Character Behavior
Zhao is an Impatient strategist.

Out of battle, Zhao is a man trying to make up for his past life and trying to be a new, honest man, while still struggling with a temper the size of Kentucky and the tender pride of a twelve year old boy. His lack of self-control wrestles with the fact he tries to step out from the man he once was, and his behavior is, thus, erratic. he has a particular soft spot for women and kids, and he will usually try to help out decent folk, but that's not to say he won't be rude about it the entire time, or that he's going to do it with much concern for the feelings of the people he's helping. He's selfish, spoiled, rude, and stubborn, but also surprisingly clever, steadfast, and reliable when he's backed up into a corner, and his pride won't let him abandon someone once his heart softens and he accidentally finds himself caring about them.

In battle, this struggle is often reflected in his military tactics. Despite being a brilliant military strategist, Zhao's anger often blinds him and leads him to over-extend and make mistakes over a longer battle. despite this, while on the back-foot Zhao is still very much the fire nation general he once was, and with the experiences his newer life has taught him - eking out an existence amidst the ice and snow - his experience has given him a lot of creative solutions to problems. Many times he may plan out a daring stratagem to ensnare his enemies. Other times he doesn't and just makes it up as he goes along, but he'll still pretend it was thought through from the start. Either way it's going to be messy, clumsy, and probably involve Zhao getting hurt at least once before the battle is over.

standing at 6'2, Zhao remains an imposing and fairly well-muscled man of the fire nation, but wears the adornments of his adopted tribe, even if they no longer exist in this world, and well-worn navy blue furs. He's a giant of a man, though not by the standards of this world, and he has an intensity to his gaze... when he's still on-pace.

Shortly after the events of Avatar: Book 1, Zhao found himself an amnesiac, washed up on the shores of the Northern water tribe. out of pity, and seeing it as a sign from the spirits, they took him in and re-taught him as a member of their tribe. This was, indeed, a sign from the spirits, for Zhao had been chosen for a unique punishment for his actions against the moon. As he grew, learned more of himself, he felt a true member of the tribe - until they told him the truth. feeling betrayed, he left for the fire nation, Begging for a pardon from Zuko.

He was granted this, and despite losing his firebending, and his former memories, quickly reverted to his old ways by profiteering off protection money as an admiral in the army... that is, until one of the shipments happened to be a group of slaves from the northern water tribe. Taking a lot of heat, he managed to protect them all while making enemies with quite a few in the imperial navy, causing him to be discharged and sent back to the northern water tribe... at which point, an unfortunate run-in with an obsessed Azula, and an attempt to push her from a self-destructive obsession with harnessing spirits for her own sake as much as his tribes, caused him to be banished from there, too.
This was all the spirits plan, for the Ocean spirits had determined that their old pond was no longer a safe place for them to live. Thus, Zhao's lot in life was to become their pond - to travel the world as a container that could defend itself from harm. Many things happened from there, including a new end to Azula's obsession, Zhao and Zuko working together to stop Azula's mad schemes, Zhao's first flying bison ride, and a meeting with the spirits, as Zhao begged for a pardon from this duty, at least for a while.

Shortly after seeing the kids he'd rescued off, Zhao got it - in the form of a nasty headache, and an awakening on an Ice Floe in opealon.

Zhao has a veteran's life, and while never the strongest firebender, there were few who outclassed him. while some of this came simply from his sheer power, he had a strong offensive and defensive posture and a very well-maintained physique that have never left him even at his most amnesiac. This gives him an incredible level of strength, decent athleticism, and the avatar habit of being able to jump way too far for a normal human being.

This beautiful, functional spear is made of beautifully carved bone by Zhao himself. It is long and has reach, and he has learned to use it well from many hunting excursions, but is not particularly powerful. like all such weapons, it can be removed from Zhao's grip.
The weapon may also be thrown by Zhao in order to nail a target at a longer range, but as it is not a magical spear, and he has just the one, this is a limited-use move where he then has to go reclaim the spear with a lengthy walk to go pick it up again, every single time.

A sturdy club. This weapon is not significantly powerful but the use of a raw bludgeon can cause dents and cracks to appear in a foe's armor over time. with enough force, he can make someone's armor lose just a bit of it's toughness, though this has no effect against more esoteric or natural foes.

As a former fire nation Admiral, Zhao has an extensive knowledge in Naval combat, allowing him to pull impressive stratagems and pull off daring traps and movements on the fly. As an expert firebender, he also understands well many of the principles involved in bending, having been among the few besides Iroh to actually study and learn from other benders before his amnesia to hit - even if only to dominate them further. When it comes to questions about bending, or about moving a fleet, Zhao can consider himself one of the greatest experts.

As someone who had to earn his living on the ice, Zhao has learned many different skills to allow him to live in the frozen north. he understands how to carve bone and other materials at an artisan's level, how to hunt beasts, birds and fish in order to sustain himself and others, and how to expertly skin animals in order to make good use of the hide.

Zhao has learned much of the spirits form his time in the water tribe, with Iroh, and abroad, and he has gained a deep respect and understanding of them, learning many traditional dances, materials and rituals that can allow one to appease or appeal to them. He has a good understanding of how to avoid angerign spirits and can use these skills to help one in need if such is necessary - as well as to identify the need in the first place - despite his lack of strong spiritual powers of his own. He has, as a result, also learned how to create potent medicines that can cure all manner of ailments, spiritual or mundane.
