Overview/Notable Features (top)
From the orbit of Opealon, the entire planet looks eerily Earth-like. However, as you enter the planet’s atmosphere you can see clearly that the lush green trees and plentiful lakes are attached to islands that are floating of the planet’s surface, giving only the illusion of traditional continents.
Wildlife has adapted to this type of terrain and most of the animals that live in this habitat tend to be lightweight, flying creatures. The islands, since time immemorial, have always floated through some somewhat mysterious means. In recent generations, civilizations have managed to weave intricate machines that enhance the altitude of these floating landmarks. These developments have allowed for an even more dramatic divide between the World's two principle cultures.
The people that live on these platforms tend to be extremely wealthy as the natural fruits and wildlife are delicacies among other planets. These ‘islanders’ or 'Skylanders' see themselves as the rightful heirs to Opealon and will look down on any of the other natives or even tourists. They tend to be religiously fanatic about their technology and view anyone who relies on magic or distances themselves from technology to be a lesser being. They will persecute anyone that judges their lifestyle.
Below these beautiful islands is nothing but a large ocean. These waters are quite perilous due to the rough waters, predatory sea monsters, and the threat of pirates. The wildlife in the ocean fits the phrase “Eat or be eaten” as nearly all of the creatures prey on other wildlife. The people down here, often labeled 'seafarers' by themselves and others, are descendants of outcasts from the islands above and tend to live in extreme squalor. Since there is no land, the people live in boat communities or moving, wooden harbors. Their main source of income is exporting the enormous amounts of water as well as other types of seafood. Due to this poverty, pirates are common and many ships fall prey to the sea’s cold clutches. People often use magic to aid them in their trails due to the expensive nature of ‘islander’ technology.'
The presence of the occasional thermal vent or underwater caverns seems to point toward even more unknowns about the world's history, as well as its ecosystem. Rumor has it that there is a civilization that has somehow thrived, beneath the treacherous deeps.
Terrain/Climate (top)
Opealon is a tropical world with lush forests on each of the islands and mossy vines dangling down into the oceans. Thick forests cover almost every island until civilization clears them away in the creation of their own oasis. Once inhabited, the undersides of these islands are often adorned with giant machines to hoist them further away from the ocean below: Windmills, solar panels, and giant propellers are a common site on 'advanced' islands. The oceans down below have various environments, ranging from a more calm and 'shallow' oceans that may be dotted with coral reefs to seemingly endless deep oceans that bear the tumultuous roar of constant waves. It is always humid in Opealon so the large ocean is usually appreciated. While the islands that adorn the planet's skies often have some degree of control over the nearby climate thanks to technological savvy, the ocean below is rarely slave to anyone's will, regardless of their technology or foul magics. Rogue waves and vast hurricanes can form from seemingly blue skies, threatening even the most hardened of seafarers. Occasionally, underwater earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can have calamitous (albeit very very) effects on everyone's livelihood. If you intend to live the seafarers life, you should be prepared for every disastrous inevitability while on this endless sea.
Wildlife (top)
Opealon's floating islands, when not occupied by the lavish cities, have thick forests that are largely unoccupied by larger beasts. The occupants on the islands have systematically gotten rid of the more dangerous beasts, leaving more agile pests and insects to remain free. This means that only the most cultivated, aesthetically pleasing and useful species remain. This includes exotic birds, monkeys, sloths, and domesticated species that live in a carefully monitored balance. In stark contrast, the ocean below is teeming with untamed and free-roaming sea life. In the more shallow regions of the ocean, plants thrive on the surface of the water. The kelp forests are full of shoal fish, octopi, reef sharks, and eels that usually aren't dangerous unless provoked. The deeper parts of the ocean are more dangerous, however, with many large sea life threats that attack anything that appears on the surface. These include megalodons, reaper leviathans, and even the dreaded kraken.
