Omnium Rerum Principia Parva Sunt- The beginnings of all things are small.’

I was weary from my travels as I got up, feeling my back hurt from sitting a bit too long. The awful stench of cigarettes trickled off my blue armor, making it a bit harder to concentrate from the growing headache I was nursing.

It wasn’t the person smoking’s fault, but the smell wavering served only to make things worse. Before I got up to yell at the man smoking nearby and smash the white thing hanging out of the man’s mouth, A man dressed in the oddest clothing I’ve ever seen opened the door with a brief clearing of his throat.

What did this man want with me?

Before I could say a thing, the man looked up and looked into my eyes as he tried to gauge who he was talking to, as if he knew he was talking to the right man.

“"Tu es unus notus avattalion, vox?” The man spoke in literal pieces of my language that was from long ago.

I was suddenly interested in what this man had to say, even though I couldn’t dismiss the strange appearance of the stranger in front of me.

Before I could pick up my gladius to interrogate the said man, he handed me a letter. Yet, I stopped and reacted back to the man who called himself a historian.

“Quomodo haec res latine dicitur? Vatallion hissed anxiously, as he still wasn’t sure this envelope had something dangerous.

The man was a storied professor and historian of his day who looked up and spoke both languages fluently.

“I studied the old tongue of Latin along with English.”
("Linguam latinam veterem cum anglica studui.”)

I swore he was almost legit as I opened the envelope eying the strange language it had inside.

I was forced to embrace English as the common language here in this world as I at least could piece together some of the words in the letter to me.

Professor Humph Baxter waited for me to piece out the English letter before blinking and saying again. “I saw you in the death game on television. You are the perfect person for this!”

The man frowned as I looked confused once again and debated “Oh sorry, I should translate for you.”

"Ego te vidi in televisione ludi mortis. Perfectus es homo propter hoc!”

“I don’t think I did that good, to be honest.” The Ex-Legatus figured the letter “Tell me, Professor, what are you here for?”

The professor looked up “Oh, you think this is a setup of some kind, right? Well, I assure you this is no setup. This place is a legend. I’m not sure if it’s real or not, but that’s why you are here to help me! The professor moved his hand and blew off a dusty book about the Revocare Republic.

I swore the pages were so dusty that I accidentally coughed on some particles flying in the air.
Not sure what to expect, I looked over at the stranger. The historian was quite sure of himself as he started to list facts about this new empire that sounded intriguing to me.

“You have a map of the place, stranger?” I tried to understand if this place was a myth or real.

Quodque initium novum alio initio finito evenit- Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.

Another Latin quote and another thought popped into my mind about the adventure ahead. Yet the historian was leaving me in the dark about this hidden place. Why was it hidden? Why did it need to be revealed to the entire world?

I didn’t even know if this place existed yet, but I’d play along with this man to gain his trust for now.

Once more the historian stood in place shaking the journal of his thoughts about this new location when suddenly, a map fell out.

“Huh, that’s where I left that map after all.” The historian laughed, mostly in awkward silence in front of me.
I stared at him, unknowingly glaring at him to get on with things.

The historian blinked and then turned “Oh, right. Hold on.” He took his time picking up his book and opening it to where the map’s last location showed him.

He then set the map and unfolded it on the table right next to me. Professor Baxter sat with the map as I walked over to the map’s location now interested in what he had to say.

In Latin, the professor translated to me that the location was filled with ancient wonders and even riches among many more things. I stared to get intrigued in what the good professor had to offer me “Alright, Professor I’m in. But what must we pack in preparation for the long road ahead?

Humph looked at me for a second and nodded “Ah good question, Vatallion. Each of us will have an intricate map of the area, supplies for a long trip and our equipment just in case something goes wrong. By chance, have you used a bow with arrows and a spear before?

Vatallion blinked and nodded in familiarity “You must translate in Latin for me, Professor but I understand what you are going on about. This must be the english equivalents of what I’m saying right?”

The man simply nodded “Yes, Vatallion, this is what I am talking about.”

The man seemed to have me over for a long night of planning for the long journey head. “Vatallion, do you need a bed? The trip is going to take a few day to prepare for.”

Vatallion turned to the professor “No, you don’t need to prepare a bed for me, it’s fine. I can find my own preparations.”

The professor stared back “Alright, but I can’t take “no” for a answer so it’s alright if you sleep on a bed in the back for a few.”

The Ex-Legatus looked back and nodded, walking to his “bed” area, and sat on it. It was far comfier than the bedding in Rome and that was fancy.

I sat on the bed with some of the maps and information about the new potential empire to search for. The professor welcomed input on what I had to share.
But I was now interested in the wonders of this ancient but new empire area. I asked for information and the professor was eager to share what he knew about the area and what might go on.

