It was a lovely night at the clinic. The stars were out, and Peter and Daisy were out on the newly built porch. Peter was still in his work outfit, a white collared shirt and dark slacks, along with sneakers. Daisy, meanwhile, was in an orange T-shirt and maroon short shorts. At the moment, Peter was strumming lazily at a guitar, singing a song he was sure he heard before. It was a quiet moment, where they were just enjoying spending time together.

”Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer do
I’m half crazy all for the love of you”

Daisy was scrolling through Instagram next to him, listening gently to Peter pluck at his guitar. Doc had given him the guitar, insisting that it was important that he have hobbies. As it turned out, Peter quite liked playing the guitar.

“It won’t be a stylish marriage
I can’t afford a carriage
But you look sweet
Upon the seat
Of a bicycle made for two”

Daisy smirked. “You know that’s about killer robots now, right?”

Peter snickered, still lazily strumming. “Now what does that mean?”

“No, I’m serious,” Daisy insisted, “There was this movie- Well, maybe I should start with the computer. Let me look it up.”

Peter kept strumming as Daisy searched the Medium.

“Yeah, here it is. This is an Earth thing. In 1961, some people programmed a computer to play music for the first time in Earth history. It was that song you’re singing.”

Peter squinted. “And then that computer went on a killing spree?”

“Nah, that was a movie. HAL 9000. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if it made it into the Crossroads, it’s a pretty popular movie.”

“Hm.” Peter sighed. “Well, that’s not why I was singing the song.”

Daisy smiled. “You just like it?”

“Well, it has your name in it,” Peter says, “Your name tastes sweet on my tongue.”

Daisy gasped and stared at Peter. “Did you practice that line?”

Peter shook his head with a big shit-eating grin. “Just came out.”

“Well, mister,” Daisy said with a sensual smirk, “That was a pretty good line.”

Peter smirked back, putting aside his guitar. “Well, what are you gonna do about it?”

“I might have to reward you,” Daisy said, licking her lips.

“Rule 1 of the porch!” Doc shouted from inside the clinic, “No making out!”

The couple groaned. Peter stood up and offered his hand to Daisy. Daisy raised an eyebrow, and took it.

“Shall we retire to my room, my lady?”

“We shall,” Daisy giggled.

The young couple scampered into the clinic. Meanwhile, Doc seriously considered having a motel built somewhere near his premises.

“So, like,” Daisy started to ask. She thoughtfully sucked on her little wooden spoon of its mint chocolate ice cream before placing it back in her little cup. “You’re never going to see your family?”

Peter flinched at the question. The couple had been eating ice cream in the nearby park. The day was nice, the weather was a little cloudy but otherwise nice. It was a great date. Until now.

“Where’s this coming from?” Peter asked.

Daisy shrugged. “I dunno. Just wondering.”

Peter swallowed hard. “I dunno. Probably not.”

“Why not?” Daisy sucked on her spoon again.

Peter shrugged again. His body language was clear. He didn’t want to speak about it.

Daisy didn’t care.

“Don’t you think they want to see you?”

Peter sighed. He licked his ice cream cone. “Not really.”

“Why not?”

Peter gave Daisy a bitter glance.

“You’re not gonna let this go, huh?”

“Not this time, no.”

“Hm.”

Peter sighed. His stance shrank visibly, and he looked to the side.

“I don’t know, Daize,” Peter sighed, “Last time I saw them… I was a monster.”

“You’re not a monster,” Daisy said, in the tone you use where you’re kinda getting tired of saying it.

“No, but I was,” Peter sighed, “I… drank the blood of another. Intentionally. To harm him. And then I ran. I… don’t know. I just kind of…”

Peter rubbed his hair frustratedly. “I don’t feel like talking about it.”

Daisy nodded. “I know, but you have to.”

“Why do I have to?”

“Because I can see it bugging you.” Daisy took another lick of her mint chocolate chip. “Whenever you see a family pass by. Or whenever you use your water magic. And I hear it too, every time you tell a story about one of your brothers. Not two minutes ago, you wistfully sighed because you saw a dad pick up after his son.”

“Just because I miss them doesn’t mean I can talk to them,” Peter groaned, “I’m not… I’m not ready.”

