The class bell inside Cytokine College Four rang as Imogen hurried her way through the hall carrying various books and folders full of papers, her laptop bag slung over her shoulder. The blonde carefully opened the door to her class and slipped inside. She was only minutes late, but the class was full, and the students were talking amongst themselves.

“Sorry I’m late, class. Late night.” Explained the twenty-six-year-old doctoral candidate.

She was just a few years older than her students, having been a child prodigy. She had been selected by the Jedi Temple on Erde Nona from an early age to undergo rigorous training as a youngling and padawan. She excelled in every aspect, including dueling. She’d never admit it and hates to resort to using her lightsaber, but Imogen was a gifted duelist. She achieved the rank of Jedi Knight at twenty-two and chose to enroll in an Arcadian college. Upon obtaining her master’s she left Erde Nona and went to Cevanti to serve under the Guild’s Jedi Order and continue her education at one of the many Cytokine Colleges littered throughout the city. She had chosen her doctoral field to be biomechanical engineering.

“The girls take you out again, Miss Corren?” One of her female students asked.

“Yes. Third time this week.”

“They just tryin to get you some, Miss Corren.” One of the guys said.

Some of the students laughed.

“Be that as it may, let’s get started, shall we? Today we’re talking about Luciferium. Open your books to page four-fifty-three.”

The students did as they were asked, readying their notebooks.

“Last week we talked about the interface of machine and flesh in most modern prosthetic limbs. We know that any part of the body can be replaced or rebuilt with biomechanical parts. Where Luciferium comes into the picture is how the body reacts to its replacement part or parts. Due to the nature of the implants, a dose of Luciferium is required to maintain cellular cohesion between machine and flesh. Each pill is filled with a dose of mechanites. One must take a pill of this red substance every six days or risk serious bodily harm and even possible malfunction of your prosthetics or implants.”

A student raised her hand.

“Yes. Brittney.”

“Is the drug addictive or can you stop taking them if you have your biomachine parts removed?”

“There’s the downside. Once the mechanites are in you they’re in you. There is no way to get them out.” Imogen replied.

“Moving on, the Luciferium has the added benefit of repairing cellular damage, increasing various aspects of your health, and even curing brain damage. However, you become dependent on it. Without a dose after six or seven days you begin to experience psychosis, intense pain, and mental breaks.”

“Why would someone subject themselves to such an addiction? What if C industries ever ran out?” Asked another student.

“If you lost both of your legs, would you not do anything to regain the ability to walk again? What about your arms? Or even your entire body if you suffer trauma to your neck?” Imogen reasoned.

The blonde Jedi woke from her dreams and sat up breathing heavily covered in sweat. She had had another nightmare about the Siege of Markov and how she had been assigned by the Order to Roy Mustang as a Jedi General to help lead troops and defend the city. She had admired the man. Her girly friends liked to tease that she had crush on him, but she knew better. Swinging her legs over the side of the bed, she got up and headed to the kitchen of her one-bedroom apartment. She wore a giant oversized T-shirt that went down to her legs. Switching on the light over the sink Imogen took her kettle and filled it with water from the faucet. Placing it on the stove she switched on the burner to medium heat. Taking a single tea bag from the cupboard and a mug from the cabinet, Imogen readied her cup. With a quiet mew her cat Liara jumped onto the counter looking for attention. The blonde gave her scratchies on her head before moving to the end of her countertop. She lifted the plastic wrap on a plate of cookies she had baked for her students and removed one. They had come out delicious.

With her tea done the Jedi Knight opened the sliding door to her balcony. A cold front had moved in and brought rain to the section of the city in which she resided. Imogen listened to the rain patter against the rooftops as she sat drinking her tea at the patio table she had bought for her balcony.

Imogen only had to teach class one day a week. The rest of her time was spent performing various duties for the Jedi Council here on Cevanti. Today, however, was her day off. The first thing she did was bring two plates of cookies to the staff room at her college. Next, she went to the bank and paid her rent and cellular bill. Hopping back into her tiny little car, Imogen drove to the Jedi Temple and parked along the street. Grabbing her lightsaber off the passenger seat she got out and headed inside with another plate of cookies. Imogen made her way to the barracks to drop off her baked desserts before heading into the library to get caught up on some reading.
