Character Name: Juneberry "Juno" Hawthorne

Character Source: OC

Starting Location: Opealon

Character Behavior:
Juneberry is a Daring Artificer. She can be effusive, intelligent, witty, but she mostly chooses to be a mild nuisance. Juneberry dares to be ambitious, successful, and wants more from this life than just survival. Her ultimate goal is to leave Multerra and return home.

For her rebelliousness, Juno truly believes obtaining knowledge is the only way out of Multerra. But to gain knowledge means traversing the universe, and that requires a lot more coin than the average Joe. So begins her quest for her her less-than-ultimate-but-still-pretty-good goal: become obscenely wealthy. Priorities in order.

Physical Description:

Juneberry looks, for nearly all intents and purposes, as a human-sized fairy. Her body is fairly thin and light, but she's put on some muscle from working in her father's mechanic shop.

Her skin is a light shade of purple, sclera a black with lavender irises and white pupils. Her hair's an off-white, thick and curly, dropping down to past her shoulders - her right side is usually locked with braids.

More often than not she has a series of colored swirls across her face, like mock freckles. They’re a result of her father’s magic, but he can remove them upon request. She likes to keep them on, though - it marks them as family.

Juneberry has, of course, pointed ears. She even sports pointed, sharp teeth. She's a very angularly shaped person. It's not often shown, but on her back are two very long, very thin scars; remnants of a surgery long past. You'd figure they're where her wings would be, if she had them.

Character History:

Once upon a time, Juneberry had a whole family.

She doesn't really remember much of her mom. She remembers being thrown into the air, being taught how to fly, a warm smile or a fuzzy embrace here and there. She can remember, faintly, the sound of a voice, the brush of a hand, little, tiny things. They had the same quirk. But she doesn't remember her mother that well.

What she knows is what her father told her. That her mother was the most beautiful, fearless, strong-willed person he knew. That the two of them used to work together. They were unstoppable.

Even in the beautiful utopia of the world that was Juno's home, poverty and desperation can creep in. By day, their family was a well-mannered florist and mech shop; but at night, the streets were prowled by only the hungriest of society. Their family did what they had to, to survive. Her father's voice always lost that sweet tone, at this part.

Juneberry was hardly 6 the day a group of common gang members stormed their hideout and almost killed them all; her mother was shot down trying to help her escape, and in the process, Juneberry lost her wings.

After that, the memories become clearer. Juneberry remembers the excruciating pain, the bandages, crying for days. Her father cradling her body. Moving far, far away. Hiding. Learning to craft. Learning to fight. Learning to kill, if she had to. Most of all, learning that there was no one to count on but yourself; there were no heroes, no angels, no laws.

Even after all the running, though, their past hunted them down, Juno and her father were caught while testing out a flying car of theirs. Her father turned and shoved her into an escape pod, slamming the eject button before she even had a chance to try and protest. When she landed, she was in Multerra.

Juneberry refuses to sit down and die. Most of all, she refuses to let her father wither away without the chance to say goodbye.

What starting Affinity does your character have? Thrifty

Abilities/Skills:

Soft Creation
  • Variable Creation (+200): Rank 1
    • Ongoing (+100)
    • Concentration (-50)
    • Activation (-100)
    • Limited (-50)
  • Total: (200) + (100) - (50) - (100) - (50) = 100 Essence
When given access to dirt, water, and light, Juneberry is able to induce the growth of magical plants. She can tailor the plant to have specific effects, with each type requiring more components the more powerful it is. Mostly, Juneberry infuses them with a life-giving ability, allowing them to power her mechanical creations.

Passiflora
  • Summoning (+300) Rank 1
    • Speed 3 (+200)
  • Total: (300)+(3*200) = 900
Passiflora is Juneberry's passion project. A mechanical horse, powered by the thriving bush inside of it, grown to such an extent it has begun to have a mind of its own. While Juneberry's other creations have some automation to them, Passiflora has life to her. Juneberry would die and kill for her. Passiflora, however, is still a flora machination, and needs access to sunlight and water once a day to remain functional at full capacity. Each day without it renders her weaker and more disoriented. After 3 days without either, she enters a comatose state, and will remain dormant until given sustenance.