“And you’ll never be,” Daisy retorted, “Face it, pretty boy, you’re too wrapped up in guilt about this - not commenting on whether or not you should, just saying you’ll never be ready.”

“So then I guess I’m never seeing them again.”

Daisy looked at Peter earnestly. Peter glared back.

“I just think it would be good for you. Regardless of whether you know it or not, you want it.”

“What I want is to never have become a vampire in the first place,” Peter snarled, “What I want is to never have met Walden Arbridge. What I want is my father-”

Peter stopped himself, noticing his blood rise. He took in a deep breath, then swallowed hard.

“But I don’t always get what I want.”

Daisy licked pensively. There was a brief pause in what she wanted to say.

“You got me.”

Peter looked at her.

“So sometimes you get what you want,” Daisy noted, “Even if you really, really fumble the bag. I mean, you straight up ran away when we first kissed, remember?”

Peter groaned again, this time in embarrassment. “...yes.”

“So. We’ve established that even when you royally mess up, including wooing a goddamn princess,” Daisy continued, “Sometimes you get what you want.”

“...yes.”

“And what you want more than anything right now is to reconnect with your family.”

“...”

“Say yes.”

“...yes.”

“So.. you’ll call them?”

“They don’t have phones. I’ll write them.”

“They don’t have phones?” Daisy exclaimed.

“They don’t have phones,” Peter said with a chuckle.

“Dude, I’m from a medieval fairy tale kingdom and I STILL had a phone!”

Peter laughed as he pulled in Daisy, who snuggled up against the vampire.

Peter Pellbrook stood at the doorway of his old home. He was tightly gripping a bouquet of flowers in one hand, a cake in the other. It had been quite the hassle getting here, his old home being a garlic farm. At the very least, the Pellbrooks had the decency to take down all the garlic usually hanging around the house. That would have really made his entrance difficult.

Daisy was next to him. After all, the secondary point of the dinner was to introduce her to the family. She squirmed, hanging onto his arm, a little nervous.

Dr. McNinja was in the back, parking the car in the stables. He would join them soon.

Peter cleared his throat and knocked on the door. There was some shouting from inside, mostly from his mother Ariel. The door swung open. Garrick Pellbrook stared at Peter from behind the doorway. He had a shit-eating grin on his face.

“So I’ve been told,” Garrick said, “that vampires can’t enter houses without express permission.”

Daisy watched Peter nervously, but the Pellbrook boy recognized this as a good sign. Garrick was already messing with him.

“Let me in, shithead,” Peter smirked.

“Mm,” Garrick said, feigning consideration, “I dunno. Is that how you speak to someone who’s deciding whether or not you’re invited-”

“Come in, Peter!” Blythe called from behind Garrick. She had a wide grin, revealing two fangs.

“Agh- Dammit, Blythe!” Garrick cursed as Peter shoved past him. Peter stuck out his tongue at his younger brother as he entered the house.

Peter wasn’t sure what to expect from his family. Fear? Apprehension? Straight-up trying to murder him? He had no idea how his family had fared since his sudden departure. What changes had they gone through?

He surely wasn’t expecting a welcome.

Peter leaned back in surprise. There was an uproar as all the Pellbrook children pretty instantly stopped what they were doing to shout and rush Peter, giving him hugs. Oswin hugged Peter quietly, staying there for a good while. Blythe joined him, taking the other side of the vampire.

“What took you so long, asshole?” Aldrich chuckled with a wide smile, ruffling Peter’s orange hair.

Peter grinned back, nervously happy. “I was busy?”

“Oh, now you’re too busy for your family?” Garrick snapped. He couldn’t hide his joy with his angry tone.

Daisy, meanwhile, was staying outside. She sheepishly watched the whole scene. She knew Peter would be happy to see his family again, but now the truly difficult part: making a good impression.

On cue, the Pellbrook children all turned around and stared at Daisy. They simultaneously turned to Peter.

“Right,” Peter said, clearing his throat, “This is my girlfriend. Daisy.”

There was an utter lack of reaction for a good half a minute. The Pellbrooks boys continued to switch their gazes between Peter and Daisy. Blythe just held her stare with Daisy, who waved sheepishly.

“Nice to meet you,” Daisy finally said, “I’ve heard so much about you guys.”