However, there were a few key things Professor Baxter didn’t touch on, and that made me suspicious. I’d mention my worries tomorrow since the next day was a new one.

I sat on the bed, looking out at the luxurious window sides in the professor’s own apartment as I watched the rain pour down the windows. Tomorrow was possibly going to be an adventure that might be bigger than any one of us could have imagined. The rain was calming as it pattered the window but I couldn’t help but feel like I was uncomfortable with the sight of the desk lamp the professor kept next to his guest bedroom. I still wasn’t used to the sight of lightning stuffed into a small shape like so.

So I found myself tossing and turning even on the comfortable bed, even after slipping off the Legatus armor I was so used to wearing for years at a time, even after I came here into this world.

Pacing the room didn’t exactly help the time pass by any farther. I don’t know why, but this desk lamp seemed so maliciously out of place in this luxurious room. I couldn’t help but watch shadows come and go on the walls but I blinked when I clinked my Gladius on the light device.

Professor Baxter heard a clunk on the wall. “Vatallion, is everything ok?” as he briefly knocked on the door for a second.

The Legate looked up “I don’t understand, how can lightning be contained in a lamp so bright… not in the skies like I’m used to?”

The historian looked up thoughtfully “Oh, this light is only part of modern technology that allows our world to function and to see in the darkness. Please, get some sleep. “

The professor handed Vatallion some coffee and smiled “Be ready for tomorrow, for tomorrow we carve our mark into history!”

As the rain started to calm down, and the blue skies showed the sun peeking out, Vatallion finally forced himself to sleep.

Dreams of Roman camps and desk lamps merged together as wacky dreams made the Legate debate his own thoughts while he slept.

Sooner than later, hours passed and the sun peeked its head into the sky. The Roman Commander was already up, polished his Legate armor and grabbed the weapons all packed up into a various meticulous order.

The professor who was already sitting in a chair, in his comfortable attire, looked back. “Are you ready for history in the making, Commander?”

Vatallion, after sleeping, finally made a good reason to sit down and relax and nodded. “Are you sure about this Professor? What if this empire was just wanting to be left alone?

The professor, already thinking of ancient artifacts and riches they could gain from this encounter, looked up.

The Roman commander was speaking from a viewpoint of his own timelines of Rome, inwardly shuddering at the thoughts of people messing with old structures he’d spent decades building with his own two hands, fighting to protect with Legionaries of his own.

Baxter, firmly stuck in his own words “I understand your commitment to protecting ancient history, much like me, but humanity must know about this empire! It might be lost forever!”

Vatallion, seeing that the professor was that stubborn in his viewpoint, finally looked at him “Alright, but we must tread carefully, we don’t even know what this empire hides in the long run.”

He turned, pointing to a few key points on the map, and informed Baxter that there was more of a problem then they thought.

“These warriors know what they are doing and they are well informed of any intruders planning on moving on their empire like my concerns earlier.”

The professor blinked “How do you know this, Vatallion?”

“Very simple, sir, I am simply thinking of the empire's past and what I would do if I took the place of the ruler of that empire myself.”

“Or simply put, stepping into another's position themselves.”

Baxter replied “Thank you for putting your military strategy into my own expertise as well. This could help us in the long run, Vatallion. How about we come to a compromise? Maybe instead of conquesting the city, cooperation with the empire would be better.

Vatallion could see the professor’s point and came to a conclusion.

As they packed their bags, Vatallion could see their goal coming to a head.
The professor had simply rented a jeep big enough for the Roman commander and himself for safe travel toward this ancient empire.
After all, they weren’t going to walk there in hours, right? Vatallion would have gladly done this himself, because this is the way he did things back in Rome, but Baxtor insisted. Vallation looked at the horseless chariot that awaited him and took a deep breath, pinching his forehead and slipped inside onto the leather seating while the professor sat inside as well.

The professor turned on the engine and it made the Roman Legate jump from the quick rumble of the engine under his seat.

“What was THAT?!”

The professor sighed “That, Vatallion is an engine, another modern wonder that helps this car move us toward our destination instead of walking miles upon miles. However, we have many miles of walking later on our trip once we get closer.

The professor turned on some jams and music filled both Vatallion’s and Baxter’s ears as they couldn’t help but do a jam session together.
Vatallion was silent, completing his thoughts after the professor turned down the music “Penny for your thoughts, Vatallion?”

The Legate frowned, his mouth turned to a sigh “I’m still not used to these modern comforts you guys take for granted everyday. Maybe what I learn from this empire will calm my mind some.”

