t quite get why: he had left the Omniverse, and had arrived somewhere else. He’d seen the collapse, but didn’t believe it as it happened.

The arrival in a new realm didn’t phase Zack in the slightest. At this point, what could? Every time it looked like he was going to die, something drastic sent him somewhere else. He focused and briefly saw a squidlike being. He immediately understood it was a being known as an Arbiter, the rulers of his new realm. This had to be what was communicating with him, sending him the strange messages. Of course, it didn’t appreciate that he was somewhat busy at the moment, dealing with another tentacled monstrosity.

Zack decided he didn’t have the time to deal with this relic of the old world, when the new world was crying for his help. He leaped forward again, swinging the Buster Sword as he moved through the air. With only a few calculated strikes, Zack was able to remove the beast’s attacking limbs, and landed on the head of the Kraken. Before it could retaliate, Zack plugged the Buster Sword downwards into the monster’s face.

A final cry of agony echoed across the empty ocean as Zack ended the life of his attacker. The Kraken’s body began to sink beneath the waves of Ophealon, and Zack merely hopped backwards to the next piece of driftwood he could find.

“Hey, Ciara! You see that!?” Zack shouted as he looked around, finally taking stock of the situation. His companions apparently hadn’t crossed realms with him. He was alone on an empty ocean, with no means of transport. At least he wasn’t fighting a bloodthirsty sea monster.

Zack could only exhale slowly as he gathered his thoughts. A new world awaited, and already called for help. He had been content to be nothing more than a traveler, as a call to arms like this was something he had long since moved past. Yet, as he wanted the Kraken’s body descend to the depths of the sea, he thought once more about the squid faced entity he’d caught a quick glimpse of. The striking similarities were not lost upon him, as he thought back on his call to action. Help was needed to combat the demonic Darkseid and his horrible forces known as the Unmade that threatened this whole realm, that much was for sure. But the Kraken was probably more appropriate to summon for assistance in a world that was nothing but ocean.

The Arbiter had been talking to him, right?
