New Character Name: Koa

Is this character an OC or a Canon character? Original Character

Starting Location? Erde Nona

Character Behavior
Koa is a kind-hearted merchant. She’s honest, straightforward and maybe a bit reserved at times, but ultimately a friendly person. If you invited her to a barbecue she’d be the one bringing a case of beer and some vegetarian options.

Koa is also a merchant: her strengths are not on the battlefield wielding a sword and a shield, but behind the counter wielding a quill and an abacus, working out a deal that works for both sides and leaving customers and patrons feeling like they’re treated fair. She will attempt to negotiate and defuse a dangerous situation with honeyed words and perhaps a little coin rather than with cold steel, though if the situation is well and truly hopeless she’ll usually turn tail and run, or get out of the way of more capable fighters, offering what little support she can from the backline.

Physical Description:

Koa's a fishwoman native to Opealon's seas - a mandarin dragonet fish to be precise. Having been born and raised at depths where the immense water pressure would crush and flatten most surface lifeforms into pancakes, she sports a muscular and athletic build. As is the case for all fishmen she is amphibious and capable of breathing both in water through gills and air through lungs.

Character History:

Koa was born in Opealon, specifically in a small town called Scylla's Rest around seven kilometers below the surface of the ocean planet, to a fishwoman mother and a merman father. Due to the town's small nature and everyone needing to wear many hats to make ends meet for themselves and the community as a whole, she and her younger mermaid sister Namari learned harpoon hunting, seaweed farming, clam-harvesting, squid herding and many other professions. Most importantly though, as all young fishmen do, she learned the merchant craft.

It should be noted that fishmen believe that unique deities called ‘kami’ reside in all things, and collect and hoard rare items that they believe to house powerful kami. These items would bring power and prosperity to the owner and their kin. As a rule of thumb, the older and the rarer an object is, the more powerful the kami in it is. The best way to acquire and collect these rare items is through trade with the outside world. As such, fishmen learn the arts of calculating, haggling, bargaining, working out deals and drafting contracts to enable them to one day build their own prosperous collection. And Koa was no exception.

The beautiful dream was not to last, however.

On her 24th birthday, Koa was going to rise to the surface with several items she had found or made that would be valuable to a surface-dweller. And as they do, on the party the evening before she indulged a little too much on the alcohol due to her nervous anticipation and, when she went to pray to the family heirloom, a jade statuette from the surface depicting an elephant that was passed down through generations, a misstep in her drunken state and her flailing arms as she tried to catch herself knocked the statuette down from its pedestal and broke it.

The shock and realization of what had happened sobered the young fishwoman right up. But she could not face her parents for this, so when Namari came in to check what the crash sound was about Koa confessed everything to her and told her to give the following message to her parents: that she would go to the surface as planned, but that she would not return to Scylla's Rest until she had earned enough Coin to buy a replacement for the heirloom she had broken, even if it took her years. Tearful goodbyes and hugs were exchanged between the sisters, then she rose to the surface with her meager belongings, somehow managed to get onto an island and sought out the most prospective market she could find.

To make a long backstory short she decided to try her luck in Erde Nona, managed to scrape together enough money to buy herself a trip to Arcadia, and departed her homeworld. But that is where the story really begins.

Waddoya expect? She’s a fish-woman!
Koa can breathe underwater and outside of it thanks to her lungs and gills. ‘Switching’ respiratory systems takes some ten seconds.
Koa can also share her air with others, usually by way of mouth-to-mouth breathing. In a pinch, she could sustain up to three people by rapidly cycling between them, but they must remain close to each other for that to work. And let’s not talk about the awkward aftermath...

Master Skills & Perks:

Social (Merchant) Rank 4: Koa is a fairly skilled merchant. While not all that experienced (yet), she has learned and practiced the craft a lot in her hometown and knows how to drive a hard bargain without disgruntling her customer or business partner. And as she builds a network of business contacts that like her, she's often given a better deal for her purchases than the average Multerran.
Perk: Consumables Discount (Rank 4 - 1200)

Driving/Piloting (Carriages) Rank 2: Koa is decently skilled at handling carriages and wagons of the type pulled by animals. She’s most comfortable with driving caravans and carriages bearing trade goods. Transporting them herself instead of paying good money for them to be delivered to the craftsman that'll use them or the location they're used at, allows her to decrease her spendings when it comes to getting a structure built or her beloved carriage improved.
Perk: Bases/Upgrades Discount (Rank 2 - 600)

Craft (Brewing & Wining) Rank 1: No, not whining! Wining as in operating a winery, the equipment to produce wine. With the fermentation processes to brewing beer and making wine being fairly similar, Koa is somewhat familiar at performing both, and typically has a barrel or two of booze in the back of her carriage, fermenting away.

Craft (Cooking) Rank 1: Koa's got the basics down and can usually put together something edible out of whatever's at hand. It's not five-star gourmet opealonian cuisine, but with the right ingredients she can make something savory and nutritious.

Survival (Foraging) Rank 1: Though she prefers to check with a guidebook, Koa is able to forage all sorts of food in the wilds and distinguish what is and isn’t edible.
Combining this with her brewing and cooking skills, she can keep herself from going hungry or thirsty in the wild, saving on food and drink expenses and reducing her reliance on packed rations.
Perk: World Quest Bonus (Rank 3 - 900)

(Yes hi, me again, I had a big dumb-dumb and forgot that I meant to put up a wholely different backstory. Please ignore the above Character History and refer to this one instead.
Also means that a few smaller things like the description of how she got her Master Skills aren't entirely accurate. I'm reflecting all changes in the below post. Very sorry to whoever has to sift through this because I was impatient!)