The professor smiled and turned “Vatallion, maybe you’d appreciate this little device I packed in my bag.” He stopped the jeep and dug through the duffel bag and finally found a box-like device.

Baxter nodded “This is what we call a smartphone! It allows us to capture images, transmit information instantly and more!”

The man stopped “What? This is impressive. Truly an innovation in what modern technology can offer me!”

Baxter nodded “Soon you’ll learn about a lot more as soon as we get closer.”

After a few hours or so of studying maps for traps, locations and various points of the empire, the professor coughed and got the Roman commander’s attention from what he was studying.

Vatallion looked up “What’s up, Professor?”

The professor stretched for a second and nodded “We are here.”

This was the defining moment of their trip. This is the day they would go down in history as the first people to make contact with this lost empire.

Vatallion looked up at the forests with the professor, perhaps they’d meet up with other people over time.

Even though the Roman Legate held secrets of his own, he meant to keep to himself that Professor Baxter could only go so far with him before he had to go out on his own. But he had his promises to the man and he would not betray that trust.

The soldier grabbed instinctively for the gladius on his best as the professor eyed the thick grasses of the forest that hid any traces and clues of the hidden empire.

“Let me cut down our obstacles, it seems like this would be faster in the long run.”

The Legatus kept looking as he pushed the thick bushes aside as he cut branches ahead, as he swore he was being watched by some sort of creatures hidden from a distance away, there were skitters of feet in the distance but they kept away at the moment.

The professor gritted his teeth as he pushed forward with Vatallion taking the lead. Seconds later, a strange leaf covered trap almost snapped up a blissfully unaware Baxtor as the man tripped on a branch activating the trap.

The noise made Vatallion jump and turn towards the trap set “Be careful–!”

The professor muttered under his breath as he brushed off the leaves and dirt from his explorer outfit, glaring at the secretly hidden trigger underneath. “I’ve seen worse,” he muttered, examining the trap with renewed interest. Within a few minutes, the professor was able to disable the trigger on the trap. “See? I know what i’m doing, Vatallion!”

Still the Roman Legate was on guard, hearing frequent and closer sounds from where they were located. Yet the old professor was more occupied with the ancient and wondrous traps that the Reporcure empire came up with to protect what was left of their own empire from intruders.

As both of them kept walking, Vatallion looked around only to come upon an ancient tree all overgrown and twisted with ancient symbols that seemed to be hastily scribbled on it in a different language to warn intruders to turn back now if they hadn’t already been scared off by other traps.

As they navigated through a particularly thick patch of underbrush, they stumbled upon a small clearing. In the center of the clearing stood a massive tree, its trunk twisted and gnarled like the limbs of some ancient, diseased creature. Vatallion raised his sword warily, unsure what to expect. The professor, however, seemed more fascinated by the tree than anything else.

"This tree..." he muttered, running his fingers over the bark. "It's ancient. Perhaps older than any living being in this forest." He examined the base of the tree, finding strange carvings and markings etched into its trunk. "These symbols... they look familiar."

It prompted Vatallion to step forward, letting Baxter handle the strange details about the ancient symbols possibly belonging to the Reportore empire and the professor in his excitement began to take pictures of the symbols that were on the tree.

The Legate sighed and made sure there were no other problems, even though this forest seemed oddly quiet for being a nice forest, however. Where was the..

There was a rustling in the bushes behind them and before they could react, a group of creatures leapt out. They were like apes, but with a strange glowing aura around them. Their eyes were filled with an otherworldly intelligence. The leader of the group snarled at them, baring long, sharp fangs.

Vatallion's instincts took over as he drew his sword, readying for battle. Beside him, Professor Baxter cursed under his breath, scrambling to find a safe spot behind the legate. The creatures hissed and snapped at them, their claws leaving glowing marks on the ground. The fight was intense and brutal, with the creatures displaying surprising agility and strength.

The professor muttered something out loud “Shit”..

The apes found themselves fighting a lone Roman soldier as the professor found himself almost hightailing himself backwards toward the ancient tree.

The apes found themselves fighting a lone Roman soldier as the professor found himself almost hightailing himself backwards toward the ancient tree.

"You fools!" the old man shouted, trying to distract the beasts from their prey. "Don't you know who you're messing with?! This is Vatallion! The conqueror of empires!!"

The apes seemed momentarily confused, their glowing eyes darting between the professor and the legate. Vatallion took advantage of their confusion, landing a powerful blow on one of the creatures, sending it flying through the air. Another creature leapt at him, only to be deflected by his mighty sword. The battle raged on, with the legate and the professor working together to drive back the advancing apes.

