New Character Name: Edward Elric

Is this character an OC or a Canon character? Canon Character

Starting Location? Cevanti

Character Behavior
Edward Elric is a Precocious Tactician.

He is Precocious in the way that he developed early, and developed fast. He has an innate talent for alchemy and for researching in general; one of his defining characteristics is his constant thirst for knowledge that propels him forward. It is the thing that drives him towards excellence, but it is also the very thing that orchestrated his largest mistakes.

In battle Edward is a Tactician. He lacks the fine tuned combat experience of other alchemists, but makes up for what he lacks in experience by evaluating the battlefield through a lens of tactics. When he draws a battle out long enough to formulate then execute a strategy, that is when Ed shines.

Physical Description:

Ed is, to his chagrin, a puny little pipsqueak. Whenever he stands side by side with another alchemist, he’s by far the smaller one. He is, in fact, only four feet and ten inches in height.

He’s lean and athletic, however. His body is toned from his acrobatic feats and unfortunately frequent combat incidents. Coupled with his automail, they make him a wily little scrapper.

He has long gold hair that he pulls back into a ponytail, and eyes that are nearly the same golden tone.

Edward wears a simple black uniform beneath a long red cloak; he prefers to wear black because the color obscures the oil stains from his automail.

Character History:

The slums of Markov are an unforgiving place. Living conditions range from barely acceptable to outright abysmal. Some families manage better than others, but access to basic amenities or healthcare is not taken for granted.

Edward and Alphonse grew up in the slums with their mother. Clever boys full of excitement and joy; the Elric brothers spent their days pursuing the things that boys pursue. They loved knowledge, adventure, and their mother. Their mother loved them, too, and held love in her heart for their father as well, absent though he was, having left long ago to travel.

The boys’ mother fell ill, and over time, her health began to wane.

One day, she died. The grief was unbearable, and in an act of impulsive decision making that would haunt Edward forever, the boy decided to perform an unspeakable taboo: human transmutation.

The law of equivalent exchange dictates that humankind cannot gain without first giving something in return. In order to obtain, something of equal value must be given.

Edward performed human transmutation. He gave his arm, his leg, and his brother Alphonse’s entire body. He obtained a writhing shape, vaguely humanoid, that appeared in the center of his transmutation circle, reached for him, then died. In another fit of impulse, Edward managed to inscribe another transmutation circle onto a vacant set of armor, and bound the soul of his brother Alphonse to the armor before it was lost to him.

In the wake of this tragedy the brothers dedicated their lives to the pursuit of alchemy. Edward Elric had automail prosthetics installed onto his person. Ed’s right arm and left leg are advanced automail constructs that have re-enabled him to interact with the world as others do. Now he dedicates himself entirely to the pursuits of alchemy as a science, gifted with the unique talent to transmute without the use of a transmutation circle due to his brush with the Truth, an entity from beyond the veil.

Abilities/Skills:

Abilities:
Alchemy

Variable Creation 5 (1000)
--Ongoing (500) <-since the objects don't poof out of existence
--Ranged (250) <- he can make stuff far away
--Indirect (500)<- he can make stuff that's pretty separate from where he is at any given moment, it's more about knowing what he's doing than "reaching the spot" so to speak
--Limited (Must use existing materials to create) (-250) <-That's why it's not just magic

Damage 3 (300) <- I lowered this ranking just because the spears and block punches rarely seem to be finisher type moves, but that's arbitrary
--Ranged (150) <-Spikes far away
--Indirect (300)<-Spikes against someone on the other side of a wall would be easy
--Limited (same as above) (-150)

Protection 4 (400) <-again a lowered ranking, just because alchemy stuff gets broken through alot
--Ranged (200)<- walls far away
--Indirect (400)<-Walls where he can't really reach is still valid alchemy
--Limited (-200)

--Move Object 5 (500) <-Launching stuff around with alchemy is pretty classic, and he moves some pretty big stuff with it.
--Flight 2 (200) <- items can be propelled when launched at a speed of 30 mph
--Ranged (250)<- walls far away
--Indirect (500)<-Walls where he can't really reach is still valid alchemy
--Limited (-250)

--Debuff (Restrain/Slow) 5 (500) <-The other big thing Alchemy gets used for a lot. Having the floor grab your enemy doesn't get old!
--Ongoing (500) <-since the objects don't poof out of existence
--Ranged (250)<- walls far away
--Indirect (500)<-Walls where he can't really reach is still valid alchemy
--Limited (-250)
--(Same modifiers as above, might need ongoing since it can keep holding you until you break free, might not, I'm unsure)

Edward is a practicing alchemist; it is the study he’s devoted his life to pursuing, and it is integrated deeply into his combat style. The practice of alchemy allows Ed to manipulate the molecular composition of his surroundings to change an object from an existing material. He can shift earth, metal, walls, and much more from their existing form into a new style of object.

Having tried to perform human transmutation, Ed found himself hurtled through a portal into another realm where he came face to face with an entity known as the Truth. When he returned from this journey, it literally cost him an arm and a leg. On the other hand, it also granted him the rare ability to utilize alchemy without the use of a transmutation circle. Instead of the inscriptions traditional alchemists need to produce in order to tap into their science, he can clap his hands together to perform alchemy.