Garrick’s jaw dropped. “Oh my Arbiters you actually got a girlfriend.”

Aldrich slapped Garrick over the head, then started pulling at his siblings to clear the way. “Uh… hello, Daisy. Sorry about that. Uh…”

He turned to the interior of the house. “Mama! We need an extra place! Peter brought a girlfriend!”

There was a sudden clatter of pots. “Peter brought a WHAT?!”

Daisy squinted at Peter. “You didn’t tell them I was coming?”

Peter paled at the reaction. “Well… I thought…”

“Come in!” Aldrich said, “Come in, come in.”

“Don’t mind if I do!” Dr. McNinja said, entering the building.

The children all yelped in surprise at Doc’s sudden appearance, then all started cheering and whooping. Dr. McNinja had come around a few times before, and he always brought sweets for the children to share. And honestly, even the teenagers weren’t too proud to be begging for chocolates from their doctor. Dr. McNinja accordingly whooped and threw some chocolate bars into the air, leaving the children to scramble for them. Peter retreated to Daisy.

Daisy smirked as she finally entered the house. “They’re… a lot.”

Peter sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. “So they are.”

“I can’t believe you didn’t tell them I was coming.”

“Well, I dunno, I thought it’d be a nice surprise!” Peter said.

“Hm,” Daisy said, slightly annoyed. But she suppressed it. This was Peter’s day.

The inside of the Pellbrook home was about as Daisy expected. It was the largest shack she had ever seen. The wood was rotting and gray, but the light from the rickety chandelier was orange and warm. There were numerous cupboards and dressers lining the walls, all ancient and falling apart. At the center of the room, there was a carpet, on top of which lay a ten-foot-long wooden table. It looked to be made of scrapwood rather than actual carpentry materials. There was the unavoidable feeling of living inside a giant rotting tree, one with many hallways leading up to various rooms.

Then it was the moment of truth. Ariel Pellbrook emerged from the kitchen, rubbing her hands on her apron. She gave a polite grin to Doc, then turned to Peter. Her expression was complicated as she studied his face. Peter swallowed hard as the other children went silent (Aldrich slapping all of them to do so). He waved.

“Hi, Mama,” Peter finally said, “I’m home.”

Ariel pursed her lips for a bit, then nodded quietly. She turned to Daisy.

“My, what a pretty young thing you are,” Ariel said, approaching her and shaking her hand, “It’s so nice to meet you. I’m Ariel Pellbrook. Sorry for the mess.”

“Oh, not at all,” Daisy said politely, “Nice to meet you, Mrs. Pellbrook. I’m Daisy Sarasa.”

Ariel gave her another warm smile, before turning to Peter. She wordlessly gripped Peter’s shoulders, rubbing them slightly with her thumbs. She then met Peter’s eyes, staring into them. Perhaps she was now noticing how different they looked.

“Well,” Ariel finally said, “Let’s eat.”

Everyone released the breaths they were holding. The children started making noise again, Oswin in particular whining that Garrick had taken much more chocolate than him. Ariel scolded the children for thinking about chocolate before dinner as the children all stashed their sweets in their various dressers.

“I said bring out the food!” Ariel shouted. The Pellbrooks all scattered into the kitchen, bringing out various plates of steaming food.

Ariel had really gone all out - this was a remarkable feast. There was a large platter with braised turkey, each still sizzling with grease. There were two colossal bowls overflowing with spaghetti and meatballs, and two large bowls full of salads with tomatoes. While the food wasn’t particularly appealing in any sense, the sheer amount of it could not be overstated. Ariel nodded, clearly proud of the display. After all, this was more than she could probably afford.

“Well, everyone take a seat,” she said. She waved her hand, and a pitcher of water flew out of nowhere and into her hand. She set it down in the middle, waving her hand again to summon another pitcher, this one full of lemonade.

The children all took their usual seats. Doc sat shortly afterwards. Peter stared at his chair, where he used to always sit, at the end of the table - it had been left there, even though he was gone. Peter swallowed hard and sat down. Daisy followed suit. The boys started serving themselves, levitating lemonade from the pitchers into their cups.

“So how’re things?” Doc asked Ariel, serving himself some turkey.

Ariel shrugged. “Same old. Bad season this year. And bandits keep attacking us.”

