Chara groaned, as she felt the ship lurch. Or maybe that was just her stomach - it was hard to tell in here. She’d finally stopped throwing up ink, and all she was left with was an upset stomach, soreness from head to toe, and a constant feeling of dehydration. And a colossal headache.

The half-asleep mage didn’t see the way she wanted right now, numbers flashing, so she closed her eyes. It didn’t help. Numbers and symbols and little accents and indentations flashed across her vision uselessly. Focus didn’t come, and the mage found herself sitting in a maddening void of calculation. It didn’t correlate to anything, nor did it link to anything around her by necessity, she knew. Or more - she wouldn’t be able to tell. Her exhaustion had caught up with her, and without the focus she normally kept, the world was laid bare, the raw data that kept this little farce going.

It made her want to vomit, as the static swirled, but it wasn’t the first time she’d lapsed, and the madness of the world she saw had long since slipped from horror to simple depression. Perhaps… it really would have been better to be born blind.

“Chara!”

A voice pierced through the fog, and the seer looked up with a few blinks of her eyes. The numbers stopped shifting, started replacing themselves into familiar shapes and columns.

ASRIEL DREEMURR finally read in bright letters from among the haze, as the numbers filled into the shape of a familiar monster, the numbering telling her all sorts of minute details she absolutely refused to listen to.

Her brother was more than anything this cursed sight could ever attempt to reduce him to.

“As…riel.” Chara managed, choosing her words slowly as the world returned to shapes and colors, light and shadow.

Asriel looked at her with a quizzical expression. “You… were your eyes doing the, uhhh, thing again?”

“Still remember the tell, huh?” Chara asked with an easy smile, sitting up on her hospital bed. It was comfortable enough, but with the bruising still left for her to heal - she assumed the doc was a lot more worried about everything else - she was pretty sure there was no comfortable surface to rest on as she laid a hand on the bed.

“When you go space cadet like that, of course I am. I… figured you might be feeling that way, after what you just went through.” Asriel mentioned with a sheepish smile.

It was then that Chara noticed what he’d brought.

“Rei, is that…”

“Great god Asriel, if you please. And yes, it is.” Asriel volunteered with a happy chirp, as he laid the tray on the table.

The divine drink of the ages. A flavor that delighted and a heat that built power. Something no one should go without for too long, coupled with the sugary pillows of the era.

Hot Chocolate. And Rei had brought two steaming cups.

“Great god Asriel, I deny not your noble power, nor the goodness of your gifts. This humble woman wishes simply to sample your great work and give honor.”

Asriel just gave a confident smirk, placing both his hands on his hips. “Hmm… Great God Asriel shall allow this! Enjoy my charity, human!” the younger Dreemurr proclaimed, puffing out his chest like a peacock, as Chara took a sip.

God, it was good. After living on whatever she could manage these past few months, and going through hell on opealon, the sweetness burned a hot trail down her throat and left her tearing up.

“It’s so good…” the Dreemurr half-said, half-wept.

“But of course. God of hyperdeath, Asriel Dreemurr, gives out only the very best in food.”

Chara gave him a slight grin as she looked into his eyes, amused despite herself at the ego pouring out of it. Asriel’s boundless confidence was one of her favorite things about him.

“So who’d you get these from?”

But Chara had few greater joys than popping it once it got a little too big for his little brother.

“Well…” Asriel began, before his face fell. “Meng gave me these two a little while back. It took a bit to get through the ship. Apparently there’s some party going on, and she told me we might not want to disturb it right now.”

“Party?”

Asriel gave a nod. “I don’t know what kind, but I think Meng was carrying somethin’ that smelled of alcohol.”

Chara frowned, the thought lancing through her head. “Alcohol… I see.”

The thought brought her back to old ballrooms and dining halls that cost more than the average monster’s yearly paycheck. Of dresses and politics and adults stumbling in foggy hazes that had to do with far more than just the wine they’d drowned themselves in.

“Yes, I think that can be quite their own affair. I would rather avoid the substance right now. It… brings back memories.”

Asriel looked to Chara with a sympathetic frown. “Your parents…”

The Goat boy’s question was interrupted as Chara’s arm lanced up and pulled Asriel down with a quiet yelp, pulling him into a hug on the side as she rested her head against him.

“Yipe! Chara, we look like dorks. And we’re in publi-”

A finger found it’s way to Asriel’s nose with a little ‘boop’. “And it’s a bit embarassing. And it’s reflex to pretend you don’t like it. I get it…”

The elder Dreemurr rested her head against her brothers, and he was forced to smile by herself. “I was wrong. You survived all the way to Opealon. You’ve kept safe, and you’ve protected so many people. You’re a grown-up hero, now. I get it. But I missed you, all of you.” The mage added. Asriel’s fur was soft, and she clung to it perhaps a bit harder than she intended, but she refused to withdraw.

“But… just for today, let me be a big sister who’s very proud of her baby brother. Let me hold you and softly whisper to the world that I won’t let you go. Please, Asriel?”

Asriel’s response was a soft smile, one that turned to a frown, and then to tears.

“I… I missed you. I wanted to come back, and when I saw dad’s spear, I went to find him, and when I… When I looked to find you, I found the locket, and I’m… I’m so stupid. I love you, Chara. You’re my sister. I didn’t want to lose you.”

Asriel leaned into the hug now, grabbing on tightly, and Chara gently brushed a hand up against his head, petting him slowly.

“I… I don’t want to let go. I’m so afraid… I’m afraid I’ll let go, and you’ll be gone. I’m afraid it means saying goodbye. I’m afraid I’ll wake up, and I’ll be alone.”

“Hey, hey.” Chara cooed softly. “I’m not going anywhere. Not anymore. I’ve still got a cute little brother to take care of. And he’s still a crybaby, too.”

“Y… you’re crying too!”

Chara put a hand to her cheek out of reflex, and sure enough…

“Heh. So I am. Guess you get a pass, this time.”