Dragonfly Wings
  • Flight 3 (+200)
    • Ongoing (+100)
    • Removeable (-50)
  • Total: (200*3) + (100*3) - (3*50) = 750
Carefully crafted, Juneberry is in possession and love with a set of mechanical dragonfly wings. They beat rapidly, and are powered by one of her magical plants; it requires the same upkeep as any plant. The wings look as though they are made of glass, but are lightweight and strong, resistant to the (many) times Juno may have crashed with them. As a flora machination, the wings' plant need sunlight and water daily. They can go three days without recharge before being rendered fully incapacitated; if they are involved in a lot of work, such as a fight or running away at full speed, they can go about a day.

Mastery Skill: Solarpunk
  • Craftsmanship (50) Rank 5: Skilled Professional
    • (50*5) = 250

In her homeworld, all of the soaring skyscrapers and polished automatons were run by the grace and light of the sun. Sometimes, this came in the form of solar panels; in others, the energy was drawn from the plants that so flourished under its light. Juneberry apprenticed under her craftsman father in the art of flora-machinations; with her magic, Juneberry could grow the most enchanting plants, and her father constructed the machines that would use them to run.

Like father, like daughter. Juneberry took to the mechanical craft very quickly and was soon designing flora machinations of her own. Transportation and prosthetics were her specialty, and her passion. But Juneberry crafted anything and everything; art, weapons, utensils, pets. That was how she lived her life, until she was swept away. Dropped, destitute, in some forsaken island in Opaeleon's pale.

Now, in Multerra, she uses this soft creation to form the most wonderous machines, wrought with love and desperation, sure they will carry her safely home.

Hi there!

This mostly looks good, but there’s just a few things to go over.

First of all, could you just mention how Juneberry arrived in the crossroads in her backstory?

Soft creation is mostly fine, but just know that the functions of the plants will be kept to RP stuff, like powering machines, and that extra modifiers such as Damage or Debuff would be needed to give them proper combat abilities. Also, if you wish, you could probably put “Limited: Can only make plants” on there to save a bit of essence.

Passiflora is mostly good but I’m not 100% sure why the finite modifier is being applied. I assume that the magical plant inside needs to be replaced every so often. If that’s the case, could you specify how long it lasts?

Dragonfly wings are mostly good too, but as above, could you just specify how long a magical plant can last before needing to be replaced if that’s how you’re applying finite to it.

Finally, without the Gifted affinity, you can only have Master Skill ranks up to your Ability rank cap (5 in this case).

Oops, gotcha!

Juneberry entered into Multerra after a near-death experience on her homeworld. She and her father had hid away from gangs in a farther, metropolis corner of their utopia but still attracted some enemies. They attacked her while she and her father were in their little flying-car machine and had a dicey midair chase before her dad shoved her into an emergency eject pod, and when she landed, she was in Multerra.
Full disclosure is that Juneberry's arc is eventually going to center around the fact that while her family was good to her, they did get involved in crime and unscrupulous activities, and she has to reconcile that with the father and mother she loved.

The plants themselves have no combat ability, unless someone wants to be thrown into the plants; I wanted to limit her so that she has to work for combat ability (ie make weapons) if that makes sense? Does the Limited modifier still apply because she can't just magick up weapons? Just for clarification.

For Passiflora/Dragonfly wings, I applied Finite because the plant requires upkeep and care. Since they're plants I was going to make them work semi-similar to very needy plants, or like a jetpack with fuel, so they need sunlight and water every day. Without it the plants will wilt and, if not die, would be unable to power their machines.

Understood! I'll modify the Master Skill to Rank 5.

Hey again!

The Limited is applied to variable creation because it can only create one kind thing (plants, in this case) instead of being able to create essentially anything as it typically would.

As for your Finite modifiers, I’m going to say that they don’t exhaust themselves frequently enough to qualify for Finite. For Finite, the ability needs to be reloaded/recharged/etc at least once per ‘scene’.

Understood! I'll take off the Finite and I've applied the Limited. I had to adjust my Soft Creation to be Variable Creation Rank 1 due to the increased cost of the Passiflora and Dragon Wings, so the math changed. Anything else I should adjust?