“Aldrich bet Garrick five gold he couldn’t spear three bandits at once,” Blythe reported.

“And I used that five gold to buy me a nice watch,” Garrick announced, showing off his brand new digital watch. It was an old, old model, and out of battery.

“It’s out of battery,” Peter noted.

“Yeah? So?”

Blythe grinned again. “Oh, and Oswin took me snow-sledding on the hill by the creek!”

“Snow? In this time of fall?” Daisy asked, mostly to herself.

Oswin cleared his throat. It was easy to miss before, but he was clearly having a hard time meeting the gaze of the pretty girl.

“I have… ice powers?” Oswin finally managed to say, his voice cracking a little.

Garrick snickered. “Oswin, are you scared of the giiiirl?”

“Sh-Shut up!”

Aldrich jammed his fork into his spaghetti. “Yeah, shut up, Garrick. Where’s your girlfriend?”

Garrick threw a meatball at Aldrich with magic, who caught it out of the air with a wave of his fingers. Tomato sauce dripped everywhere. Daisy recoiled, but Peter managed to catch the droplets out of the air before it landed on her. Doc, somehow, was entirely unaffected.

“I thought they had water magic?” Daisy muttered to Peter.

“There’s water in meatballs,” Peter whispered back.

“Can you eat food, actually?” Oswin asked Peter.

“Oh yeah,” Peter nodded, “I just need blood to survive, but I can eat all I like. As long as there’s no garlic.”

“I didn’t put garlic in anything,” Ariel said.

Peter nodded. “Uh, thanks.”

“So what’s that like?” Oswin asked, his eyes wide, “Drinking blood?”

“Uh, you know? Freaky at first. It goes in through my cheeks too, so it’s weird. But you get used to it. It’s like drinking a salty soup at this point.”

Aldrich piped up, “And you’re sticking to the ‘vegetarian’ diet? No people?”

Peter nodded. “Good thing about working at a medical clinic, Doc gets access to charity organizations. So only donated blood for me.”

“Good,” Aldrich said, “It’d be a pity to kill you when you finally deign to visit us.”

The table laughed. Daisy chuckled nervously along with them.

“So, Daisy,” Ariel said, her eyes piercing, “How’d you and Peter meet?”

Doc watched them, a little worried. The Pellbrook children all stared at Daisy eagerly. Peter apologetically pursed his lips and looked at her as well.

“Well,” Daisy started, “It was… on an adventure.”

“Ooh, you go on adventures?” Blythe chanted.

Ariel gave Doc an inquisitive look. Doc shrugged. “Yeah, they’ve been happening more than we’d like, actually.”

“But not so much that it’s bad for us!” Peter added.

Doc nodded. “Yeah. Not that much.”

“Well, what kind of adventure was it?” Aldrich asked.

Daisy jammed her tongue into her cheek, looking at Peter nervously. Peter nodded encouragingly. Daisy inhaled deeply and nodded.

“Well, we met a couple times while following some leads on a dangerous vigilante called the Punisher,” Daisy said, “He was hunting a criminal organization called the Lollipop Guild. And uh… we kinda just… got along?”

“And you got the Punisher?” Garrick asked.

“He’s still out there,” Peter said grimly, “We’re… still working on the case.”

Ariel, this whole time, was just watching Peter, even as she ate. She finally spoke up.

“So these are dangerous adventures you go on, eh, Doctor?”

Doc stopped mid-chew and swallowed hard. “Uh… sometimes!”

“And you think that’s fine?”

Doc leaned in. “I try to keep Peter away from the adventures. His job is to help me run the clinic, after all, not get into fights.”

“And he can do that?”

“He can,” Doc said, “Both, that is. I’d never want anyone else watching my back.”

Ariel nodded. If she had any real complaints about endangering children, she’d be a hypocrite. So she turned back to Daisy.

“And what do you do, Daisy?”

“I’m a student at the AU - that is, the University of Arcadia,” Daisy replied, “I’m studying xenobotany?”

“And what’s that?”

“It’s the study of plants from other worlds,” Daisy explained, “Basically, weird botany.”

“And that leads to good careers?”

“Well,” Daisy said, “Um… I’m actually not that focused on my career right now.”

“Daisy helps around the clinic as well,” Doc helpfully added, “She can make bioweapons that power you up.”

