Basically, horizontal rules are these things:

It doesn't have to be super-duper fancy like the ones below; something like the first 2 works fine. Again, they'd make neat section breaks for posts, articles, and other stuff, so it would be cool to have them implemented as a formatting option.

Oh and as a reminder. If you have a complaint, being blunt about it is extremely abrasive. At least offer a constructive way to improve the problem. Don't just state "This is bad so I'm complaining about it." That's just churlish.

My complaint about Ability Approval being too slow stands. The ways to fix it include setting a period of time during the day for Staff to look at such, or appointing additional staff to have the sole duty of approving abilities. These are the ways I've thought of, anyway.

Sir, it has been less than a week since you applied for your Ability. 5 days, specifically. I understand that, in our modern society, we expect instant gratification in everything we do, but please have patience. The Staff of Multerra are entirely volunteer and unpaid. Your donations completely go towards server costs, maintaining our URL, and paying programmers for more features like the Weekly Coin modification. Every member of Staff has offline obligations and responsibilities. Full time jobs. Loved ones. And, even, writing. And until such time as the memberbase gives enough to Patreon to allow one or more of us to quit our jobs and work here full-time (I'd need about 3 grand a month, myself) these are the things we need to juggle.

Have patience. We're focusing what little time we have on getting members in the door and fielding the practically non-stop slew of questions and concerns, aside from ensuring our public spaces remain friendly to all. We will get to Abilities and Coin Purchases. Don't worry. Just... please don't base your roleplaying decisions on an Ability your apped less than a week ago. Be proactive! App them bad-boys weeks in advance! You'll be happier for it.

I think you misunderstood. You can choose which one to use, in this context, means you can use the shield or your armor, whichever is narratively appropriate.
Or, in other words, if you're wearing armor and block with a shield, you don't stack the Protection.
Okay, yeah, that makes way more sense.

This didn't occur to me until just now, but although they don't technically stack, having both a shield and armour should actually protect you more than just having one of them.

Let's say you have a Protection 3 shield with Protection 2 armour. If someone hits your shield with a Damage 4+ attack, they're going to pierce through it... but then your armour should soften the blow when that happens, realistically.

So rather than making things stack fully, or not stack at all, I think we should go with the suggestion I made originally about considering each separate instance separately. Not only does it make for easier, simpler Ability writing, but it's also the most realistic and narratively appropriate method...
Though for balance reasons the combined ranks should not be able to exceed the higher level cap of either the character being buffed or the character doing the buffing, as I mentioned before.

Due to the way scaling works, having five individual Effects with Protection 1 will always be less efficient than a single instance of Protection 5, of course, so it's not like this would provide any exploitable mechanics... it would, however, allow for more varied and interesting ways of building Abilities than we have now... and would allow us to scrap that horrible notion of having Modifiers with different ranks from the Effects they're tied to, which seems to be your current solution.

In the end, it's easier to explain and understand: "they don't stack in a mechanical sense, you take the higher applicable Effect". You dont have to work out weird math. You dont have to check your writing partner's (or your own) level to see what the new Rank is. You just take the highest Rank between all the Abilities affecting you. Simple.

Again, this is from the "mechanical" side of the house. In your example, you could write being better protected and no one is gonna get their panties in a twist. It just won't have a mechanical effect. A Damage 5 attack against your Protection 2 Armor and Protection 1 Shield is still gonna hurt. And since Damage isn't a thing, you have some wiggle room in how you present it narratively.

What isn't easier to explain or understand is that idea of having Modifiers that affect only certain ranks of an Effect. It's terrible and really needs to be scrapped. This suggestion would be an excellent way of replacing it with something less ridiculous.