Meanwhile, the ancient tree behind them seemed to pulse with energy, its leaves rustling as if in response to the conflict. The professor felt a strange tingling sensation in his fingers, as if the tree itself was trying to communicate with him. As he fought, he could sense the tree's power growing stronger, drawing strength from the battle raging before it.

The apes, despite their superior numbers, were no match for Vatallion and the professor's combined efforts. The old man continued to distract them with his words, while the legate methodically took them down one by one. Soon, the clearing was littered with the corpses of the glowing apes.

As the last of the creatures lay dying at their feet, the ancient tree behind them let out a deafening groan. The ground shook violently, and cracks formed in the earth. Vines snaked out from the tree, wrapping themselves around the bodies of the fallen apes. The tree seemed to be absorbing their essence, growing stronger with each passing moment.

Professor Baxter stepped forward, his eyes wide with wonder. "This... this is incredible! The tree is a living being! A being of immense power and knowledge!" He reached out, touching the trunk as if it were a living creature. "And it has chosen to ally itself with us!"

Vatallion’s eyes widened in shock, not sure what to believe anymore. He’d never seen such a wonder before.

The ancient tree continued to grow larger and more powerful, its roots spreading outward, wrapping themselves around the trunks of nearby trees. The canopy overhead grew thicker, blocking out the sunlight, creating a dark, ethereal forest within the clearing. The air grew thick with the scent of earth and leaves, and a sense of awe and respect filled the legate.

"This is truly a wondrous sight," he said, kneeling before the tree, head bowed in reverence. "What powers does the tree possess? And what does it seek in allying itself with us?"

Professor Baxter looked up at the massive tree, his eyes shining with excitement. "The tree is ancient, older than any civilization that has ever existed. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the birth and death of countless species. It is a repository of knowledge, a living library of the history of this world."

He paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. "As for what it seeks in allying itself with us, I cannot say for certain. But I believe it sees potential in us, Vatallion. You are a great warrior, and your deeds have earned you respect across the realms. And I am a scholar, a seeker of truth. Together, we may be able to unlock the secrets that the tree holds, and use that knowledge to bring peace and prosperity to this world."

For once, this confused Vatallion as he’d seen about everything at this point even living out in space. “Professor, are you sure we can trust this ancient magic tree? As far as I know, the gods of this realm hadn’t blessed us yet. But something about this tree contained ancient symbols of the lost civilization and the Legate was baffled and torn between his old duty to a dead civilization only a few select men knew and respected. He squeezed his fist. “My alliance is to that of Rome and even if… it is dead to some people, it is not dead in my heart.”

The Professor looked back “I respect your dedication, Vatallion but the Rome you knew is gone, it’s as dead as the creature you defeated in the last Carnival Rosa. He had to rip the bandaid off and be honest to the Roman Legatus now or risk losing the man’s potential allyship.

Those words stung him hard into his heart. The only two men holding onto memories of the Roman empire, including him and frustration almost mounted at his own face. He couldn’t bring himself to say the name of the man’s name he personality mentored and took the weight.

He didn’t know if that man was even still alive here.

Baxter knew his choice but he himself didn’t know Vatallion’s own choices would shape his destiny as well.

The Professor perhaps confused and quiet, didn’t quite know Vatallion’s student “The Centurion you once knew is dead but all hope is not lost in remembering Rome.”

Vatallion, now struck with pangs of anger, saw Baxter bluish. “How did you know of Marius, my centurion!”

It felt that Vatallion himself too was grieving, the loss of his men to history and the loss of Marius to the death of Rome. He gritted his teeth and kneeled down, silently mourning the loss of the past. He stabbed his gladius into the ground, feeling the pain. As if the forest felt the pain with him, the Legetus almost regretted coming here on this journey to this ancient empire.

But as things were, the gods finally blessed him.

Within seconds, the buzzing noise of the strange box went off. Vatallion in the midst of grieving, pushed up and blinked "Baxter, the box is buzzing. What does that mean?"

Baxter looked up "Oh? The smartphone?" "What's it telling you?"

Vatallion couldn't believe his eyes. A ship carrying a group of slaves was captured above. Someone had checked the database and found someone by the name of Marius in the arena fights earlier.

Baxter's eyes widened at the revelation. "Marius alive? This is both astonishing and troubling news. Vatallion, fueled by a mix of emotions, nodded. "We must act quickly. Marius deserves his freedom, and we cannot allow the horrors of slavery to persist. Rome may be gone, but its ideals live on in us."

Vatallion, with new hope in his eyes, squeezed his fists and smiled, a new fire burned within his hearts to keep Rome’s ideals alive somehow but he had to find Marius first. But how to get onto the spaceship without a clear connection?