Ariel tipped her head. “You don’t say?”

Daisy nodded. “I… could show you some samples later. After dinner.”

Daisy didn’t know it, but offering Ariel further powers to assist in self-defense was actually the way to go. Ariel nodded approvingly. For the first time, she looked down at her food and focused on eating.

“How long you been dating?” Aldrich picked up the conversation.

“Give or take a year,” Peter answered. Daisy nodded.

“And when you getting married?”

Daisy choked on her food as she watched for Peter’s response. Peter, however, was expecting it.

“We haven’t really talked about it,” Peter said, “It’s a little different in Arcadia. You date for a while before you even consider getting married.”

Peter turned to Daisy. “They’re used to getting married right away out here. In arranged marriages.”

Daisy tilted her head up in understanding. “I see.”

“They,” Ariel noted.

“Hm?”

“You said they.”

Peter shrugged. “I guess I did.”

“So you ain’t one of us anymore?”

Peter shuffled uncomfortably. “I was just explaining-”

“Hmph,” Ariel grunted, returning to her food.

The table was silent for a minute. The silence hung heavy in the air, like a weight pressing on your shoulders.

Peter finally broke the silence. “This is good pasta, Mama.”

Everyone grunted affirmatively. Daisy elbowed Peter subtly, gesturing at the cake.

“Oh yeah, and uh, we brought cake for dessert,” Peter followed up.

Ariel’s eyes twinkled a little. “Cake?”

The night was cold, but Peter didn’t feel it. Daisy, however, was shivering, despite wearing a thick fur coat. They stood silently for a while.

“Hey Dad,” Peter finally said, “I’m home.”

In front of them lay the grave of Peter Sr.. His grave was only now starting to grow some grass, which had yellowed in the autumn. The tombstone, labeled Peter Pellbrook Sr., along with the dates of his birth and death, stood solemnly like a saluting soldier. Peter Jr. watched the grave for a while.

“Sorry it took so long,” Peter continued, “I uh… I brought a friend. Her name’s Daisy.”

“Hello, sir,” Daisy said, laying a flower down on the paladin’s grave.

“She’s my girlfriend, Dad,” Peter said with a swallow, “I love her. And it’s like how you used to tell me it would be.”

Peter nodded gently, looking away for a second. “Things are going good. Doc works me hard, but he’s fair. And living with him is okay. He takes good care of me. And I take care of him, too, cause he’s crazy.”

Peter gripped onto Daisy’s shoulder with his right hand. Daisy looked up inquisitively. Peter’s jaw clenched. He knelt down and started wiping away the dust on the tombstone. He sighed bitterly, noting his lack of visible breath. He sniffled again.

“Ugh, being a vampire’s so weird, Dad,” Peter said, laying his own flower on the grave. “Anyway, I’ll visit more often. And don’t worry about me. I’ve got it pretty good now.”

There was a brief silence as Peter scowled. He swallowed and cleared his throat.

“Miss you, Dad,” Peter finally said, “Hope the Light or whatever is nice.”

Peter felt tears well in his eyes. He sniffled them away and took a deep breath, then he looked at Daisy. “Gosh, it’s itchy here.”

“Doc said that you might get an allergic reaction to the holy energy of a paladin’s grave,” Daisy noted.

“Yeah. Let’s get out of here.”

Daisy nodded. They turned around. The flowers they laid on the grave glowed gently with heavenly moonlight.

Garrick cackled loudly as he threw another fireball. It exploded a few meters away from him, filling everyone’s face with orange light. The fire vanished as quickly as it appeared.

“I AM A GOD OF FIRE!” Garrick yelled, throwing yet another fireball.

“Yeah, this was not a good idea,” Aldrich mumbled, but he was too busy tickling his own fireball.

Daisy had, at Peter’s suggestion, produced a few Fire Flowers for the Pellbrook family to try out. She was currently shuffling through her duffel bag of Power-Ups.

“This one gives you ice powers, but since you already have them…” Daisy continued, “Hm. This one gives you turtle armor and then lets you throw a bunch of hammers.”

“We can already throw a bunch of hammers, as long as we have hammers,” Blythe noted.

“Right, but this lets you make the hammers. Watch.”

