The jungles of Kraw were proving to be worse than the hidden temple and underground cavern Jason had already ventured through. What had been a refreshing and peaceful sunrise at his exit into the the greater world had quickly deteriorated. The hot sun welcomed humidity, mosquitoes, and lurking beasts in the shadows. Without his powers Jason was forced to be on high alert as he trekked through this lush horror. The only real lead he had was Jericho mentioning a place called New Abraxas. The gangster had spoken of it with considerable disdain, but given Jason’s interactions with the man he immediately thought highly of the place for no other reason than that.

Still, it was one settlement on what Jason was to understand was a distant planet. Back when he had entered martial arts tournaments he struggled to find a dojo in another town most of the time, so how was he supposed to find a single city on this entire planet? He wasn’t optimistic about his chances, but what other option did he have? The barbarians that resided in the temple were looking to kill him on a false promise, and the gangster who had made the promise had leaped into the river to escape when the odds turned against him. It was truly just Jason and the jungle at this point. And, of course, whatever was growling in the brush around him.

So, he carried on stomping through the underbrush. He kept the river nearby for several reasons. The most important was that it was necessary to have a source of hydration nearby at all times, and there was no telling where he would find water next if he wandered away from the river. After all, he didn’t exactly have the means to carry water with him. The other important note was that no civilization in a place like this would set up away from a river. It may not be New Abraxas, but the chances of running into some sort of settlement along the riverfront were drastically increased than his chances if he were to just wander into the woodland.

As he forged a new path, he was suddenly overwhelmed with a feeling of desperate urgency. It wasn’t unfamiliar, being the same sensation he experienced so often as he led counter attacks to a space empresses’ warmongering at least weekly. But that sensation, that feeling, it didn’t belong here on this forgotten jungle world. The sensation increased more than Jason had ever prepared for, enough that he dropped to a kneel as he struggled to get his bearings. What the hell was happening?

His vision was overwhelmed with the image of a Tyrannosaurus-rex roaring into his face. That alone wasn’t too much concern. After his tenure as a superhero channeling the power of the ancient beast, he had begrudgingly accepted the moments of PTSD he’d encountered over the years related to his spirit animal. Yet this was as real as it could possibly get. It felt like the dinosaur was truly there, enough that he lost all bearings on reality and was completely focused on the vision that was appearing around him.

It was horrifyingly familiar.

“It’s over. Rita’s won,” Trini Kwan announced as she threw her hands up within the Power Rangers’ supposedly secure Command Center, attempting to cap a long argument between Jason and the other four Rangers.

Jason recognized the moment in a heartbeat. How could he forget it? Ten years ago the mysterious Green Ranger had been the additional enemy that forced the Power Rangers against the ropes. They’d lost nearly everything in the battles against him, and the Rangers had all but given up. This moment was burned into Jason’s memory, yet he’d never imagined it from the third person perspective he was viewing it from now.

“Rangers, we can’t give up,” Jason had responded quickly, yet desperately, knowing that if he lost the team he would lose himself.

“Why not!?” Kimberly Hart had countered as she echoed everyone else’s sentiment with burning frustration. “Zordon is gone, the Megazord is destroyed… we’re outmatched. Why shouldn’t we!?”

“Billy,” Alpha-Five, the robotic aide to the Power Rangers, and the only one on Jason’s side at the moment, had turned his attention to the silent Blue Ranger in a desperate attempt to claim a slimmer of hope. “What are the odds we can reconnect with Zordon?”

Billy looked longingly at the empty tube their mentor used to defy space and time to communicate with them. He wished he could see Zordon now, to give even the smallest bit of advice. Without any sort of hope, Billy was a staunch realist.

“Less that ten percent,” Billy admitted, making no motions towards any consoles to try and improve the odds. After all, what could he do at this point?

Jason zeroed in on that, though, and marched to the open floor of the Command Center with righteous fury.