In practical use, what this means is that all materials around Edward are his to manipulate at the clap of his hands. He can transmute the earth into rising platforms, towering walls of varying length up to but not beyond the length and width of sixteen cubic feet, or any conceptual manifestation therein; grasping hands, a thrusting fist of earth, or a pillar of metal that erupts from a nearby wall are not beyond him as long as he can see the placement of his transmutation or has object permanence that allows him to visualize the spot he’s transmuting. Because of this, he can create a wall of earth, but he can also indirectly create a pillar of earth beyond it as long as it is within the bounds of his alchemical talents and does need exceed his cubic limits.

When on the offensive, Ed can create thrusting spikes that range out towards his opponents which might erupt from the ground, a building, or even his own automail arm. These damaging attacks may take various forms, and can last as long as he allows them with regards to his total cubic manipulation. Additionally, he often transforms his right arm into a lengthened sword, or might pull a polearm right out of a nearby wall in order to combat his opponents. This ability can be direct: he might blast an opponent sideways with a pillar from the ground. It can also be indirect: if he’s put up a ten foot wall in front of him for protection, and is vaguely aware of his opponents whereabouts, he might thrust a spike upwards from beneath them with the clap of his hands. Unlike other alchemists this does not require the lengthy concentration they might employ when carving out an alchemical symbol. The limits of this ability are the materials at hand. He can only transmute objects into other forms. He cannot create material from nothing. Creating a sword from his automail arm, for instance, thins the existing metal but lengthens it into a point. Pulling from a nearby building, to boot, could cause a tremendous gap in a wall to appear. Some of these items aren’t the sort of hardened, honed steel or weaponry others may utilize, and as such, aren’t as damaging.

Edward also uses his alchemy defensively. As mentioned a wall between himself and an opponent is a common use, or a sudden shift of his right arm into a shield. The limitation on this is the material, and the need to clap his hands. If a fist is hurtling towards Ed and he can’t slap his hands together then he would be unable to prevent its collision. While this serves as quick and adequate protection, it is breakable. The thinned metal of a shield on Ed’s automail arm can be shattered with enough force; it does not keep him constantly protected. Ed does not need to see the ground or a wall to produce a wall, however. If he knows the material is there, he can manipulate it indirectly with the clap of his hands. Things that break through his protection are still threats to his bodily health.

One use of alchemy is fairly universal. Launching things! One of the best things about thrusting a pillar of flattened ground into the air beneath something is that it’ll create some airtime. Ed uses this as a strategy to put some distance between his opponents. Sometimes that looks like punching up with a pillar that catapults someone away. Sometimes that looks like punching up with a pillar that catapults Edward away. This doesn’t cause more damage than a traditional weapon, but it is useful as a strategic way of manipulating the battlefield.

Another practical use of alchemy lends itself well to the trade. Oftentimes an alchemist needs to apprehend or restrain a target. If Ed can slam an opponent against a wall, he could also transmute that wall into a grasping hand, or interlacing restraints that bind that opponent against that wall. Similarly he might attempt to transmute the ground into a snare trap that snags at his opponent’s feet where they stand. Restraint is a common tool against a particularly troublesome foe, and it is also a common way of restraining a malefactor.

Acrobat
Agility 3 (600)
Endurance 2 (200)

Edward prefers to flip, jump, handspring, and bounce around the battlefield, and he’s good at it. His agility is the key to his method of physical combat, and it allows him to maneuver around like a gymnast.

While this is all very taxing, Ed has built up a level of endurance and stamina that allows him to continue to move this way in battle and even power through some wounds and damage; it is finite, however, and he does wear down through cumulative exhaustion and combat fatigue.

Master Skills:

Skill Group: Alchemist 4 (200)

Researcher: Edward is a practiced researcher; in fact, he spends so much time hitting the books that it is his first resort when it comes to problem solving. He loves investigating and solving puzzles so much so that he can lose himself into an obsessive pursuit of knowledge, blocking out the world around him.

Acrobat: Part of being an alchemist is keeping the body in shape and using it as a tool to further the pursuit of the art. Edward has an innate talent and studied knowledge of acrobats that aid him in moving about and implementing his alchemy.

Alchemy: Foundational to the pursuit of alchemy is a knowledge of its foundations, rhetoric, and practical application. Ed is well versed in alchemical symbology, theory, and history.

Battlefield Tactics: An alchemist needs to know how to ply their trade in combat, especially since so many of them end up in the role of soldier. Ed’s an aficionado of alchemy’s use in combat and can put together elaborate schemes and strategies on the fly using his innate talent and his obtained knowledge. He’s well versed in the ways famous alchemists both present and past implement their science in combat.

Rhetoric: One thing that doesn’t come naturally to Ed, but which he has studied at length is rhetoric. Rhetoric is the art of speaking or writing persuasively. While Edward is not naturally gifted in this pursuit as he is in others, he has learned how to ply his charisma in unique and sincere ways when he needs to.

Affinities: Gifted

Hey there Spot; Ed here looks pretty great overall, however I do need to pick one particular nit here:

Using your abilities to 'super-jump' yourself in a controlled manner does fall under the purview of non-ongoing Flight effects, not just Move Object, so you'll need to slap a few ranks of Flight in here somewhere for that usage to be valid.

Thanks!

Edited! Added two ranks of flight and in order to afford it I reduced variable creation to rank 5 and it's according effects. Also changed the thirty two cubic feet descriptor about his alchemical creations to sixteen cubic feet accordingly.

Alright, that looks better.

Your Essence total only seems to come out to 7,100, however, so feel free to adjust that and post your profile in the usual place.