Daisy pulled out a small packed suit of armor from the bag. She pressed it against her chest, causing her to change form. A small xylophonic melody played from somewhere. In a flash, she had a sleek black turtle shell on her back, and a helmet to match. She flexed her arms, and two small black hammers appeared in her hands.

“And then you can dooo… this.”

She pointed at one of the hay targets that the Pellbrooks set up for Daisy’s demonstration. A flurry of hammers launched out of Daisy’s hand, shredding one of the targets like a shotgun blast.

“Yeah, this one’s hard to make, but it’s reusable!” Daisy said, pulling at her chest. With another jingle, the armor peeled off, shrinking again into its miniature form.

“Whoa,” Oswin said, watching the shredded target from afar.

“Good idea having Daisy bring her Power-Ups,” Doc said to Peter.

Peter shrugged. “Figured Mama would appreciate it.”

And appreciate it she obviously did. She was currently donned with a yellow cape that came from touching an orange feather, and was launching herself around the sky with a mad cackle. Watching her like this, it was easy to see where Garrick had gotten his reckless side.

Ariel landed hard on the ground, sending a ripple of torn grass flying away. She hobbled slightly as she got used to the landing, then grinned wide at Daisy. Daisy grinned back.

“So yeah! This whole duffel bag is yours, for your… three gold.”

While Daisy insisted that she supply them for free, but Ariel insisted harder that she was no charity case and gave Daisy several gold pieces for them. Three gold was not nearly enough to cover for this - but it was likely a sizable portion of Ariel’s savings. Daisy felt bad for even taking this.

“Is that not enough?” Ariel said, already reaching for her weathered purse.

“No, no!” Daisy said, “Three gold is enough. Enjoy.”

Dr. McNinja started the car, causing it to rumble. The Pellbrook kids watched it with awe, even though they’d already seen it before.

“So lucky, his car just starts right away,” Oswin grumbled.

“We can buy you a new tractor,” Peter offered.

“No,” Ariel and Dr. McNinja simultaneously said.

Peter glared at Doc, who shrugged. “Listen, I’m just a physician. I can’t afford a new tractor even if I wanted to.”

Ariel sighed. “Alright. Well, you best be on your way. You uh… be good, you hear?”

Peter swallowed hard. “Mm. Be healthy, Mama.”

“You too.”

And that was it. The two didn’t even hug, instead volunteering to both turn and walk away towards their respective places. Peter entered the backseat wordlessly as Ariel peeled off her yellow cape, causing it to turn back into an orange feather.

Daisy watched the whole thing with almost horror, before Dr. McNinja pulled her aside.

“Hey Daisy,” Doc mumbled, “Peter might need you to hold his hand or something. That was really emotional of them.”

“What?” Daisy hissed.

“If Ariel’s anything like my mom, that was equivalent to an openly weeping goodbye. Go be with Peter.”

Daisy was about to question further, but noticed the Pellbrook children watch their mother with concern. Ariel waved her hand, grumbling something about incomplete chores, and the children sighed in relief.

Dr. McNinja gestured again at the car. Daisy took a moment, then entered.

“Hey, Pete,” Daisy said, watching his expression earnestly, “You okay?”

Peter’s face was grim, almost frowning. “Mm.”

“You wanna talk about it?”

Peter swallowed hard. He turned to Daisy, tears in his eyes. But even as a tear started rolling down his cheek, the boy grinned. “That was nice.”

Daisy smiled. “Yeah, it was, wasn’t it?”

Peter sighed. “Glad I did that.”

“Yeah.”

Peter leaned on Daisy’s shoulder. There was a pregnant moment where he searched for the right words to say. Peter blinked, his mouth gently open. Daisy watched him with almost fascination, knowing without words what Peter was feeling but wanting to hear it all the more. It was the gentle soothing of a little boy, a little boy who was wounded but too tired to cry for help. And what did he want to say?

“Thank you.”

Daisy smiled. “Any time, Pete.”

Dr. McNinja entered the car then. “Ready to head back, folks?”

“Oh yeah,” Pete said.

Peter leaned out the window, waving to his family. His family waved back, grinning widely.

Ariel met Peter’s eyes.

They waved at each other for a bit longer.

Doc’s car peeled away onto the dirt road, and they headed back for their clinic in the Hinterlands.