“Isn’t the smallest chance of victory enough of a reason for us to keep on fighting?” Jason implored his team as he angrily looked through them all. The looks of apathy and defeat infuriated him. He was beyond letting his team, more than that his closest friends, accept defeat, and it burst out with his rage at the situation. “The world needs us, Rangers!”

Jason’s memory immediately faded into a haze, but his own words echoed in his mind as he struggled to grasp reality once more.

“The world needs us, Rangers!”

Jason blinked his eyes rapidly, finding himself back in reality. It was a strange concept that this hellish jungle was reality and the Command Center was a strange fantasy, but he had to accept what was at this point. It was one of the darkest moments of the Rangers’ he had spontaneously relived, and it was a reminder that he knew deep down he was nothing without his friends and his allies. He had never pretended he could stand alone forever. Even in the bleak moments he had to be the last bastion, it was always with the promise and hope that the other Rangers would join him in short order. It was a chilling vision as he stood more alone than he ever had in his entire life.

He braced himself against a tree as he took several deep breaths to desperately attempt to get his bearings. The sensation he felt was desperate, yet hopeful. He couldn’t explain it, but it felt like he was charging into a battle with overwhelming odds, but with a weapon that he felt could turn the tide if used right. It was a sensation he couldn’t claim to be unfamiliar with, but it was certainly out of place at the moment without any of the familiar weapons.

Visions flooded his mind rapidly, though these were more fleeting than what he had just relived. He saw a world of machines and gears ripped asunder, while monsters and demons clashed through it. People died screaming in horror, while others desperately fled. He saw a battlefield filled with mechs and monsters that all looked like an equal challenge to his own sleeping Dinozord. Amidst the vision, he swore he saw the form of Lord Zedd himself marching through the madness. The sights were concluded by another roaring Tyrannosaurus, this one being only a baby. It screamed in pain and agony.

Jason felt a connection. Again, he challenged the spirit of the Tyrannosaurus every time he morphed into a bright red superhero so it made a bit of sense, or at least what constituted for sense in the past few hours. He couldn’t see it, but he could feel its presence nearby somehow. It was a bizarre and uncomfortable feeling, yet he didn’t sense any real threat.

“Who’s there?” Jason finally just called out for an answer. He stayed alert, looking in every direction, but only saw trees and the river. His visitor was an unseen spirit, and the jungle was eerily quiet and absent of other life around him. The Red Ranger was too new to Kraw to appreciate the significance of such a circumstance.

A child’s giggle was the only response he received. Jason looked around uneasily. That was unsettling.

“Darkseid…” a juvenille voice whispered from the wind. Even more unsettling.

What was even more troubling was that Jason found himself suddenly flooded with knowledge he never asked for. The worlds that burned made sense to him suddenly. He saw people fall to a terror known as the Unmaking. An understanding of the Arbiters flooded his mind. They were beings that dictated the world around him, yet didn’t control them. He felt an attachment to Chomper, the Tyranno spirit of Kraw, not just for their kindred spirit animal but also for being the Arbiter to summon him here. He sensed there was some other reason than the strength of the Tyrannosaurus that had brought him to Chomper’s attention, but any attempt to focus on it merely rewarded him with a fleeting image of a white tiger and a falcon.

There was some reason to that, but he pushed beyond understanding it for the time being. He recognized a call to arms when he saw it, just as he had a decade ago when Zordon had entrusted him with the power coin that made him leader of a team of superheroes. But he knew he didn’t dare to charge into battle alone. Jericho had mention streaks of multicolored light touching down across the jungle world. His friends were trapped in this land just like he was, and he needed to find them.

Despite the increased sense of urgency, all he could do was continue to trek down the river. He wouldn’t dare ignore the evil lurking beyond, but he would do everything he could to prepare before facing it head on. Even knowing Zedd was in this realm like he was, he knew this Darkseid being was a greater threat. He had been thrust into the greatest challenge of his life, and he knew he needed his closest friends and allies if he was to combat it. Before bringing the battle to the next evil, he would reunite his team.

Together they would be more.