Character History:
Koa wasn't always a Multerran. She wasn't even a... what she's now. An anthropomorphic fish? A fishperson? Not a merfolk because those have a tail instead of legs? And her name wasn't even Koa. How is it then that she wound up in this place? Let's turn the clock back a few years.

She was born in a modern world, the older of two children of a perfectly normal and happy family somewhere in Europe. Falling squarely into the 'millenial' generation she grew up with computers and smartphones, did a few summer camps with the scouts before dropping back out, went through the same little 'rebel' phase every teenager undergoes as they pass puberty, got bullied for being nerdy, picked up martial arts and twisted the bullies's arms until they left her alone, got into the swimming and D&D clubs, made friends with likeminded people, stuffed her nose into anime, books and videogames, got herself a job as a salesperson and dreamt of one day becoming a pro esports caster and a crazy cat lady.

As with all things it came to a sudden and abrupt end when she was 24. Her job had required her to visit Japan for a few weeks as a representative with a prospective business partner. Seeing the opportunity to visit a country she had always dreamt of, she spent some of her savings to buy her little sister a plane ticket, and got her to come along. It was great, her employer was very happy, the business partners were too, and they'd gotten to see Japan in their off time. Who woulda thunk that it was going to end as it did.

They took a cruise ship back home, but never arrived. A pair of japanese serial killers who'd been looking to flee the country had snuck on board, and when a passenger recognized them and called the police, one of them panicked, took a hostage and ordered for the ship to be diverted while holding them at knifepoint. The thing was, the hostage was Koa's sister.

And stupidly, Koa decided to be a hero. Or maybe she just saw red as her little sister cried in terror with the knife to her throat, she doesn't quite remember.

Using the learned self-defense skills on how to disarm a knife attacker, she went in. And though she pulled a textbook disarm-and-incapacitate sequence off, it ultimately didn't save her. The two killers were partners in crime after all, and the second one who had just caught up to his friend fired his gun in the air as a warning shot. In the ensuing panic on board, Koa remembers only blurs, a sharp pain, screaming, cold and darkness. Maybe she'd saved her sister, but it'd costed her her own life. Her last thought was her wish that her sister would be safe.

Then she woke up incorporeal, like a ghost, in a place that could only be described as surreal or dreamlike. A dozen or so rocks formed platforms linked by tree branches and rickety bridges, and on them stood all manner of odd things: crystal formations taller than a man jutting out of the ground, mushrooms the size of umbrellas, strange stone ruins and structures, statues of people she could not recognize, trees, beehives, a garden-shed-sized hut, a bar counter just in the middle of nothing... all underneath a blue and purple starry sky, like a Mac desktop background.

And when she saw a curious statuette in one of the ponds on the rock she had landed on and reached out to grab it, she slipped and fell in, only wake up in what she would later know was Erde Nona. Sure, she could've met with a worse fate. But she also could've met with a lot better fate than finding out that whatever that realm between worlds was, touching the figurine and falling into the pond had not only tossed her into a new life, but turned her into a fish-person thing. And she was surrounded by men with nets who happily informed her what a rare prize a fishwoman was.

Yeah, she could definitely have gotten luckier than that.

Master Skills & Perks
(No changes to what I spent essence on, just the descriptions!)
Social (Merchant) Rank 4: Koa is a fairly skilled merchant owing to her saleswoman background, before she came to Multerra. While not all that experienced at directly bartering, haggling and the like, her prior experience means that she knows how to sell something and drive a hard bargain without disgruntling her customer or business partner. After a good sale, both sides should come out feeling like they've made a fair deal.
Perk: Consumables Discount (Rank 4 - 1200)

Driving/Piloting (Carriages) Rank 2: Like many girls, Koa had her horse-loving phase as a kid and took a few horseback riding courses. These don't translate too well into handling a carriage, a wagon and the like, but she can put some of the knowledge to use on the animals.

It came up in a school project, alright. With the fermentation processes to brewing beer and making wine being fairly similar, Koa is somewhat familiar at performing both.

Craft (Cooking) Rank 1: Koa's got the basics down and can usually put together something edible out of whatever's at hand. It's not five-gold-stars gourmet cuisine, but with the right ingredients she can make something savory and nutritious.

Survival (Foraging) Rank 1: Though she prefers to check with a guidebook, Koa is able to forage all sorts of food in the wilds and distinguish what is and isn’t edible. Thanks dad, for signing her up to those scout summer camps! Those outdoors skills came in useful after all.
Combining this with her brewing and cooking skills, she can keep herself from going hungry or thirsty in the wild, saving on food and drink expenses and reducing her reliance on packed rations.
Perk: World Quest Bonus (Rank 3 - 900)

You don't appear to have attached an Essence cost to these, but they cost 50E each. This increases your Total Spent Essence to 2,950E.

That being said, you're approved. Post your new character profile, I'll be updating everything else!

I was looking to combine the three skills Brewing & Wining, Cooking and Survival with one rank each, into the Rank 3 World Quest Bonus actually. Should maybe have clarified that?

Either way, many thanks for getting to it so fast ^_^
