Reigen’s past is of little note. He did well in school and graduated without a hitch. After saving up money, he left his job to set up a new business: the “Spirits and Such Consultation Office”. He proclaims to be a powerful psychic who exorcises spirits (in truth, he never had any powers), but still offers life advice and services to relieve his customers.
One day, a boy named Shigeo Kageyama arrived at Reigen’s office. He said that he was an esper with trouble controlling his powers, and he wanted advice from another esper like him. Despite the man’s total lack of faith in that claim, he let the boy in and made up some advice: “Being psychic doesn’t define who you are. It’s just a part of being a human, as much as you are fast or book smart. In the end, what really matters is kindness.” The young Mob was moved by his speech. Reigen thought it would end at that.
However, when a hot cup of tea was spilled, it started floating in midair, thanks to Mob’s telekinesis. Reigen couldn’t believe what he was seeing: the kid really does have psychic powers! Asked if he could see and exorcise ghosts, the boy simply nodded. From that day on, Mob’s internship at the business began, with Reigen acting as a sort of mentor.
