There comes a time when any sapient creature, no matter how driven, how instinct-filled, how ambitious, must sit and digest their day’s experience. Think of smaller things. Employ themselves in mindfulness and errant thoughts. For many creatures, this particular usage of time ‘downtime’, ‘playtime’, whatever one wishes to call it, takes up several hours a day. For Ridley, it only ever managed to last for specific, brief moments.

One of those scattered timeframes in his day happened to be mealtimes, and as Ridley sat in the endless wilds of Mesa Roja, with a jaw dripping with intestines and blood, his attention could finally turn to simpler things.

Like the difficulty involved in constructing a bone throne.

Certainly, it wouldn’t be the most difficult thing Ridley had ever done. The sands of Mesa Roja allowed for a sterile environment, as long as Ridley could keep the bones away from scavengers. Constructing it would take slightly more time, not to mention finding the required donors for a perch capable of fitting him. The problem really came down to his lack of a proper base, really. A Ridley-sized assortment of bones wouldn’t fit in Nazrabar’s best workshops, and it would look very suspicious coming through the city.

He needed to get a proper ship. That was the ticket. Something big that could fit his massive frame. Something like his old flagship… though the odds of his original ship being able to be built on the resources of a planet like this were slim. His original blackened behemoth was able to rip the atmosphere off of a planet, but it was the size of a small moon and made of very rare metals and materials. He doubted Multerra even had the resources to make something that big.

Maybe another underground base, Like on Zebes?...The thought wasn’t without merit. Something nice and warm where he could sit and enjoy himself. Bask as he gave orders and planned out his next move in close proximity to lava.Just like home - at least, the way he remembered it. The barren plains lacked lava, of course, and his progenitors-

A low growling noise startled Ridley from his thoughts, and the predator jumped up immediately, wings unfurling as he instinctively reached for the supremacy of the air. The beast looked back to his prey with an expression of pure hatred. He was certain he’d killed the Kodo beast - it’s intestines were still hanging from his jaw. So how did…

The Dragon stopped, it’s fury turning to curiosity as an idea hit the old lizard. He kept his gaze firmly on the Kodo, turning his head as he inspected the fat, dead beast.

Still unmoving. Still dead. The only bits of movement were the little pieces of gore being scattered and spread by Ridley’s own wings. The dragon’s eyes narrowed as he realized his caution was wasting precious nutrition, but he now felt the need to test this for himself.

Ridley’s landing strategy wasn’t particularly nuanced. He simply let himself drop, his massive frame producing little drag as he smashed into the Kodo’s body.

And as soon as his legs hit the beast’s belly, there was that low growl again.

The Dragon blinked a few times, as he reached a talon around the creatures chest, and gave it a big squeeze.

Another low growl.

The Kodo wasn’t alive. He’d just been forcing the air out of it’s remains. The old dragon smiled, as it squeezed again.

The same growl came from the Kodo’s corpse, and the Dragon let out a horrific, rasping bark that passed for laughter amongst its species. The little thing had been already dead! He’d been jumping at shadows! What did he possibly have to fear from the shadows in the first place-

The dragon’s smile faded at that thought. The image of a golden-clad hunter ran through the old pirate’s mind.

The pirate’s wings stiffened, his eyes blazed wide with fiery intensity, and his Talons squeezed through the Kodo’s flesh. The Kodo’s damaged bones broke, and it’s lungs popped under the pressure, leaving the dead beast finally silent.

It was mealtime and the hunter still haunted him even now without being here she stalked him she stalked him and now he couldn’t even enjoy the pleasure of crushing her phantom between his jaws the hunter the hunter the hunter had to pay where was the hunter-

A shudder went through the dragon as he snapped back to attention. His smile was gone. Eyes of rage kindled as he looked down at the Kodo…

The hunter wasn’t here. He could not prove his supremacy.
But he could make do with a bit of a tantrum.

Ridley’s eyes opened with a frenetic, crazed look as he put one claw after another through the Kodo’s hide. With his Talons, he pulled the beast in two. With his Jaws, he split the creature’s skull in half and enjoyed the rich meat within. With his wings, he lifted from the ground with enough speed that by the time the Kodo’s bulk had been thrown into the stony mountain nearby, the remainder of the beast was pulverized beyond recognition on impact.

It was not the same as popping the hunter’s exo-skeleton beneath his claws. But it would tide him over.
